Memories Adrift [not done]

Summary:

Wei Wuxian over hears about some juniors gossiping about how clingy Wei Wuxian is to Hangguang-Jun and they question whether Wei Wuxian's feelings were returned or one sided. The at first confident Wei Wuxian looses confidence as Lan Zhan's cold replies only strengthened the juniors condenscending words.
So when Lan Wangji returns to their hanshi at night, they had a fight, Wei Wuxian was upset with himself for burdening Lan Zhan and Lan Wangji was just confused why Wei Ying was avoiding him.

"Aiya just get lost Lan Zhan! I'm tired."
"Wei Ying?.."

They sleep seperately that night, but in the quiet night soft music mysteriously pulls Wei Wuxian into Lan Wangji's dream, and Wei Wuxian witnesses the ghosts of the past haunting his beloveds nightmare, regreting every word that left his mouth and stabbed his Lan Zhan in the heart

Chapter 1: The Misunderstanding

Chapter Text

Wei Wuxian had a great day, Everything was going smoothly for him

He had a succesfull nighthunt with Lan Zhan and the juniors the night before, and was getting his praises from the amazed juniors today, he was smilling and patting the blabbering cute adorable Lan's happily.

He even got Shizui, Jingyi, Jin Ling, and Zichen gifts for being so brave on the night hunt!

Until, he was walking towards to kitchen to grab a bite, (and sprinkle some of his favorite spice)

When he heard hushed murmurs behind a door, he re traced his steps sneakily, and pasted his ear on the thin walls

"did you hear? Wei-Gongzi defeated the Yao last night with Hangguang-Jun!" a high pitched whisperer says excitedly, and Wei Wuxian smiles

"Yes, but did you know that Hangguang-Jun basically did all the work? Wei Wuxian didn't even do anything." A more monotone voice says, making Wei Wuxian quirk his eye brow in interest

Sure, Lan Zhan was great and he would agree that he helped a lot on the night hunt, and Wei Wuxian was having trouble with Mo Xianyu's low spiritual power- but wasn't this a bit too cold?

"Ah, you can't just say that.. He-"

"Clung to Hangguang-Jun's hand all the time and cheered on helping with moral support? not to mention he almost got Hangguang-Jun injured by distracting him all the time" The cold voice says, striking arrows to Wei Wuxian's chest

Alright, maybe that was a bit too blunt, but surely Lan Zhan wouldn't think so, right?

"And just look at them, you can clearly see how tired Hangguang-Jun is whenever that Wei Wuxian is around, yelling into his ears and dragging his body all around and stuff. "

Wei Wuxian stills, Lan Zhan just has a hard time expressing himself, ofcourse he would look like he just stubbed his toe when actually he was smilling.

"That's a bit blunt.."

"I'm only stating facts from the field, I mean, have you seen Hangguang-Jun smilling at 'Wei-Gongzi'? No? Who would."

Wei Wuxian had enough, and stood up and left.

His hunger forgotten as his stomach twisted in knots

---------

"Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying waves, and Lan Wangji turns and catches a running Wei Ying in his arms

Warm

"Wei Ying" Lan Zhan greets, though his whole body felt heavy from walking, attending meetings and writting letters all day, all the weight lifted as Wei Ying's laughter rang through the air

"Did you hear? all the juniors were so amazed at our extraordinary night hunt, that they wouldn't stop crowding me the whole day!"

Lan Wangji hums a reply, as they continue their walk towards the diciplinary hall, there were a few naughty Lan juniors that needed supervising

"And they were saying so much at the same time that I had to slow them down into a straight line! haha u should've seen the obidient little Lan's forming a straight line just to say some words!"

Lan Wangji nods, the juniors were very obidient, and it was a good thing that they respected Wei Ying

"I barely had time to buy gifts for Shizui and the others, but when i gave them their gifts they were basically glowing and jumping up and down like children recieving their first pay!"

Wei Ying giggles, and turns to look at Lan Wangji, but then his chatter stops, and Lan Wangji feels like something is amiss

"Ah- did some juniors get into trouble?" Wei Ying asks

"Yes" did Wei Ying want to accompany him?

"Alright then, I'll let you do your business in peace, I'll just head to the kitchen and grab a bite, im suddenly feeling hungry after all that excitement."

Wei Ying smiles nervously, something is wrong.

"Do not eat late." Lan Wangji reminds, Wei Ying was already skinny, he needed to eat more to get healthier.

"Aiya- alright Lan Zhan, you go discipline those naughty juniors, I'll even bring you some food!"

"There is no need" Lan Wangji had already just eaten after the meeting, Wei Ying has to focus on his own food to grow healthier

There is a moment of silence that Lan wangji fears that the Wei Ying he was talking to was just an imagination, but then Wei Ying smiles and Lan Wangji releases a breath

"Alright, have a good time punishing the juniors Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying smiles, a wrong smile that doesn't look right, it makes Lan Wangji so uneasy that he doesnt wave back in concern.

But once Wei Ying was out of sight, the ruffling inside the discipline room jolts Lan Wangji to reality,

Right, the juniors.

He enters the room, and begins the tiring task of watching the juniors do their punishments.

-----

Lan Wangji frowns at the paper infront of him, he was having migrains just from reading the senders name.

This incompetent sect leader had been asking for advice from the Lan Clan their whole history, and Xiong-Zhang would always reply with words so helpfull and kind that Lan Wangji struggled to copy his sweet words.

Why do they have to help this Sect Leader if they were clearly competent enough to solve their own minor problems? why does this sect leader want so much yet return so little? what justice was present in this tradery?

Lan Wangji takes a deep sigh and was about to place down his quil, when suddenly the door to the hanshi burst open and a loud yell erupted from it,

"LAN ZHAAANNN!!"

