The darkness, surrounding, swirling, encompassing the cradle. The mind lingering where it deigns to remain and never straying far from its route between dream and unreality.
A golden road, under a cyan sky, meeting with a cyan road under a golden sky. An unshapely figure on each, wandering, slowly. The closer they come, the more can be made out in the muddled detail of the world of the unwaking, the paths untangling, shifting apart slightly so that they may pass without issue.
Closer they walk, unshaped to familiar, a reference to a shared delusion upon a world of fantasy, of phantasy, pairs of horns, a tail, wings. Closer still, until the reality of the underlying form forced its way to the surface in both of their minds eyes.
They met, spoke, and left on their journeys without incident, like they had millions of times, in millions of forms before. But the boy turned, eyes fluttering with a golden sheen as his cracked mind mended spontaneously, calling out towards his temporary partner.
It was a spark of instability, inflaming the two paths reaching out into the endless distance towards their dreams over the horizon. Prepared destinies crashing into one another, shattering the sky and illuminating a purple path into the unknown, crossing both in an intersection under an eldritch sky as the two of the now familiar shapes discuss a wordless conversation even as reality melts into obscurity around them.
In the morning, their bodies were never discovered.

[The Sister]
The bed was too soft, yet at the same time too hard. Familiar yet not, the kind of unease felt when waking up after the first night in an expensive hotel. She tossed and turned, half asleep mind only idly noticing the lack of morning sting in the eyes that came with severe insomnia and waking up too early after falling asleep at 3 in the morning. From her side, onto her back, she shuffled around, reorganizing the pillow under her head multiple times before opening her eyes after the effort only works to wake her up even more. Waking up more rested than she’s ever been in the last 4 or so years, only to be hit with a wave of confusion as she beheld a lightly torn autographed poster of Seto Kaiba pinned on the ceiling over her bed. An almost cartoonishly exaggerated lipstick kiss mark right on the forehead.
“...Ew.”
She squinted at the poster, still groggy, before coming to her senses and realizing that something was very, very wrong. Sitting up suddenly from the fluffy nest of stuffed plush toys, pillows, and a fluffy purple comforter that was definitely not on her bed when she went to sleep the night before. And she would know, she went to sleep at 2 in the morning, almost triple checking where she was sleeping because gods forbid she sleeps anywhere else.
“Waitaminute. Where the FUCK am I?!” She looked around frantically, taking in the foreign yet familiar room. It was relatively plain in terms of furniture - a small nightstand to the side holding a pair of phones (one a cellphone, the other an old purple flip phone), an odd leather case which looks suspiciously familiar, and an almost exaggerated-looking pair of headphones with large muffs and a frankly ridiculously long cord. A tall lamp in the corner lights up the shelves of unfamiliar figures on the walls, all the sentimental trinkets she was used to seeing missing entirely. There were posters on the walls, new ones she’d never seen before, related to Duel Monsters of all things. Not Yugioh, where the card game comes from, but the in-universe name, Duel Monsters. Same signature swirl portal design behind, but no markings of the title of the worldwide series Yugioh to be found.
The shape of the room itself was also strange, seeming to curve around a corner, light being visible from around the bend - yet another sign that this wasn’t her room, she can’t sleep with the lights on. Maybe she should’ve checked that out, but… yeah no there were more pressing issues at hand. Namely the fact that she still had NO IDEA where she was!
She glanced around the room again - nothing stopping her from leaving as far as she could tell, the door was right there, had a poster of a Blue-Eyes White Dragon on it and everything. But who knows what could have been waiting for her out there? For all she knew, there could be a bunch of armed and dangerous kidnappers or some shit trying to pull a Truman Show on her. (Though some small part of her already knew that wasn’t the case - it was all too similar to scenarios she’d written. Scenarios in which she was put into the world of a beloved franchise. But she couldn’t be sure, not yet.)

The cellphone on the bedside table caught her eye. It seemed to be hers, the same cat sticker and Homestuck charm she’d always had on the purple case. She picked it up, hands shaking as she navigated through to her contacts. Someone must be able to pick up, right?
She tried her mom first. It rang once before turning to static and hanging up. She tried again. The same. Her dad, same. Her sister, the same. She couldn’t reach any of them, no matter how many calls she made.
Now panicked, she tried everyone she could think of. Her partner, Nikki - static. Her closest friend, Luna - static. Her friends - Cross, Oliver, Aqui, Pluto, Siddha, Blu, no, no, no… all static after the first ring. Nobody could hear her. Nobody was coming to save her. She kept going, calling Jade, Ramses, Rai-
Brrrring…
She scarcely noticed the ringing coming from what must have been a couple rooms away over the sound of her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. It made it to the second ring. Then the third. Then, a click as the call actually connected.
“Urghh what do you want its like... ah fuck it's noon already?” The voice on the other end said first, familiar, known. If a little thinner than she remembered him being. The little found family thing they had going for the two of them being the only thing allowing her to notice how his words seemed a bit younger than he normally sounded.
