Chapter 1: caffeine

Chapter Text

Saparata.

Saps.

A Junior at Pandora University.

Majoring in Architecture with a minor in art. And works at the coffee shop. They have two siblings: Zynn and Snowbird.

Zynn was tall and intimidating, but at the end of the day she was still his little sister, so Saps knew she was practically harmless. She was a sophomore this year, and had finally decided on a major: criminology with a minor in psychology. Unsurprisingly, as Zynn had always been interested in dealing with criminals and understanding their minds, she decided to also get an internship at the local police station and was already doing wonderfully, Saps was very proud. However, unlike Saps, Zynn had decided to go to Pandora's rival university, Yggdrasil University.

Yggdrasil University was literally down the street from Pandora University, making them extreme rivals. Whoever’s bright idea to put these two universities borderline next to each other had another thing coming, because Ish it was annoying dealing with people. Especially when people like Schpood, the star football player on the Yggdrasil football team, made it everyone’s problem if they lost a game.

As for Snowbird, Saps’ baby brother, he was entering his Freshman year at Pandora University and was wanting to do business management with a minor in economics, but Saps knows first hand how easy it is to change your mind. Snowbird looked more similar to Saps’ than Zynn did, but that was just how it ended up being. While Saps’ was more of an albino than anything, Snowbird was just pale, with slightly more color to his being.

Overall, they love their siblings to death.

Saps was what they would consider a lucky individual. They had a good job with good friends and equally good co-workers (those two things were pretty much intertwined).

One of their best friends, Fluxion, had grown up with them. Fluxion was a pretty uptight individual but he was a good friend nonetheless. Or, he used to be. He had longish black hair that he usually kept down, and had convinced Saps to help dye some strands of it purple if only to make him look different than his older sister and father. Saps was never able to say no to their friend- so they did. He was a sophomore, unlike Saps, but was a double major in pre-law and chemistry. Saps was a year older than Flux, which might have been part of the reason Flux was so entranced by Saps at first, but whatever. Flux also attended Pandora University, and Saps knew Flux was smart- but damn; they also knew it was partly due to the stress his father put over him. Flux also found time to work at the coffee shop, but it was mostly part-time due to the fact he had recently gotten an internship at a chemistry lab (he was super excited about it). And because the coffee shop was owned by a person who understood they were in a college town, Flux was able to keep everything balanced. Sometimes employees would put internships over their part-time job- and frankly Saps respected that. Both the fact the owner was chill, and the fact that  Saps, however, pretty much had a job lined up as soon as they graduated, but no one knew, and Saps planned to keep it that way.

“Saps, don’t daydream on me now!” called one of their co-workers and friends, named 5pyder. He was also a double major, but in english and history, and when Saps tells you he is obnoxious about it sometimes- trust them when they say they mean it. 5pyder was a fun individual, a junior who had decided to get some extra cash their second to last year of uni; they attended Yggdrasil University, which is why Saps knew for a fact they were not the animals Flux sometimes liked to describe them as. Frankly Saps doesn't get what Flux is talking about half the time... In fact, 5pyder was one of Saps’ best friends; “Can you handle the cashier for a bit? Cass just went on her break.”

“Hm, sure?” Saps nodded, grabbing their badge from where they had put it down on the table during their own break. They opened the door to the rest of the coffee shop and were pleasantly surprised to see it hadn’t been packed full just yet. Saps had just finished putting their apron back on when they looked up and saw who was possibly the most handsome man he had ever seen.

The man was tall, much taller than Saps, which was quite a surprise as Saps was taller than most people their age. He had the darkest brown eyes that Saps’ had ever seen, and they seemed to glitter with something akin to curiosity. His hair was a black, and was shaved on the lower part of his head, while the top part of his hair was nothing but thick strings of brown. Ish, he’s fine… Stuttering a bit, they managed to get out- which was not without an extraordinary amount of effort, “H-hello! Welcome to Pandora’s Box!”

And yes, Saps is aware of how pretentious the name is. But, they’re just a lowly college student, please leave them alone. Saps had wondered if perhaps “Pandora’s Box” was somehow endorsed by Pandora University- but despite this, people from Yggdrasil University came, that’s how Saps knew it was never that serious.