Lan Wangji's migraine spiked and he winces as the quil drops from his hand

Then Wei Ying skids to a turn stop to Lan Wangji's writing area with a bright smile

"THE BUNNIES! THEY GAVE BIRTH TO NEW BABIES! YOU HAVE TO COME AND SEE!!"

Wei Ying was bouncing up and down, and Lan Wangji smiles at how much he ressembled a bunny himself

He was about to agree when he suddenly remembers about the more important letters that were due to send tonight, if he could finish them now he and Wei Ying would have more time alone later this night, he wasn't really reluctant on missing out the bunnies, but he and Wei Ying's 'everyday' is far more important.

"..Not now, Wei Ying" Lan Wangji felt bad, for leaving Wei Ying to see the bunnies for himself

"Ah.. Alright Lan Zhan, I understand, some sect leaders are quite demanding- I'll go and show Shizui then! and when your not so busy we can see the baby bunnies together!"

Lan Wangji smiles, and hums a reply, he hears Wei Ying's happy skipping walk out the door and sighs as his migraine knocks on his brains like a hammer, each step Wei Ying took felt like it was rattling his brains physically. Guess he better get the letters done quickly then.

Lan Wangji picks up his dropped quil, and frowns at the splattered ink, nearly missing his robe, he places the lesser important letters in a pile and begins working on the urgent ones with newly fueled determination.

-------

It was night, and Wei Wuxian was staring at Lan Zhan's neatly placed stacks of letters, didn't Lan Zhan say that he was going to send them today? Why was there still a pile present on his table then?

Was it just an excuse to not hangout with him?- no way.

his thoughts swirled mindlessly.

Thinking back on the conversations he had with Lan Zhan throughout the day, maybe the juniors were.. No.

But..

'There is no need.' sounded so cold

And-

'Not now Wei Ying.' work is more important than him now?

Not even the bunnies could- or maybe it was only him being the problem?

Wei Wuxian didn't even turn to greet Lan Zhan as the doors of the hanshi opened and closed, and footsteps entered the room

"Wei Ying?" Lan Zhan calls, and he almost gave in immediately, but no, he was going to only annoy Lan Zhan again.

"Lan Zhan" Wei Wuxian greets calmly, not too loud as it seemed to annoy Lan Zhan.

There was silence for a while, and then Wei Wuxian heared the soft thud of bichen being placed in his stand, and the rustling of Lan Zhan getting closer, his arms circle around Wei Wuxian's waist, and Wei Wuxian bites his bottom lip.

Just how much is Lan Zhan willing to fake infront of him? he was clearly tired of him-

"Did I do something wrong?" Lan Zhan asks, and Wei Wuxian's heart clenches

"No- Lan Zhan, never- It's just.." How was he supposed to ask? 'do you still love me?' thats too desperate! 'Am I annoying you?' thats a rhetorical question! ofcourse he was!

"Wei Ying? What's wrong?" Lan Zhan walks around him and looks at his face, Lan Zhan was pouting- why? was he annoying him with this bratty act?

"Aiyah, nothings wrong Lan Zhan, lets just head to bed." he changes the topic, he felt like crying, and doing it infront of Lan Zhan was probably not going to help their situation

But Lan Zhan holds on tightly to his wrist

"No, tell me" Lan Zhan Lan Zhan, always with his limited yet straight forward words

Was 'there is no need' and 'not now' straight to the point? Wasn't he clearly telling him to not bother him and go away?

Wei Wuxian grits his teeth and tugs his arm loose from Lan Zhan

"Aiyah, just get lost Lan Zhan. I know your tired and so am I, let's just head to bed." he has to head to bed before he accidentally says anything he doesn't mean, his mind was in shambles! he had to take a breather first-

"Wei Ying?.. "

Then Wei Wuxian freezes as Lan Zhan's face comes into view

His eyes were wide and his hand still hang in the air, mid reach and his face looked hurt

Wei Wuxian was so close to running up to him and hugging him tightly, apoligizing and showering him with kisses he desserves, but he holds back, Lan Zhan was tired of him. No hugs or kisses were ever going to help.

Lan Zhan was silent as he nodded, face facing the floor and walking towards his bed, laying down on his bed and leaving space for Wei Ying.

Wei Wuxian takes one look, and walks away,

He's going to sleep on the guest bed. Sleeping with Lan Zhan was only going to disturb Lan Zhan's beauty sleep.

He lays down onto the guest bed in a heap. He wasn't going to actually sleep, it was a lie since Lan Zhan was obviously tired from todays full schedule and Wei Wuxian's shenanigans.

His eyes burn as the first drops of tears fell,

He knew Lan Zhan was going to get tired of him sooner or later, but it still hurts.

He had no will to sleep at all,

But then, he heard the soft music of a Guqin outside the hanshi, he blinked, suddenly feeling his eyelids droop and grow heavy.

Lan Zhan was always so skill full with his Guqin, unlike Wei Wuxian's whenever he so much as touches ChengQing..

Surely a little nap was going to help him clear his mind, he will look for a way to live with Lan Zhan without burdening him further in the morning, and run away when all of his things were ready to leave

Then he closes his eyes and he feels a weird pull on his soul, he furrows his brows, but then passes out as 'sleep' takes over his tired body.

------

In the back, a girl with long black hair and a blue Lan mask covering their face, a Lan forehead ribbon shines into the night as they pluck their Guqin calmly into the silent night

They sat right outside of Hangguang-Jun's hanshi window, their eyes scanning the sleeping figure for any signs for waking up

There was none, and the song ends with a long note.

The let out a sigh, and pack up their Guqin, leaving the area and wishing the lucky couple a good night with a smile hidden under their mask
