Work Text:
The oppressive October chill seeps through the windows of the Rogerses' modest two-story house in Coolsville. Upstairs, Shaggy thrashes beneath tangled Navajo sheets, trapped in the suffocating grip of his nightmare. Captain Cutler materializes – not just a ghost, but a dripping, spectral horror encased in a corroded, light-green deep-sea diving suit straight from a maritime museum nightmare.
Every inch of the brass-bound helmet and lead-weighted boots is draped in thick, phosphorescent seaweed dredged from the Graveyard of Ships, emitting a sickly, pulsing glow that paints the bedroom walls in shifting, eerie patterns. Slimy kelp trails behind him like a shroud, leaving smeared, glowing footprints on the worn hardwood floor that sizzle faintly. His movements are jerky, unnatural, propelled by unseen currents as he advances on Shaggy. Behind the fogged, cracked faceplate, his eyes are vacant pits of pure, cold luminescence. A low, watery moan, like a drowning man’s final gasp, rattles from the helmet as a bloated, clammy hand – impossibly cold even through the dream – reaches out, fingers brushing Shaggy’s pajama sleeve.
"Join me... Davy Jones awaits..." the gurgling voice intones.
Shaggy’s scream isn’t just loud; it’s a raw, primal sound of pure terror that shreds the quiet night, echoing down the hallway and rattling the framed blueprints hanging downstairs. Below, Fred, spatula in hand, is meticulously flipping veggie burgers on the avocado-green stove. The scream hits him like a physical blow. His focus snaps instantly from grill marks to husband.
"Scoob! Man the stove!" Fred barks, his voice tight with urgency, tossing the spatula towards the Great Dane, who scrambles upright, wide-eyed. "Flip 'em on three! One... Two..."
Fred doesn't wait for three. He’s already pounding up the wooden stairs, two at a time, his socked feet thudding on the treads, his heart hammering against his ribs. He bursts into the bedroom, the scent of frying veggie patties mingling with the lingering, imagined brine of the nightmare sea. Shaggy is bolt upright, drenched in cold sweat, trembling violently, staring wide-eyed at the spot where Cutler vanished.
Fred doesn’t hesitate; he crosses the room in two strides and gathers Shaggy into his arms, murmuring low and steady against his temple, "Easy, Shag. Easy. It’s just a dream. Just a dream. I’m here."
His strong hands rub soothing circles on Shaggy’s back, grounding him back into the safe reality of their beach-chic-meets-psychedelic bedroom.
