Chapter 1: rpf is a disease
Notes:
First things first. Twitter work skin credit to starskin and credit to ThatPersonWhoLikes for the inspiration of having this first chapter told through the fandom's perspective/reactions. Also, credit to myself, I guess, because the overall plot of this is inspired by my What Happens In Vegas AU edit I made for Mistynat Week.
Now, to the rambling. I've made a really long SMAU on Twitter for another fandom last year and have been wanting to make a Mistynat one for awhile, but feared I was too outside of the fandom (and the fandom is too quiet right now) for it to get the kind of engagement that would make all that effort worth it. So, I figured I'd post it here, instead. But when I tried uploading images onto ao3, I found they looked too different on different devices and knew that would bother me too much, so I started looking into work skins like I'd seen other people use and here we are. I'm still new to working with them, so to keep things easier for me to code and to give myself some guidelines on a project that could be overwhelming, each chapter is going to tell a part of the story with a different social media platform. This first chapter is told entirely through fan tweets, next will be emails back and forth, a future chapter will be a Reddit post, Tumblr posts, texts, etc.
While I never really had the full details of my hypothetical Twitter SMAU down, I did have a lot of stray ideas, backstory and plotlines in mind, a lot of which I was able to sprinkle seeds to throughout this first chapter. I'm not sure how much development those side plots for the other characters will get in future chapters, but they were fun to add in and hint at as a way to flesh the world out a little. I'm also not sure how much explanation or information to give you guys upfront about the world/backstory because I'm curious how well I was able to drop info/exposition through fan tweets. I've added a character/ship guide to the notes at the end in case you need/want them, but in an attempt to make things a bit easier to remember, I gave them all characters with names that start with the same letter as their names; Nat plays Nic, Misty plays Michelle, and so on. I guess you guys can tell me how much you were able to follow in the comments, and I can clear anything up (though, of course, some things are vague by design and will be expanded on/explored in future chapters). The details of the show within this aren't really important, but I guess to give a little bit of context for the in-universe rpf shipping, I'll say that Travis and Nat's characters have been in a long standing canon relationship on the show, while Lottie's character is Nat's rival turned best friend in the show, so of course, both ships have their shippers, and those shippers are too invested in their offscreen relationships, too.
Lastly, again, these are work skins. So make sure that you have Show Creator's Style turned on (if it is, there should be a button at the top of the page that says Hide Creator's Style right now) to see this as I've intended, otherwise this will look a damn mess. I've also seen other people mention that if you use custom work skins in general for ao3, you might want to disable those because it can mess with how things are seen.

I've had two different people read it over to tell me how it flowed, but I'd also rambled to both those people about my ideas and the plot for it before they read it over, so they had more context than you guys had. This chapter is much less fun and much shorter, but it was needed for the plot set up. I have literally never written Walter or Ben before, let alone know what they or any professionals would sound like in these types of emails, but just go with it.

Good morning, Mr. Scott. This is Misty Quigley’s publicist/PR agent, Walter Tattersall. I hope you don’t mind me emailing you. I prefer my business communications to be on some kind of record and email seemed more appropriate than texting for this conversation.
I’m assuming you’ve heard the “happy” news about our clients by now and I thought it best that we discuss the matter and come to an agreement on how best to handle this issue that is good for both Misty and Natalie.
This is a time sensitive matter, so please reply as soon as you can. Thank you.

Hey, Walter. First, you can just call me Ben. Second, emails are fine if that’s what you’re comfortable with. And third, I can’t say I expected to wake up to any of this this morning, but I’ve certainly woken up to far worse news about Nat.
I appreciate you reaching out to coordinate with me, but I’m not really sure it’s necessary. I’ve already left a message with our team’s lawyer about getting annulment proceedings started. Do you mean drafting up a joint statement about the wedding? I was just about to start writing one up to send to People, but if you think it’s better we write one together, I’m not opposed to that idea. Just let me know.
Thank you, Benjamin. I’m sure this pales in comparison to some of Natalie’s other antics, but this is quite out of the ordinary for Misty. I’m much more used to stopping things from making headlines than dealing with the aftermath of said headlines, but I must admit that I’m quite excited to stretch my PR muscles.
Which brings me to my proposal (no pun intended!) for why I think we need to work together on this. I understand why an annulment was your first instinct, but I caution you against reacting too rashly. Instead of finding the quickest way to undo this marriage, I happen to think we should be focusing on how we sell it to best benefit both of our clients.
I have a few angles I think could really work, but I’m interested to hear your insight and ideas as well.