The man nodded, and Saps couldn’t help but wonder if he was a college student. He wore pretty basic clothes, different from the usual dramatics of the rest of their friends got up to. There was something captivating about it. For even 5pyder outside of work liked to wear a nice shirt and pants during daily activities. It was particularly amusing when they visited 5pyder’s older sister, Jophiel, at her Flower Shop. 5pyder had two sisters, Jophiel and Cass, who went to Pandora University. Cass worked at Pandora's Box, while Jophiel worked at the local flower shop as well as an RA around campus.

Saps knew they were harder to identify what they “were”- which is good, that’s how they liked it- but the man seemed to be looking just as diligently at Saps as they were him. Saps wondered if it was pure curiosity or if there was a hint of attraction there as well. I hope there is some of the second... There was something oddly enchanting about how simply the other was dressed- and yet, it still gave Saps’ so much to see. He clearly- nope, cannot do this on the job.

“What can I help you with today, sir?” Saps smiled brightly, and Saps couldn’t help the way their voice was a little breathless- they never were good with pretty men, after all. Saps had been told their smile was to die for- and dammit if they weren’t going to try and use their best attribute to get the attention of a cute guy. “Sir?”

“Hm?” and Saps’ nearly melted at how deep the other’s voice was- damn, and was a little entranced by the way the other seemed to just look at Saps in waiting, as if they were going to ask something else, “Just a black coffee, thanks.”

Unsurprising, mused Saps as they nodded, and began inputting the order into the screen so the man could pay and (unfortunately) leave. Saps was sure the man had many, many other things to get on with besides sitting in and drinking coffee. Although it would be a shame when the man vanished, Saps hadn’t seen someone they’d even been remotely interested in for a long time. Saps turned to look back at the man, to take his card to pay. He handed it over willingly, and Saps grabbed the cup, asking, “Name, sir?”

“Turntapp.”

The name was simple, yet Saps couldn’t help but think it fit. Saps nodded, smiling again and turning their face down before the red blush could be accurately painted across their pale face. Saps finished writing his name on the cup and handed it to 5pyder with a shrug. Turntapp nodded, in something like thanks, before turning to go to the waiting area.

“Hello, Saps.”

Saps’ eyes widened when he realized Cynikka was standing in front of him. Fluxion’s terrifying older sister. If people thought Fluxion was a menace, they hadn’t met Cynikka yet. Unlike Fluxion, she left her hair black and kept it short, and had once told Saps she preferred the way it felt. She, like Fluxion, wore dramatic clothes that reminded them of something out of a history book. Cynikka was also a double major- but in political science as well as religion; anyone who knew Cynikka knew she wasn’t religious per say, but she did have an air of spirituality around her that most people tended not to question. Sure, has Saps allowed themself to get dragged off to some worship of the moon by her a few times? Yeah… but that’s not the point!

“Cyn! It’s been so long. How are you?”

They’re grateful when Cynikka’s eyes soften the slightest as she nods in recognition, “It has. Flux has been busy, and I assume you have been as well. How is school going?”

Saps perks up; Cynikka has always been one of their favorite “sibling-friends” if that makes sense, even if she was the same age as him, because she always asks how they’re doing, and it’s a nice feeling, “Good! My midterm project for my Architecture 400 class is as stressful as expected, but it’s coming along nicely. I need to run it by Flux to get a second opinion once I’m done, but it should come out wonderfully!”

Cynikka’s eyes twinkled, and her eyes were trained on theirs; Saps was always jealous by how easily Cynikka carried herself, making everyone aware of how chill, how competent she was; “I’d love to see it as well once you’re finished, Saps. You’ve always been a wonderful architect. I cannot wait to see where you go with it.”

Saps felt their chest flood with positive affirmation, and smiled again, “Thank you, Cyn! Now, what can I get for you?”

“Ah, yes,” Cynikka looked down at the menu and just shrugged, as if she had made up her mind before she’d even arrived, which frankly, Saps wouldn’t have been surprised,“I think I’ll do a double shot espresso, please. Thank you, Saps.”

