“No.” Aether squinted at him, and Xiao knew there was no way he was getting away with it. “Talk to me. What is it?”
“It’s nothing, I swear —”
“It’s something. Your entire mood changed.” Aether sighed. “You can’t keep doing this, Xiao. We’ve had this conversation before.”
“I know, I just —” I can’t say it. I can’t.
“Xiao,” Aether coaxed.
A particularly cold gust of wind blew by, making Xiao shudder.
“Aether.” He took in a shaky breath. Suddenly, it felt like the entire world around them had come to a halt.
“What happens to us . . . when you leave?”

And, I was about to do it; to go ahead with the task, steady hands and uncertain mind; to drink away these sinful thoughts by the pain of splitting my mind in two. Until the steady beat of a knock came on my door, and Poole called from outside, “Sir, Mr.Utterson wishes to see you.”
Here I halt, a deer in headlights, phial still warm in my hands and salts poised at creating a new type of poison. I swallow my resolve on this trial, return my things as they were to my desk, phial sealed, and steal a breath. It does not occur to me, at this moment, to question nor wonder what brought my friend at such an inappropriate time here, to me, in the early hours of late night. So, all I do is right myself, order my notes and allow him in.
