Work Text:
"Let’s have a child."
Wave, who was just about to put a spoonful of his lunch into his mouth, stopped and lifted his eyes to his husband.
Lava was sitting across from him with a gentle expression and a pleading look. The one he always used whenever he wanted Wave to give in to something. Usually, it was asking for sex or to let him go out drinking with Tum — he allowed it, but went along — but lately, that hadn’t been the case.
Wave set his spoon aside and stared seriously at his husband.
“You know the answer, Lava.”
Wave replied and once again tried to bring the spoon to his mouth, but was stopped by Lava’s voice once more.
“Let’s have a child.”
Alright, apparently he wouldn’t be able to finish his meal.
“Lava, you can’t always bring this up out of nowhere.”
“Then let’s have a child, and I’ll stop.” He replied, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair.
Who was the younger one in this marriage again? Wave knew Lava was stubborn and persistent. Hard-headed, to be more specific. But he had learned to deal with him — or at least he thought he had, until Lava started acting more rebellious than usual.
Wave sighed.
“Lava, I already explained we can’t just have a child out of the blue.”
“Uncle Peng and the doctor have a daughter.”
“We’ve only been married for two years.” Wave leaned across the table as if that were an insurmountable reason.
“Anya’s been married for only a year and already has a child.” Lava shot back, and Wave smiled, knowing they had returned to the origin of the argument.
Five months ago, Wave had become an uncle. Uncle to a very cute and handsome little boy — obviously the baby had inherited all of his sister’s beauty. And two weeks ago, after much work and pulling strings, Wave and Lava had managed to take some time off from the resort and visit the new heir and queen.
The problem started when they arrived in the kingdom. After Lava saw Wave being all sweet and affectionate with the nephew — holding him, playing with him, putting him to sleep — he hadn’t stopped talking about them having a child. Literally hadn’t stopped.
Their nights in the kingdom had been like that.
Their trip back home had been like that.
And all the following days too.
Just like now.
But as much as Lava insisted and as much as Wave’s heart ached to deny those needy puppy-dog eyes, Wave knew adopting a child was no joke. And Lava needed to understand that too.
So the verdict had already been given.
“The answer is still no, Lava.” He got up from the table, taking his plate to the sink, turning his back on his husband before a part of him started to give in.
He turned on the faucet and began washing the dishes. But he didn’t hear anything behind him. Nothing except the sound of water hitting dirty plates. Had he upset Lava? Or been too harsh? He didn’t want Lava to be angry.
Wave bit his lip and was just about to turn around to check if his husband was still sitting at the table. But before he could move, he felt two strong hands wrap around his waist and a very familiar chin rest on his shoulder.
“Lava…” Wave whispered, completely forgetting about the dishes.
“Wave, don’t you want to have a child with me?” He asked, and Wave’s mind almost went blank.
Did he want to?
He had never really thought about it.
Of course, it could be a possibility. Why couldn’t it? But… but it was all so sudden.
Wave hadn’t taken this whole child thing seriously because he assumed Lava was just intoxicated by the family scene he’d seen in the kingdom and would forget about it after a few days. But that didn’t happen.
He was still here, trying every possible way to weaken his heart.
And God, it was so hard to stay strong.
“I already told you it’s not that.” Wave sighed again. “Adopting a child is an important step and can’t be done just any way.”
Lava tightened his grip on his waist and snuggled his head into the curve of his pale neck. How could his husband be so clingy and needy? That was usually his role, not the other way around.
“I know it’s important and I don’t want to do it just any way. I want to do it with you.”
It was like being struck by an arrow in the chest.
It really was a difficult situation. A fight that was becoming very hard, and one Wave felt he was at a disadvantage in. Lava was an experienced Muay Thai fighter, and he was someone who had spent most of his life being protected, not fighting.
But, of course, that didn’t stop Wave from usually having the upper hand in most arguments. In fact, the victory was usually his. But this was different, because Wave wasn’t the one begging for something — Lava was.
And honestly? A boxing match would have been easier.
But he still had to be rational.
Wave pulled back slightly. Just enough to turn and look into Lava’s dark eyes.
“I’m not going to tell you yes.” His words were direct, but not completely firm. “But I promise I’ll think about it.”
Suddenly, a huge smile appeared on Lava’s face, looking at Wave as if he had an angel in his arms.
“Are you serious?” Lava asked, unable to believe it.
“Mhm.” Wave nodded, thinking he didn’t want to regret it.
But he didn’t even have time to think properly about regret.
Lava pushed him against the sink and kissed him. At first it wasn’t with desire or lust, but with tenderness and warmth, making Wave feel like he was floating. But then… then Lava couldn’t hold back his boldness and gripped Wave’s thighs tightly, lifting him so he could wrap his legs around his waist.
Wave let out a grunt from the suddenness.
“Lava! What are you doing?”
The older man smiled mischievously and answered while leaving a light bite on the curve of his neck:
“Taking you to make a baby.”
“What are you saying, Lava?!” He gave Lava’s shoulder a light smack, but Lava kept smiling. “I can’t get pregnant.”
“But there’s no harm in trying.”
Wave was about to scold him for talking nonsense, but before the words could leave his mouth, his lips were seized by Lava’s kiss. His lips being sucked and nibbled, making him moan softly and melt in Lava’s arms.
And that was terrible. Very terrible.
Terrible because he knew what would happen next and what it meant. Terrible because Wave had no intention of refusing and knew he would enjoy it until he went crazy.
So he didn’t protest when he felt Lava’s tongue touch his, when those big hands slid under his shorts, when the skin of his shoulder was sucked on, and when he was carried into their bedroom.
The bedroom door opened in a rush and closed even faster.
---
The sex was good, but now he had to deal with the consequences.