“Sure thing, Cyn!” Saps smiled again as they began inputting the order, and then writing her name on a cup, “We’ll have it ready for you soon.”

“Thank you, Saps, have a wonderful rest of your day.”

If Saps had been paying better attention, maybe they’d have seen who she walked over to.

Saps went through the rest of the line easily, ensuring everyone was happy with their orders and wasn’t surprised when they got tipped. Maybe they should have been, but frankly, Saps had always been good with people; maybe not as good as people like Flux or that senior Schpood were, but they were good with people. The rest of their shift went by relatively quickly, and Saps couldn’t pretend to not be over the moon when their shift finally ended and they could shut down the cafe. Cass had gotten off a couple hours, waving 5pyder and Saps bye, before going over to Jophiel’s flower shop to see how their sister was doing.

“For Ish’s sake, it felt even more packed than usual, Saps! I mean who needs coffee at 8pm?” 5pyder’s voice is dripping with annoyance, and frankly, Saps was amused by the whole thing. He's not wrong, of course, who needs coffee this late? Then again, we are college students... 5pyder wasn’t one to withhold his exasperation with things, and it usually became Saps’ "problem". The two of them had become good friends when they started working at Pandora’s Box together last year, and had pretty much been attached at the hip since then. Especially with Flux’s distance beginning to grow, as much as they wanted to ignore it. So even though 5pyder attended another school, the two of them tried to spend as much time out of school together. They met up to study quite a bit and it was usually at the Yggdrasil Library, and Saps was frankly shocked no one tried to kick them out. 5pyder claimed it was fine, and told them not to worry too much. Saps reminded 5pyder they were a chronic worrier but sure, they’d just “stop”.

“Well, we are in a college town, Pyder,” Saps hummed affectionately as they finished wiping down the counters, and ensuring everything was in their place before they packed up for the night. Saps sometimes felt more amused than annoyed when it came to 5pyder. It was a typical feeling- but Saps was rarely truly annoyed, and wondered not for the first time if there was something that could annoy them.

“Ugh, don’t remind me. I have to meet with Owo for a project tomorrow- can you believe it?!”

“You’re the one who wanted to help him with his senior project. He asked because you’re a history major, remember?”

“Erm, I’m both a history and english-”

“Yes, but he chose you because you’re a history major.”

“Man, you’re such an ass sometimes, Saps. You're fooling no one.”

“Contrary,” Saps giggled, and was amused by their little bickering act, and appreciated that they knew the other wasn't angry, “I’m fooling everyone.”

Saps frowned as they looked at their phone with mild annoyance. Saps was happy for their siblings, really, but they were always going out. They were a little worried, but if Flux was there, Saps was sure everything would be fine. Snowbird had gotten along swimmingly with Flux’s other friends, Thomas (which, friendship is debatable- but not in the way you think), Seraphim, and frankly a few other people Saps forgot the name of. Saps wasn’t stupid- they knew Flux’s friends didn’t like them, so Saps didn’t hang around them much anymore. Flux didn’t seem to notice either way, (or maybe he didn't care) so Saps wasn’t sure why (or if ) it mattered all that much.

It didn’t bother Saps.

A loud knock on their dorm door cause them to startle. They got up from their bed and moved over to the door with annoyance all over their face. Their hair was pulled up into a bun, and there were a few white strands falling over their face as they opened the door. 5pyder was standing in front of the door with that stupid, annoying grin as he held up a bag of take out- oh nevermind, I’m so happy to see him, “Pyder?”

“I heard Flux is out with his new friends again,” and there’s a sad look on his face as he holds out the food like it’s an offering, “maybe we could hang out?”

Saps’ heart sings, “C’mon in, weirdo.”

For what it’s worth, Saps does have a good friend- and it’s 5pyder.

-

5pyder.

Pyder.

