    Summary

The people of the town nestled at its base tell stories, and have addressed the forest by many names. Some call the forest a god, a creature, a monster. Some of their stories tell of the forest being kind and forgiving, patient as it assists lost hikers find their way out. Other stories depict the forest as intentionally cruel, a monster that prays on the flesh of weaker beings.

Both versions are correct. The forest is both kind and cruel, and will act with both kindness and cruelty. A monster and a god. Better, a monstrous god.

So when the last breath left the broken shell of a boy buried within its muddied branches, the forest decided to grant its wish.

"- love him for me." And so the forest did.

As the dying boy reached his quivering hand up to the forests canopy, the forest reached back.

And thus the forest became Evan, and Evan became nothing.

Or: Eddie finds there's something not quite right about his best friend. Buck's just trying to remember he's alive.