Wave thought about this while gathering the materials from the class he had just taught the island’s children.
It had been two weeks since he promised Lava he would think about having a child, and since then there had been no further mention of the subject. Which was bad, because it meant Lava was waiting eagerly for an answer, expecting it to be positive.
Ahhhhhh.
He shouldn’t have let his heart weaken! Because now his husband was full of hope, and Wave was still hesitant about his decision. No matter how much he thought and reflected, he couldn’t stop worrying.
The issue had never been about wanting or not wanting to have a child with Lava. The truth was, deep down, he was scared. For so long he had lived in fear of being a disappointment to his father, who had wanted him to become king, and now he feared he might spend the rest of his life afraid of disappointing a child.
It was such a huge responsibility. And what if he couldn’t handle it?
He trembled just thinking about an answer.
Wave sighed, and one of his students entered the classroom.
“Teacher Wave, Uncle Lava is here” — the child announced with a gentle smile, which Wave returned in kind.
“Thank you, I’m coming.”
The boy nodded and left as if he had just completed a superhero mission. That made Wave feel a little lighter, though still tense.
He would be brave and talk seriously with Lava once they got home. It might be hard to break his expectations, but it had to be done.
Wave took a deep breath and, slinging his bag over his shoulder, left the school. He made sure to lock the door properly and walked toward the parking lot, where Lava should be waiting by the car.
And Lava really was there — but not just standing by the car. Alone. As usual.
He was standing beside one of the mothers of the students. The woman was holding her baby, just a few months old. A beautiful little girl with curly hair, a cute butterfly clip on the side of her head, wearing a blue dress and waving her tiny hands and feet while Lava made funny faces and tickled her belly.
Wave froze. Paralyzed. Stuck in that moment. Not blinking, not moving, not even sure if he was breathing.
He just stayed there, watching Lava smile broadly as he played and caressed the little baby. Wave couldn’t understand… but his heart beat faster. And he couldn’t help a silly thought… maybe an irrational one…
Him sitting in a chair in the garden, watching Lava playing in the dirt with a child. Their child. A child who would later call him “daddy,” and Lava would look at Wave with a smile and shout for him to join them in the dirt pile.
Finally, the woman said goodbye, and Lava waved for a few more seconds before turning and noticing Wave’s presence.
“Wave, I didn’t notice you were out already.” He said with a smile, but Wave showed no reaction. “Shall we go home?”
Wave stared for another moment before closing the distance between them.
Was it really a silly, irrational thought?
“Yes.” That’s what he answered, but Lava only raised an eyebrow, confused.
“Hm?”
“Let’s have a child.”
Lava’s brow furrowed even more, his eyes widening as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing, as if he doubted he had heard it right. But Wave was serious. Very serious. Far too serious to be joking.
Lava practically jumped on Wave, holding his face.
“Are you really serious?”
“Mhm.” Wave nodded as Lava cradled his face with all the love in the world. “Let’s have a child. Yours and mine.”
Wave knew how crazy it sounded. More than anyone, he knew. But a little bit of the fear in his fragile heart had disappeared. Because the scene he had just witnessed made him realize something important.
He wouldn’t be alone in this.
He would have Lava by his side, because Lava was his husband and his family.
Lava let go of Wave’s face and turned around, running his hands through his hair and then over his face. He was acting like a madman about to explode, but it wasn’t madness — it was emotion. Wave found it so funny he wanted to laugh, but held back, because his husband really did look like he was panicking.
Finally, he turned back to Wave, his face red and expression still shocked.
“Wave, I think I’m going to faint.”
Okay, now he had to laugh. And he did.
“You’re being ridiculous. If you’re about to faint just because of this, what will happen when you’re called ‘daddy’ for the first time?” Wave teased, and Lava smiled faintly.
The tall, strong man, who always seemed strict with others but was extremely loving and needy with those he loved, stepped closer.
His expression was a bit more serious now.
“Do you really want this?” He asked tensely. “I don’t want you to make any decision just to please me.”
“It’s not for you,” Wave replied without hesitation, quickly. “It’s not, Lava. It’s for both of us.”
“Wave…”
“Having a child with you was never unthinkable to me, I was just afraid I wouldn’t be able to… to be a good father and the person a child would need.” He confessed and, with a sigh, held Lava’s hand. “But I realized now that if I have you by my side, everything will be fine. We’ll take care of and protect this child with everything we have. We’ll be loving parents and a happy family.”
The wind passed over them, and a tender smile appeared on Wave’s face, while Lava swallowed hard and a solitary tear slid discreetly down his cheek.
He didn’t know what else to say, so he simply acted. He pulled Wave into a strong, warm hug. Held him tight, as if wanting to show the full weight of his love.
“I promise we’ll be the happiest family in the world.”
Wave hugged him back.
“I know we will.”
The embrace grew tighter until Lava pulled back just enough to look at his beloved.
But his look wasn’t the same as before. It wasn’t only emotion, love, gratitude, and euphoria — it was something… more mischievous. And Wave knew very well what that meant.
“Can we make a baby now?”
“Lava, why are you so obsessed with this? I can’t get pregnant.”
“I know, I know.” He shook his head like a whiny child. “But didn’t you enjoy trying?”
Damn it!
Wave hated this. That little way his husband always had of destroying any chance he had of arguing. And worse… making him change his mind.
“Let’s go,” he answered. He grabbed his husband’s hand and pulled him along. “Quickly, before I change my mind.”
Lava didn’t reply, but smiled in satisfaction as he let himself be led by his husband.
The two of them went home, and Wave felt no regret about the decision he had made, because soon he wouldn’t just have the husband he loved so much, but also a child he would love with the same intensity.
They would be a bigger family.
A livelier home.
They would be good parents.