A junior at Yggdrasil University, a double major in history and english. A mega nerd, and good friends with a man named Owo- a cheerleader, but also a mega art nerd. They’d been friends since his freshman year when he showed him around the campus and answered any and all of his questions. He was sweet, kind, and well-liked. 5pyder was thankful for his friendship- it helped him get through his freshman year.

Hence why he agreed to this bullshit:

“5pyder you promised!”

“Which is why I’m still here, Owo,” 5pyder threw his hands up, exasperation all over his face as he looked down at the bullshit Owo had managed to drag him into this time, “but you’re ignoring my advice!”

“Nu uh!” he whined, and 5pyder was wondering how the hell he was a senior, and why the hell 5pyder was here helping him with his senior project. But he nodded, “Fine, fine, give it to me again.”

“Given how you’re double majoring in fashion and art, I think you should follow how fashion has changed specifically for women, given your unique interest in them,” he raised an eyebrow when he squawked in embarrassment, “I’d use both an essay as well as a visual representation. If this is an all-year project, I’d draw, paint- or whatever it is you art majors do- and just make it pretty. That’s the best way to mix history and your majors.”

Owo’s eyes sparkled in excitement, clapping his hands together in excitement, `“Oh my Ish! That’s so freaking cool,” and 5pyder smiled brightly, tilting his head down to hide his blush. Before you ask- not like that, he just wasn’t used to… compliments so genuinely. And Owo had always been sweeter than candy- but he was also capable of strength greater than anyone he knew. The two continued talking about the project and how Owo could really bring it to life. That was before a familiar presence appeared.

“There you are, Owo. Dammit boy, I’ve been lookin’ everywhere for you!”

“Huh? Oh Schpood! How fun! What can I do for you, silly? I told you I was gonna be busy during this time with my friend!”

Oh Ish, I am so gay. 5pyder’s eyes were wide as the Schpood walked over to their table with full confidence. He sauntered over like he owned the entire library, and Ish was it hot. His hair was slicked back, and was a dark brown that reminded him of some sort of bark color. His eyes were a similar brown and 5pyder found himself mesmerized. He was wearing a golden zipper jacket with a white tank top underneath. He was wearing sports-shorts that made 5pyder uncomfortably aware of how huge the man’s thighs were. Oh my-

“This is my friend 5pyder! He’s helping me with my senior project!” Owo’s voice was excited enough it brought 5pyder back from his thoughts. 5pyder blinked, and snapped his head up and made eye contact with Schpood, trying desperately to keep his cool, lest he lose himself in his thoughts again. He didn't want Schpood to think he was weird. Even if he definitely was.

“Cool! Nice to meet you, 5pyder. I’m Schpood, but I’m sure you’ve heard of me,” and it should be annoying, it should drive 5pyder up the wall, and he’s sure if it wasn’t someone who was exactly his type- then maybe 5pyder would be irritated by the overconfidence, the cockiness- but frankly? It was kinda hot. Saps is so gonna judge me when I tell him about this later.

“I’ve heard of you,” 5pyder nodded his head, keeping his face as blank as possible, and tried not to grin when the older man raised his eyebrows. He kept his voice painfully neutral, if a bit exasperated. Even if he did have the hots for the older man, he was not going to make it obvious; at least not yet, “You’re one of the best players on the football team, I don’t know why I wouldn’t have heard from you.”

Owo snorted, giggling into his hand, eyes sparkling with mirth at his friend, “Always with the dry humor, huh, Pyder?”

He rolled his eyes for what felt like the hundredth time and turned to Owo, “Whatever. Well, I got work. So, I’ll see you later? When do you wanna meet up again?”

“Aw, you're still working at the coffee shop?” Owo's excitement obvious from the way he sat up straighter, curiosity flowing off of him like a fountain.

