They were spending time in Scotland when the first fall storm happened. And during the fall storm, Nile noticed that the rest of The Old Guard all looked up at the ceiling once in a while with a nervous look.
Nile: "Could I ask you something?"
Joe and Nicky nodded, while Andy and Booker didn't hear anything because of how loud they had turned the telly on.
Nile: "Why are you all looking up at the ceiling?"
Nicky: "Because we have all tried staying at safe houses where the roof wasn't up to today's standards. There have been holes in the roofs, some have even flown away, and then there are the things in between."
Joe: "You can call it an old habit we all have when we look up at the ceiling during a storm."
Joe decided to lay his head in Nicky's lap, who welcomed him.
Nile: "Okay, I understand, but what do you mean by the things in between?"
Joe and Nicky chuckled.
Joe: "Well, you see. There was that time... Do you remember that time in Malta, Nicky?"
Nicky: "Which time in Malta?"
Joe made a facial expression that made Nicky smile.
Nicky: "Oh, that time in Malta. I don't think Nile is old enough for that story yet."
Nile looked at Joe and Nicky with big, puppy eyes.
Nile: "Come on, please. Tell me the story. Please."
Nicky looked at Joe while running his fingers through Joe's curls.
Joe: "Okay, but it is not our fault if you can't sleep tonight."
Nile: "You don't need to worry about that."
Joe took Nicky's hand in his.
Joe: "Malta, 1588..."
Nicky: "No, it is 1587, because something totally different happened the year after, while we were in Malta."
Joe: "Yeah, you are right. So, Malta, 1587, and we were after..."
By the time Joe was done telling his story, the fall storm was over.