And I’m sorry, I think I’m misunderstanding you. Are you seriously suggesting that Nat and Misty stay legally married? Why would they do that? To what end?
Yes, I certainly am. I at least think it should be considered before it’s dismissed. What kind of PR people would we be if we didn’t look at all possible angles of a story? Hear me out.
Natalie’s reputation is horrible. Beyond the drinking and drugs and rehab and arrests that plague her personal life, her professional life isn’t any better, with stories of her always being late and unruly on set. With all due respect, I’m actually stunned that you haven’t done more to counteract any of this, especially with the show coming to an end next year. Your team needs to be planning for Natalie’s career post show, and if you haven’t yet, let me give you a sneak preview: it’s not good.
The tabloids had already been questioning how successful Natalie’s latest rehab stint was, and a drunken Vegas wedding is going to answer that question for them. The last thing Natalie needs is another, stronger round of “Bratalie” headlines. Do you think respectable studios and directors are going to want to work with an actress they can’t rely on? An actress that is not only said to show up late or drunk to set (if she shows up at all), but one they also have to worry is going to need to be checked into rehab or have a mental breakdown half way through production?
But if we play this right, you can completely change that perception with this marriage. I’d be happy to elaborate on how if you’re willing to listen...
I don’t really appreciate the judgment and assessment of Nat or how I do my job but you’re right about one thing, I wouldn’t be doing a good job if I didn’t consider every possible avenue before deciding on the best one for my client.
So fine. Let’s see how good of a publicist you are: sell me on how letting Nat stay married to her unpopular nobody costar (no offense to you or Misty) is going to save her career.

First things first, I think we need to correct and rewrite the narrative. TMZ reported that Misty and Natalie were not in a relationship when they got drunk and married in Vegas, which, I don’t need to tell you, makes them look immature, reckless, and even trashy. This will no doubt further the Britney Spears comparisons for Natalie, and you don’t want that. But if they were in a long term committed relationship, the wedding can be spun as impulsive and romantic, especially if we can say they were sober. We would need to find out TMZ’s Vegas source and what pictures or videos they have before we see if that could be plausible without being refuted.
As for why you would want to do that… Why wouldn’t you? What gives the impression of stability to the media and general population faster than marriage? Look at Justin Bieber. He’s still a mess but he was able to hide it pretty well for a few years, wasn’t he? And Natalie wouldn’t just be married, she’d be married to a relatively lowkey, professional actress, who has no scandals or bad publicity (thanks to yours truly!).
We craft a love story. They went from friends to lovers, Misty and the power of love is what made Natalie’s last rehab stint finally stick. She’s helped Natalie get her life together and keep it together. Do not underestimate how much America loves comeback stories wrapped up in love stories.
If we can get Natalie to agree to this, it will help you change the comparison conversation from Britney Spears to Robert Downey Jr. He has an Oscar now, in case you’ve forgotten.
Fine. I’ll have to do a lot of convincing to get Nat to agree to it, but I’ll try to talk to her about it, because you’re right, you made some decent points.
But before I do, I have to know because I know she’ll ask. What’s in it for Misty? I know you didn’t come to me with this proposition out of the goodness in your heart.
Excellent news! I have full faith in your ability to get Natalie onside and as a show of confidence, I’ll give you full transparency.
What’s in it for Misty? Is it not obvious? You said it yourself. She’s not exactly a household name, nor is she even popular amongst the fans of the show. Did you know she has the lowest follower count of the entire original cast? Even the supporting cast! Nothing we’ve tried has boosted those numbers in any meaningful way, but I obviously don’t need to tell you how much lasting publicity Misty would get for not only being linked romantically to someone as talked about as Natalie, but for being the woman that tamed her and got her to settle down. Far more than she’ll get if this marriage is swiftly annualed and forgotten about by the end of the month.
But it’s not just about exposure. Natalie isn’t the only one that has a bumpy career path ahead of her once the show is over. If things stay the way they are, Misty has a few more years left of playing the stock nerdy character, and then she can maybe transition into homely best friend roles if she’s lucky, but frankly, she’s far too talented for that. This could change that for her. Natalie isn’t just talked about for her troubles and her scandals, but also because she’s attractive. She’s lusted after, a sex symbol. If we can make the world believe that Natalie not only loves Misty, but is actually attracted to her, that could flip Misty’s image on its head and open a lot of new doors for her.
This is a mutually beneficial plan, and it’s a good one. Convince Natalie. It doesn’t have to be forever, just a couple of years. Surely that’s worth saving her career.
I talked to her. She yelled at me. It took some convincing and she’s not happy about it, but she agreed. So write a bullshit statement up and send it to me to approve, then I’ll send it to People.
This is what I like to hear, Benjamin! I knew you could do it. Give me half an hour and I’ll whip up that statement for you! You can thank me later!

Well, I went with fandom's reaction to the PR statement first because this way, I can include the casts' reaction to it next chapter and I already had this Twitter skin installed, so. I was originally going to do this as a post on the show's subreddit but I didn't want to figure out what the whole statement would be or have to write a whole People article that the OP would post; this way, I could just write the relevant snippets. Also, I just feel like stan Twitter would have much funnier reactions than the Reddit fandom and well, we already met so many of the stans in chapter 1, it only felt right to show their reactions to the fake dating lie. Anyway, please just use your imagination and pretend the pics I used are Mistynat and not a random hetero couple that got married in Vegas. My options were limited.