“For the record, I like working there, Owo,” 5pyder rolled his eyes, standing and collecting his items, and dusting himself off to emphasize how long he felt like he'd be there, grinning when Owo made it obvious he got the joke, “Sides, Saps has started working there more, and Flux has been less so-”

“Woah! You know Saparata?” Schpood’s voice is excited and 5pyder can’t help but turn around to see it. Not even that angry the older man interrupted him, again something he might've smiled anyone else for. For Ish’s sake, how does Saps know all these people from Yggdrasil? I feel like they know everyone! Exasperation in their thoughts. It was pretty amusing how Saps seemed to know everyone from Yggdrasil, but seemed enamored with Turntapp. 5pyder had seen the man around, and knew he was Saps' type even before he started showing up to the cafe. 5pyder nodded his head, and turned back to hide the blush from the excessive attention Schpood seemed to be giving him, and was painfully avoiding Owo's eyes because 5pyder knew the asshole was giving him a look, “From Pandora’s Box right?”

5pyder closed his eyes for a moment, allowing himself to collect his feelings before turning to Schpood, “Yeah. We started working there at the same time. I’m sure you know Saps goes to Pandora, so we have a fun time exchanging gossip,” Saps is gonna kill me for letting that spill but dammit, and then finally packed all his stuff up and put the backpack strap over his shoulder. Good thing I packed my uniform so I can change when I get to work… “As fun as this was Owo, Schpood, I really gotta go. Bye.”

5pyder walked away quickly, trying to calm down the heat on his cheeks as he realized he’d just probably gotten himself into the most annoying experience of his life. Because as hot as Schpood may be, he was an idiot and possibility a little unhinged. But frankly, 5pyder had bigger things to worry about, like work.

-

“Yo, Pyder! There’s a customer out here asking for you,” Saps’ voice called from back and 5pyder groaned. He’s just gotten here and he’s already having to deal with creeps. It’s a pretty well known fact that if you work in customer service, there will sometimes be customers who get a little… too comfortable. No one had ever crossed too many boundaries yet, but- oh my fucking Ish, there is no way.

“5pyder!” the brunette was grinning widely, and a little manically if 5pyder was being honest. 5pyder felt a hot flush growing on his cheeks, because what the fuck was he doing here, the thoughts were moving a mile a minute, trying to keep his cool because he absolutely could not embarrass himself in front of Schpood, “I wanted some coffee.”

Please tell me Schpood did not ask for me- to Saps. He snapped his eyes over to Saps, who was smirking at him with amusement dancing in their black eyes. Fuck, I’m not getting out of this. Saps is so going to ask questions once Schpood leaves. Because like 5pyder mentioned previously, Saps was a massive gossip.

And frankly, one of 5pyder's best friends... actually, they might be their best friend.

“Thanks for getting 5pyder for me, Saps! Appreciate you, man!” Saps just hummed in amusement as they turned to walk over and work on online orders. Cass’ eyebrows were through the roof at 5pyder’s flustered reaction. He just glared at her and sighed. I can do this, I can survive dealing with this super hot customer who came here for me and then deal with my gossip co workers. I am strong and capable. “So, how long have you been working here, 5pyder?”

“A year,” 5pyder hummed, keeping his eyes trained on Schpood's face and not the exposed biceps that were now on display as Schpood had "lost his shirt", “What can I get you?”

“Oh, right, coffee,” Schpood looked down at the menu, he waved his hand like he'd forgotten he came here for coffee, and it was almost as if that wasn't the reason he was here, which was now sending 5pyder into a spiral, “What’s your favorite drink here?”

Oh Ish, he’s about to do the thing where he either gifts me a drink or pretends to like the drink I like. Why is he doing this?? What could this possibly mean? And I swear to Ish if Saps interrupts this for any reason...

“Um, I like mochas,” 5pyder shrugged, trying to keep his eyes trained on the screen, and avoid the pretty brown eyes that seemed to be taking over every waking thought now that Schpood had joined his orbit, “That has an expresso, chocolate, and steamed milk.”

“Cool, I’ll get two!” Schpood looked a little too pleased with himself, as if he were gloating in the fact that 5pyder had gifted him the knowledge of something he liked.

“Oh, you have someone you’re meeting, then?” 5pyder was going to make him do it, because dammit if he wasn’t going to drag this out. 5pyder glanced up from the screen as he asked, letting a little amusement into his eyes as he raised an eyebrow, placing his cheek onto the palm of his hand, because surely this didn't mean anything, “Hm?”

