If Love Is Just a Chemical Reaction, Is There a Pill to Take? (Something to Quell This Ache?)

Summary:

Moon wasn’t good with feelings. Hell, they weren’t good with relationships, period, especially with Sun. They were barely friends, or at least he thought so. They shared a body, but they never talked much unless for advice or to switch who was fronting.

So, why was he feeling this way? Why did he feel this way?

OR

Idk man, saw this lyric from Black Hole Fantasy by The Crane Wives and it made the brain worms wiggle.
(Title from Black Hole Fantasy by The Crane Wives.)

Sun - Male (He/Him) & Bisexual

Work Text:

Moon wasn't good with feelings. Happiness, sadness, fear, it was all foreign to them. They’d feel them, sure, but they didn’t understand them. They weren’t good with relationships either.

Whenever Moon was in control, they never spoke to anyone but the children. Maybe Vanessa, if she came during naptime, maybe the other glamrocks, if they passed one of them during patrols, but they were few and far between.

They certainly wouldn’t call any of them his friends. The only one would be Sun, and that was barely. Neither of them spoke much to their counterparts unless it was for advice or when one of them was about to do something stupid.

Moon didn’t understand feelings or relationships, but this feeling was scarily close to the feeling he’d read about, love.

Which was crazy! He couldn’t be in love with Sun; they barely know each other.

But the signs were all there; his fans clicked on every time he thought of his sunny counterpart (which was often), he’d often pick out items he knew Sun would love, and he caught himself all the time wondering how Sun was doing.

All the signs pointed to it, but there was only one way to be sure.

Roxy wasn’t quite sure what she was expecting, but it wasn’t quite this.

Her room was dimmed, the only lights coming from her LEDs. Moon and Sun had told them long ago that LED lights don’t trigger the switch, nor do flashlights, to prevent intruders from triggering a switch, leaving Sun defenceless in the face of danger.

“So, why did you need me?” she asked, crossing her arms.

“How did you know you liked- loved Chica?” Moon asked. Okay, so they weren’t beating around the bush.

“Why?” she asked. “I’m not sure exactly. I guess I found out since I wanted to hang out with her more. I think we were going after each other for a while; half of her room is filled with trinkets I got for her.”

Moon growled as he brought his hands to his face and let out a muffled scream.

Roxy startled, “Why do you ask?”

Moon said something in their hands. How were they even muffling their voice? All of their voice boxes were in their chest.

“What?”

“I think I love someone,” Moon repeated, looking back up at Roxy.

“Oh,” Roxy muttered, “how long has it been?”

“I don’t know?” Moon grabbed his hat to calm himself. “Maybe a month? Probably longer, I just realised that it might be love, but we’re barely friends!”

“I don’t know about that,” Roxy said, “I mean, while you don’t talk to the others and Sun does, only you two know each other well. I’m sure he considers you two friends.”

Moon squeaked, “Sun? Who said anything about Sun?!”

“You’re telling me it’s someone else?” Roxy asked, raising an eyebrow. “What, you actually like one of the staff bots?”

Roxy could practically feel the disgust radiating from them, despite their faceplate staying the same. “Ew, no! I just didn’t expect you to figure it out so fast…”

Roxy gave him an unimpressed look, “You never hang out with us, you never speak to us unless you need something or run into us on your patrols, and you’ve very clearly expressed how none of us are your friends except for Sun. I would be more surprised if you didn’t like Sun.”

Moon groaned, “God, I’m hopeless.”

“I don’t know about that,” Roxy rolled her eyes. “I can always ask Sun next time I run into him. I would not be surprised if he loved you back.”

“No, don’t do that, I want to be the one to tell him.”

Roxy gave Moon a “Really?” look. “Well, let me know if you ever get to it.”

If love is just a chemical reaction, is there a pill to take? Something to quell this ache?

Is this the real thing or a distraction? Is it worth the risk? My life would dеtonate.

Sun? Moon asked in their headspace once all the children had left.

“Yes, Moonie?” Sun replied. He always tended to speak out loud when no one was around.

What do you think of me? A pause, then, What am I to you?

“Oh,” Sun muttered, already cleaning up the barrels. “Well, I like you! We work well together and you’re always there for me when I’m sad!”

Silence. “Moon?”

The weeks blur together. I watch the ceiling buckle, I wonder when it's caving in?

There's a black hole in the living room floor, I keep standing on the edge and looking in..

Am I a friend to you, Sun? Moon asked after a moment.

And on the other side is another life. A version of me with a spark in their eyes that I don't have

And now they’re laughing, and it's killing me that I cannot see what's making them laugh from where I'm standing. And I have to know, so I'm going in!

Sun seems to deflate at the question. “If that's what you want us to be!”

Us?

Let's try this again.

Sun, do you like me as a friend?

I'm on my way to your house, guided by the stars. I'm pulling in the driveway, I'm turning off the car.

I'm running to your porch, I'm sprinting up the stairs. The door swings open, and you're standing there.

“Welllll,” Sun drags out the word, obviously stalling. “Not exactly.”

You're beaming down at me, you're reaching out for me. You pull me in your arms, and I feel your heart pounding.

I take a step back to catch my breath.

I love you, Moon blurts suddenly. Their code practically cringes away as they feel Sun stiffen.

“Y-you do?” Sun asks, sounding almost close to tears.

Yeah, I’d understand if you don’t-

“Are you kidding me?!” Sun shrieked. “I love you so much, Moonie. You have no idea how long I’ve wished you’d say those words! Oh, Moonie.”

Moon felt Sun’s code against theirs, and they leaned into it, I love you, then.

Sun grinned as he replied through their link, I love you too!