Relief flooded her mind and body as she heard his voice through the speaker of her modern cellphone. Words trying to claw their way up her throat and plunge her back into the depths of panic, it was practically impossible to keep it out of her voice as she spoke next.
“Rai, what does your room look like? As in, right now, in this moment because I did NOT wake up in my room.” She managed to spit out with the minimal amount of panic needed to speak without too many stutters.
“Huh? Oh hey Kat, I forgot I put you on emergency bypass. Uhh… hold on a second…” There was a sound on the other end that sounded a lot like shuffling, then a small thump that for some reason she thought she could hear from nearby. “...Not this, room's wrong, I don't have this many posters for movies or bands, especially ones I had no idea existed."
“Ok cool so im not alone. Great cool wonderful fantastic great ok- oh gods fuck this im gonna die. Actually - did we die? We probably died!” She rambled, words getting more and more frantic the longer she spoke.
“Hey, hey, calm down, we’re still alive, probably. Something fucky happened but it's not like something supernatural happened, right?” Rai said, sounding increasingly unconvinced in his own words. (They both wrote the same sort of stories, after all. It wouldn’t be that far of a stretch to find themselves in the middle of one.)
“Well we appear to be in motherfucking YUGIOH if the posters on my walls are anything to go by so maybe! Fuckkkkk fuck fuck urghhh. Ok, um. Sorry.” She paused, sighing. “Hhhh, pull yourself together Kat…” She mumbled. Doing her best to keep herself from spiralling further as she drags her ass out of the bed she woke up in. Standing up in the brown shag carpeting of the unfamiliar room and walked over to the door she had noticed earlier. Jiggling the handle a bit, discovering that it wasn’t locked and simply opening it up to see another door directly across a mid-sized hallway. Wide enough to have both doors open at the same time, though not enough that someone could walk through if they were both open it seemed. “Uh, didn’t manage to call anyone else. I tried Aquivo, but they didn’t pick up, neither did anyone else I knew the numbers to…”
She looked down both ends of the hallway, inspecting both directions before flinching at the door opposite hers opening soon after she stepped out. The first thing she noticed from the young man stepping through the door is that he held a phone to the side of his head as well, the second thing was that- HEY WAIT A SHITTING SECFUCK-
“RAI!?” She yelled, the boy across the way flinching at the loud sound, doubled audio from his phone as well.
“Wh- Kat? Why is your hair zagging? Why are your eyes sparkling like that, why are your glasses comically large and by god did you sleep in that outfit??” He said, hanging up the phone with a single hand and glancing down to take in the entirety of Kat’s outfit.
“Wh-” She did a double take, glancing down at her own outfit in shock before realizing that his was just as bad. “Like you can talk! You look like a halfassed Sonic gjinka, or maybe Kaiba’s long lost cousin with that coat!” He flinched at the barbed words, hand going to his heart like he was stabbed as he did the anime thing of reacting like he was physically struck.
“That’s hurtful, why are your beanie ears pressed down like actual cat ears?” Rai replied after a bit of recovery, mouth opening to say something before said beanie caught his own sparkling gold eyes behind his own cartoonishly large glasses.
She reached up to check the beanie only to find that he was right, the ears were pinned back like a goddamn cat. “I- wait they are? Godsdamnit - well you look like you stole Hero from Omori’s bedhead and his babyface! You don’t look a day over 18!”
“Hey, I resemble that remark!” He joked, cracking a smile at the jab. “Next thing we know you’ll have the little tooth fang thing too like an anime character… Moving on.” Rai said, going to say something before something that Kat said before finally registered, looking down at himself and inspecting his outfit a bit. “Oh hey, we match.” He pointed out. Patting around inside of the coat that he had apparently spawned in with before pulling out a few items from multiple hidden pockets.
The two of them look down at what exactly he had pulled out. Multiple sets of lockpicks and picking tools, other small tools like a screwdriver and multiple multitools, as well as a small ziplock baggy with a sticky note labeled pure gold, emergency funding.
“...Well this is incriminating.” He noted after a small silence between them.
“No shit, it looks like you’ve been up to some minor-villain shenanigans, Kat snickered, patting her own jacket down to see if she had anything of note herself.
“A modicum of trolling? A tiddlywink of tomfoolery? Clearly something fucky is going on here though, is there like a Millennium Coin or something? I don’t remember much of Yugioh and we’re like, CLEARLY there…” He paused, grinning. “Ooh, like Chaos Effect…”
“You did not just unironically call it a fucking tiddlywink…” Kat grumbles as she pulls a few items from hidden pockets that really should not fit on the inside of a denim jacket but did, somehow. A miniature sewing kit, wallet, keys, a half-crushed granola bar, a sticker she doesn’t remember buying with the Dark Magician on it, and a bagged gold coin with the same note as Rai’s. She also made note of a couple extra pockets sized for her phone and something smaller she couldn’t place at the time.