Schpood leaned over the counter, eyes twinkling as he looked down at 5pyder. 5pyder’s cheeks were now basically stained red, and he’d just managed to keep eye contact long enough for a grin to grow on the older man’s face. ABORT ABORT ABORT!!!!! “That’s going to be $4.59,” he whispered and looked away. The other hummed in amusement and handed him his card. Because why did I think I could out flirt someone who does this shit on the daily? The real question is, why me?  “Saps, two mochas please," 5pyder called over his shoulder before looking back at Schpood who looked even more self-satisfied than before, crazed amusement dancing in his eyes, "Iced or hot?”

He glanced back at Schpood who just shrugged, eyes still trained on him, before letting his lips spread into an even larger grin, “Whatever you like, pretty.”

Chapter 2: lore

[ Saps ]

“Wow, someone’s got an admirer,” Saps leaned over the counter once it came time for closing and 5pyder’s admirer finally left. Saps’ grin turned maniacal when 5pyder snapped a glare over at them, Ish, he makes it so easy! Not that Saps didn't know who that was, Schpood and Saps were good friends actually. Cynikka often made Saps come over when she had to deal with him, claiming he drove her mad, “Oh come on- don’t look at me like that Pyder! It was funny!”

“I do not need that heathen coming here and flirting with me on shift. He’s just like every other creep, I do not need to deal with-” and Saps might’ve taken it seriously if it were not for the lingering blush on the man’s cheeks, and the way his eyes are still lingering on the door where Schpood had left twenty minutes prior. 5pyder had never been good at expressing his feelings, which Saps could relate to on some level, but this was just insane. Good thing Schpood liked a chase, they guess. Especially given the fact Schpood had stayed literally until closing, working on something on his computer, while looking up hopefully to see if 5pyder was looking too (it was about a 50/50 chance, because 5pyder clearly had a crush on the older, and Saps was going to play matchmaker).

“If it was like any other man, you’d have looked disgusted. If I didn’t know any better, I’d even say maybe you’ve been hiding a crush from me! I could see the blush from the back. I bet he’ll be back tomorrow, too bad you’re off," Saps' grin was even wider as they looked over 5pyder's expression, which was true to Saps' prediction, becoming even more embarrassed, a flush basically overtaking his entire face. Saps' watched with amusement as 5pyder clearly tried to come up with a retort.

“Oh whatever- what about you! That guy keeps coming back and just sitting and you keep sneaking glances over where he was sitting your entire shift!” 5pyder turned to face them, and perhaps the expression on his face would be more intimidating if he wasn't blushing like a tomato.

Saps felt their own face blush bright red- because this was not supposed to be turned back to them, Saps avoided eye contact before shaking their head and exclaiming, and trying to keep their own blush off their pale face. Because yes, Turntapp had been showing up more and more, but this was not the same thing, Schpood was actually flirting! “Wait, this is so not about me! We’re talking about you- that guy- he’s- your guy is actually showing interest in you!”

“Oh come on- he is so not my guy,” 5pyder groaned and shook his head in annoyance, using finger quotations around “my guy”, his trade mark exasperation making a record comeback,  “Seriously, you’re- ugh. You need to get it out of your head that you’re ugly or something. Saps, you’re so deserving of love and-”

“And we’re so not doing this right now,” Saps laughed, shoving their friend away from them and turning on their heel to go count the cash and finish up the paperwork for the night. That way they found finally be able to go home- and oh wait. Saps definitely had homework they had to do. They glanced back at 5pyder for a moment- maybe if they stopped being an ass, Saps could convince 5pyder to go to the Yggdrasil library with them (it was better quality than Pandora’s, which Saps knew was bound to send Flux into a spiral if he ever visited.)

“Stop being a coward, Saps!” but 5pyder didn’t follow them, leaving Saps to their thoughts. Frankly, Saps was thankful for it. Sure, it had been a week since Turntapp had first started coming into Pandora’s Box. And it had been a week since Saps had started to eagerly wait for him to come in- and he did. It wasn’t outwardly flirty- not like with Schpood and 5pyder- which there was also that:

-

“Hello, my dear friend Saparata!”

