Brighella: The Tenth Fatui Harbinger

Summary:

No one knows who the 10th Harbinger is or was. Not even their name. Almost as if they were wanted gone. Maybe it's because the entire Fatui military despised them for leaving. Because maybe. . . what if that Harbinger, was still alive, but he had cast that life away? Ashamed of his previous life working within the Fatui? Before he settled in a church with a kindhearted demon nun? All of which are why the Fatui are seeking him, hoping that one day, they might finally catch him, and he'd meet his grave and dire punishment. But first, they need to get through him and the demonic nun. The past can be stubborn to catch up, but only if you're stubborn too to push it back.

This is the story of Brighella, the lost 10th Fatui Harbinger, aka the Silver Shaker, Wolf of Deepest Mercy, real name Ruvyzvat, the second youngest of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, and known for having earned his rank at just 18 years old. We see his life before he was a part of the Fatui, during, and the day he left it all behind to start a new life beyond Teyvat. Long before his time with his beloved Sarvente.

Notes:

FUCKING FINALLY I'M BACK!!! Your favorite Dragonborn has RETURNED! Mainly cuz I've lost motivation and ideas. Well actually, I had new ideas, but they were mostly WIP, and mainly just for me. But I'M BACK, BABY! With a brand new idea! I've delved away from FNaF for the time being, now on Friday Night Funkin' instead. I've also improved a lot with the storytelling, so hopefully you guys love this better! Enjoy the story!

Chapter 1: The Empress of Love and the Silver Bard

Notes:

Note: this scene is heavily inspired by Jinu's Lament from K-Pop Demon Hunters (amazing movie btw), and I even altered the lyrics to fit the fanfic.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The courtyard of the Zapolyarny Palace was a theater of frost and power. The air bit with a cold that went deeper than skin, and a mournful wind snaked through the assembled ranks of Fatui’s elite, all standing either like statues or with arrogance. At the center of it all, standing atop a royal dais, an Archon of icy blue and white robes stood, her presence stilling the very air around her both from actual Cryo powers and her own authority: The Tsaritsa.

Her voice, whenever she spoke, wasn't loud, yet it carried to every ear, crisp and sharp as icicles.

“Our influence wanes,” she stated, a simple fact. “Sumeru speaks of us as brutes. Fontaine closed their ports to our ships. They see our strength as savagery, and our order as oppression. If left unchecked, it will invite blades to our throats we will not see coming.”

"Many of our agents in Mondstadt and Liyue have decreased significantly as well", added Pierro. "The Fatui may remain as the strongest army, but without our needs provided to us from the other lands, who knows how much weaker we'll get?"

The Harbingers and highest-ranking officers formed a silent semicircle around her. La Signora offered a venomous smile. “Then we show them the savagery they fear. Burn a port city in Inazuma for example.”

Pulcinella grunted in agreement. “Fear is a language all understand.”

But Capitano shook his head. "No. Then they'll have all the more reason to not lend us their supplies. Perhaps there can be another way in getting them to provide us what we need, one without much threatening and actual damage."

"A good thought, Capitano", said Pierro. "But how we get them to let down their guard is the question. One of many I may say."

Arlecchino, standing slightly apart from all of them, her arms crossed tightly, said nothing. Her fiery yet stoic eyes scanned the crowd, a habit born of a lifetime of assessing threats.

And most recently, training her most gifted student.

It was then that a low rumbling began to echo across the wind. Deep and resonant, like distant thunder, felt in the chest more than heard by the ears. All heads turned.

Perched atop a boulder-shaped mound of glacial ice was the newest and youngest among them. Me, Brighella. Tenth of the Fatui Harbingers. The Silver Shaker. Wolf of Deepest Mercy. My form was a silhouette against the pale moonlight, grayish-silver hair and cloak whipping around me like a banner in a storm. I was the source of the rumble, a quiet, melodic hum vibrating from my chest.

The music of a balalaika began to play, its notes plucked melodically. The sound was melancholic and intimidating all at once, weaving through the icy breeze. Music like this was common in Snezhnaya, but in this scene, it felt like a ghostly prelude.