“I did indeed, and I do say I killed it on the delivery. Anyways, Millennium coin yes or no? Probably not as you have one too.” He said, scratching at his face a bit and looking around in the hallway somewhat.
“Yeah, no. Only seven Millennium items and none of em’ are coins, or even remotely coin-shaped.”
“Millennium Ring.” Rai pointed out.
“That’s not fuckin’ coin shaped, it’s a ring around a triangle it’s not even one piece and it has fucking… Metal tassels? I don’t know what to call them. Looks more like a cursed dreamcatcher if anything.”
“Well there goes my chance to call the spirit of the ring the spirit of the hoola hoop… Uh, wait do you think we have IDs here?” He said, putting all his random lockpicking things back into their hidden pockets in his own jacket and patting his pants down. “Aw man, I hate jeans…” He said, pulling out his wallet and digging through its contents. Giftcards, Debit card, credit card that didn’t have his name on it, and a drivers license. Kat did the same, flipping through her own wallet until she found her license.
“Alright lets see, Katrina Daemon… Age 18, born 19XX October 24th… It actually just says 19XX, for some reason? Isn’t the date of Yugioh Classic known though?” She tried to remember, but it had been a hot minute since she’d last seen the show and it was the 4Kids dub anyway.
“Uh something something… 97?” He tried, eyes looking away in an effort to visibly probe his own memory about the little bit of trivia.
She snapped her fingers. “Spring of 1997, Duelist Kingdom starts. Thanks.”
“Uh… Your ID changed…” Rai pointed out, looking back down to her outstretched hand. Katrina Daemon, Born 1978 October 24. “Well at least I kept my own birthday… Uh.” He said, holding out his own ID. Rai Daemon, Born 1978, October 24.
“...Oh. Shit.” She blinked once, processing, before the realization struck them both. “Holy fuck we’re twins. Like, for realsies.”
“...Dibs on being the older twin, by 4 seconds.”
“Wh-” That knocked Kat out of her shock real quick. “Oh you little prick you just made that canon didn’t you!”
Rai shrugged a bit. “Just because the year was a bit fucky doesn’t mean we can really affect canon that easily. Though can you really blame me for being a little shit, I’m still my demon self right now and all remember? Dissociation is a bitch and a half.”
“Oh right. I Forgor. Lmao, I wish. All I get are stupid phantom limbs…”
“Alright we should probably get to it then, we’re still in front of our bedroom doors and we have a whole ass house to explore.” He said, planting his fists on his hips in a very anime way while looking around the hallway.
“...Wait a sec. You’re 18 now. You’re officially an edgy teenager again,” Kat said with the biggest shit-eating grin she could muster.
“Like you have any room to talk, I bet you woke up with a poster of Kaiba in your room or something.” He snapped back with a grin.
The grin very quickly disappears as she remembers that yes, she DID have a poster of Kaiba. With a lipstick stain. (Despite the fact that she never wears lipstick.)
She punched her new twin brother in the arm for that one.

[The Brother]
“Well, have you found your deck yet? I haven't, great time to test if I can just bullshit my way to winning things, you know?” He said, running his hand over the lowered couch’s back as they both explored the nice ass place they had found themselves living in.
“You say that like we didn’t Just leave the hallway.” His new sister replied from the kitchen as he vaulted the couch and sunk into the fine black leather. Outside temperature being almost a warm 44F so instead of being a death couch of flesh melting, it was instead a cozy couch of hugs and great smells.
“Well yeah, but past-you could have just left it in the kitchen or something.” He replied, looking around and spotting the tv remote on the coffee table. leaning forward to pick it up and see what was playing.
“Yeah… wait, wasn’t there a case on my bedside table? That was probably a deck case, actually. If I had to guess, yours is also somewhere in your room.” She joined him on the couch and started messing with her phone, pulling up a… deckbuilding site. Seemed to have a plan in mind.
“Nah I’ll leave that where it is, I don’t even know how to fucking play so I doubt the world is just gonna let me win even once.” He said, turning on the TV and flipping through the channels before stopping on an ‘urgent’ news announcement.
“Breaking news, Industrial Illusions President Maximillian Pegasus has announced his brand new Duel Monsters Tournament, taking place on his private island in 2 weeks. Every battle will be publicly televised, and every participant handpicked by Pegasus himself to battle it out for the ultimate title of King of Games. And also 3 million dollars.”
“Holy shit that news guy is built like a shit brickhouse.” Rai stated as the news alert transitioned to announcing the duelists invited to the tournament.
“Don’t you mean a brick shithouse?” Kat said with a bit of a confused glance.
“No my dear sister, I did not. So we already know basically who’s gonna win what battles, and seeing as neither of us have any jobs, what say you we go down to like a public stadium or something and start betting on the winners-” Rai was cut off from his musings by the News Caster.
“-And finally, as last minute additions, Rai and Kat Daemon!” The news caster, a man named Hughes Castore, said with an excited tone despite his deadpan features.
“Ah shitfuck,” the twins said in unison. Certainly, this would not go horribly wrong at all.
