Inktober Day 10: Sweep + Set Up By Friends

You go to a party at the Last Drop, and Silco is having a hard time asking you to dance…

Work Text:

You weren’t sure what had drawn you to the party at the Last Drop that night. Maybe you just wanted to forget about life for a while, to have one night of freedom before yet another grueling workday.

You sat at a small table in the corner, your head propped up on your elbow as you casually sipped your drink.

“Come on, Sil, it’s just a dance!” You recognized Felicia’s voice from across the room. She was talking to Silco, no doubt encouraging him to dance with someone he admired.

You smiled and shook your head. How could someone as brilliant as Silco have so much trouble finding a date? He was polite, insightful, not to mention handsome.

Okay, maybe you had a little crush on him.

You’d tried asking him about his love life once. His face had immediately flushed pink, and he’d quickly changed the subject. You giggled to yourself as you remembered how adorable he looked when he was flustered.

He seemed to be having a similar reaction at that very moment over at the bar. Even from far away, you could see the way his cheeks had taken on a bright, rosy glow.

Janna have mercy, you could feel your own cheeks heating up as you watched him. You turned away, embarrassed, before choosing  to focus on your drink instead.

“The worst they can say is no,” you heard Felicia’s voice, closer this time, as you took another sip, “go on, sweep them off their feet!”

“They seem busy—” Silco attempted to protest, but Felicia wasn’t giving up. They must have been at the next table by this point.

“At least talk to them.”

By the time you looked up from your drink, the two of them were already at your table.

Wait a minute…

“My friend thinks you’re cute.” Felicia grinned, taking a seat across from you.

“Fel…” Silco was standing awkwardly nearby, clearly embarrassed.

“Um…” You began, suddenly a little flustered yourself. “Hi, Silco…”

Silco gave you a half-smile and a small wave. You patted the extra seat next to yours, inviting him over. He gingerly made his way to the seat, but as soon as he sat down, Felicia was already gone, giving him a final thumbs up as she retreated back to the bar. You could see the panic in his eyes when he realized the two of you were alone. He looked around, observing the crowd around you, avoiding your gaze.

“So,” you attempted to make conversation, “how’s the party?”

“So far so good,” he shrugged, smiling, “it’ll be a pain in the ass to make sure everyone’s out of here by midnight, though.”

You smiled back, laughing. “Yeah, I bet you’ve got stories, huh?”

“You have no idea.” He chuckled, grinning wider. “Last week, I found someone hiding in the back alley after one of these. Had to hide him in an empty crate when enforcers came around the next morning.”

You laughed, imagining Silco trying to fit a grown man into a space meant for cargo. Poor guy. Poor Silco.

“Well, I guess he brought a new meaning to ‘bottom of the barrel,’ didn’t he?”

Silco began laughing along with you at your remark, shaking his head playfully.

Suddenly, the jukebox in the corner whirred to life. The two of you looked over to see Vander, Silco’s friend and co-owner of the bar, making a selection.

A wave of nostalgia washed over you as you heard the first few notes begin to play. It was a familiar song, a love song that you’d both heard a thousand times over.

Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Silco shoot a look of dismay at Vander, who laughed and shook his head, giving him the same thumbs up Felicia had earlier.

Silco looked back at you, and you noticed his face go slightly pink again. He quickly looked away, but turned back toward you when he felt your hand on his shoulder.

“Silco,” you stood up, offering him your hand, “would you like to dance?”

He smiled back, taking your hand and letting you lead him across the floor.

“I’d like nothing more.”

Well, who was sweeping who off their feet now?