I started to monologue, my voice in a deep yet soothing baritone, strangely deep for an eighteen-year-old. I did not shout my words. I did not need to. I projected them, landing on the crowd with a fate of prophetic lines.

[spoken]
There once was a stunning empress of ice,
Stop me if you've heard this one before,
She was in total control,
She guided our souls,
Yet the world trembled when she roared.

As I spoke, I pushed myself off the ice mound. My boots crunched on the snow-hardened ground as I began a slow, deliberate walk along the central pathway. Fatui agents, soldiers and officers alike, instinctively parted before me, creating a human canyon. New and young as I was, I was still a Harbinger, second only to the Tsaritsa herself. I kept my head low, the fearsome wolf-shaped mask, a symbol of my Harbinger status, obscuring all but my mouth, which moved with a calm, chilling, and emotionless precision.

Even when her Harbingers sang our songs,
Now all she does is mourn,
Can't guide all our souls,
And her love grows old,
Just a whisper in the dark.

The balalaika’s tempo picked up a little, a sorrowful, thrumming heartbeat. I continued to walk along the path, keeping my head low, but my voice loud enough to be heard. Then, I began to sing. My voice was no longer just deep. It was layered. Harmonic. A choir of one that seemed to make the very stones underfoot vibrate ever so slightly. Quite literally maybe.

[singing]
And will she let the cold go warm?
Is this the end of her now?
Dear Archon with the crumbling crown?
Will she let the cold go warm?

The last note hung in the air, sustained by the wind until the balalaika’s final note faded into silence. I was standing in front of the Tsaritsa now, my feet having stopped in their tracks. Still in her presence, I kept my head low in a bow, but stood tall and confident. The courtyard was frozen, not just by temperature, but by sheer, stunned disbelief and curiosity. No one moved a muscle.

The Tsaritsa’s face was a mask of carved ice, utterly emotionless. She looked at me as I was standing defiantly before her.

“Of all the Harbingers I have promoted,” she began, her voice dangerously soft, “you are the youngest, so far. The most… unique. Your duties, as outlined, includes uplifting the morale of our forces. Entertaining them with songs of our glory and strength.” She took a single, graceful step forward. “So tell me, Brighella. What matter of entertainment is here in mocking your Archon in front of all of the Fatui?”

I did not flinch. Instead, I lifted my head, and replied calmly and steadily , “It is the truth. And you know it.”

A sharp intake of breath hissed through the crowd. I can hear the low murmurs of every agent and soldier. La Signora’s smirk widened. Arlecchino’s hand drifted subtly toward the hilt of her pole arm.

But I remained calm and continued, my voice never rising. “But everyone here also knows you will not give up. You will not yield. You will not let the ice melt away. It is why you sit on the throne. It is why we follow.”

Deathly silence. For a full minute, the only sound was the relentless wind blowing across the courtyard. The Tsaritsa’s glacial eyes bore into the slits of my mask, searching for insubordination, for fear, for ambition.

But she found none. Only stark, unflinching truth.

And then, a miracle occurred. Though, I hardly considered it a "miracle" and more of a 'special exception'.

A low, soft sound escaped her lips. It grew into a dry, genuine chuckle. A flicker of life in the statue’s face. It was one of the very few times any living soul, me included, had witnessed her show emotion.

“I knew I made the right decision to make you one of us,” she said, a thread of genuine amusement in her voice. “You are anything but a sycophant. You see the crack in the glacier that others are too afraid or ignorant to acknowledge. You point it out, and you oblige to fix it.” Then, as quickly as a stoat diving into the snow, her amusement faded, replaced by razor-sharp focus. “Very well, Brighella. You have named the disease. Now prescribe the cure. What are your ideas for our… ongoing problem?”

I finally stared straight at the Tsaritsa. The faint, silver glow of my single eye through the wolf-mask fixed directly upon her, no longer subservient, but as an equal strategist.

Notes:

So whaddya think? Pls leave kudos!

Note: Again, I don't own the actual song there. The original title is Jinu's Lament from K-Pop Demon Hunters, but here, it's titled A Harbinger's Lament