Saps knew that voice. Schpood was a senior at Yggdrasil University- popular football star, and was a double major in international relations and political science. Despite his eccentricities, he was actually pretty smart and good with people. Saps was terrified because they knew he would make an excellent politician and Saps hated politics. But somehow, the two of them had become friends. This had happened two years ago when they met at a P-Y rival game. Saps had been convinced to go to a game after Davarit had begged him. They were both freshmen, and came from the same high school, Theria, and decided they were going to stick together. But then, Davarit had decided to go to Yggdrasil and Saps Pandora. They still made an effort to hang out, but they had begun distancing themselves. Whether they realized it or not, it was doomed to happen. High school friends rarely remain that way, especially when they go to opposite schools. This had been their last real hang out for a long, long time.

At some point, Saps had lost Davarit- and boy were they pissed at that fact- and had somehow gotten lost enough where there were football players about to run them over. Saps thought there were definitely worse ways to die, before Schpood had stopped people from running over Saps, and they’d gotten to talking and Schpood seemed amused with Saps at best- so the other didn’t complain. In fact, Schpood’s favorite activity was blowing up their phone with memes and tik toks- it was annoying

And frankly? They were still good friends to this day. Schpood was a year older than them, and Saps thought older people were fascinating- but what was more, was the fact Schpood was borderline psychotic! Zynn would have a field day with him, Saps had thought at the time. The two of them remained close, and their friendship was mostly online, but sometimes Schpood convinced Saps' to attend a game, and the two would go eat afterwards.

“Schpood, it’s been a while. What can I get you?” Saps is brought back to today, where their friend is grinning across the counter with a mischievous glint in his eyes. Uh oh. This is about to be so annoying, isn’t it? Saps just smiled back at the older with a sort of easy confidence. They were secretly glad Schpood was the only person in today, with the exception of Turntapp, who seemed to be typing away on an archaic-looking computer, and glanced up to see them talking every few seconds. Oh shit, I hope he doesn’t get the wrong idea! They couldn’t help but think in a panic. But then, Schpood finally told them his reason for visiting:

Actually,” Schpood’s voice tells Saps everything they need to know- they’re here for a person. Which can mean only one thing- someone had actually managed to catch Schpood’s attention. He’s a known eccentric idiot, who didn’t really care for romance, or really other people in general; he, of course, was really good at pretending he cared, but frankly, you could never tell if it was simply for political reasons or not- “I was wondering if a certain co-worker of yours is here.”

Saps raised a singular eyebrow, their black eyes narrowed on their friend; I’m about to see too much of Schpood now, they thought in exasperation. One thing about Schpood is when he wanted something, he was bound to get it. It wasn’t a question of “if” but “when”. “Oh? I didn’t know the great Schpood had an interest in someone? How intriguing. Do you have a name?”

“His name’s 5pyder, I think. He’s friends with Owo, and he’s super cute-”

Saps’ face is suddenly very serious, their eyes narrowed on Schpood before he can even finish the thought. 5pyder and Saps had become very good friends over the past year, and frankly, there is very little Saps wouldn’t do for their friend, protective anger coursing through their veins as they crossed their arms across their body. Saps' wasn't nearly as built as the older, but Saps' was smart, and that counted for something, “If you hurt him, I’ll-”

“I have no plans to do that,” and Saps almost thought the other sounded sincere.

Saps’ eyes remained narrowed. But Schpood was nothing if not honest. Then, in their most neutral voice possible; Schpood wasn't one to lie, it was his best quality. Saps tried to keep their anger to a minimum as they called out for their friend, “Yo, Pyder! There’s a customer out here asking for you!”

Schpood’s eyes glistened in thanks. And the realization on the other’s face made Saps realize it wasn’t that big of a deal… maybe?

Hopefully?

-

“Please tell me you are not that dense, Pyder. The man was basically begging for your number!”

“Shut up, Saps! Unlike your boytoy, this is the first day he showed up. If he’s actually interested,” 5pyder rolled his eyes, but Saps can clearly tell there’s a tenseness in his shoulders that indicates to Saps the other actually cares, that he is actually hoping the other will show up again- aw! How precious! Wait, this is actually super cute, maybe I should wingman... “he’ll keep showing up.”

“Oh bite me,” Saps huffed, finally hanging up their apron, humor in their voice as they puttered around, finishing up closing details so the two of them could actually go home for the night, “So, should we run to the library?” They grinned brightly, holding up their satchel. It had been about a week since Saps had visited the Yggdrasil library- mostly due to work and applications to Grad School- so they thought now was as good as any to actually study for their upcoming calc class. They had been going to tutoring with Zero, but frankly, it was not enough- they needed to actually do outside studying if they were going to do well on their next quiz. And Saps knew for a fact Pyder always had plenty to study for.

“Oh sure,” and Pyder’s eyes glimmered, like there was something he wasn’t sharing. Normally, Saps might’ve tried to get it out of them, but frankly? They were too tired to deal with 5pyder's bullshit. They were both dealing with an infinite amount of stress- and with the new addition to the equation that is a love life- they were now exhausted 24/7. 5pyder was right to be fair, Turntapp had been showing up more frequently, and longer than Schpood. But, if there was one thing Saps had garnered from their conversation, it was that Schpood had met the other earlier that day and had come to visit 5pyder at work that same day. Again, Schpood was a little shit, but he was honest.

The two of them packed up their stuff and made their way to Pyder’s flat, where he would pick up study materials and tell his flatmates they were gonna be gone for a couple more hours and to not worry. The walk went by quickly, with Pyder yapping about how annoying his “newest creep” was. Saps wasn’t one to downplay if someone was actually uncomfortable, of course, but Saps could tell this was different. Saps could see it on the bright blush that seemed ever-present on their friend’s face whenever Schpood was there and was texting when he wasn’t staring rather blatantly at Pyder. Now, Saps would’ve said something if it wasn’t so painfully obvious the other was enraptured with Schpood. Saps was kinda amused; but it made sense, if you thought about it, someone with as dry humor as 5pyder needed to be with someone as charismatic as Schpood. Saps was excited they were getting front row seats to the entire thing.

Pyder leaned forward, scanning the two of them into the library. The two walked in, voices dropping down to a whisper.

“C’mon-”

That’s when Saps sees him. He’s standing by one of the bookshelves, helping another student. He’s wearing black pants with a white undershirt. His brownish green trenchcoat that seems to be a staple of Turntapp is also around his wide shoulders. I guess, technically, I’m not on the job- I can actually look, hehe. His brown eyes are trained on whoever he’s talking to, and his hair is as messy as they’ve ever seen it. His facial expression is cold, and his voice low as he’s describing how to properly take care of the book- and oh my fucking Ish that’s fucking Zynn-

“Woah! Saps! What are you doing here?” and of course Zynn basically yells in the way you do when you’re still whispering but still obnoxiously loud, making Turntapp snap his head over to where Saps is standing awkwardly next to 5pyder- who they are sure is wearing a shit-eating grin. “5pyder too? Oh that’s why. Hey guys- oh Turntapp! This is my older sibling, Saps, and their friend 5pyder! Saps goes to Pandora-”

“W-we’ve met,” Saps laughed a little, waving their hand in embarrassment as Turntapp’s ever-serious eyes are now trained on them again- and oh isn’t it a wonderful feeling to have his eyes on them again? But unlike when they were trained on Zynn, his eyes have almost… softened? If that makes sense? It sends a buzz down Saps’ spine as they try very hard to keep normal, maintainable eye-contact; they could not be seen lacking in front of their little sister, especially because it seemed that the two of them were friends, “Turntapp is a regular at Pandora’s Box.”

“Oh, is he now?” Zynn turned to look at Turntapp curiously, eyes glimmering curiously before shrugging; thank Ish she hasn’t picked up on Saps’ nervousness, because frankly, they do not know if Zynn could keep a secret to keep her life; but what was interesting was the teasing tone of his sister, when referring to the mysterious man in front of them, “Huh, I didn’t take you for a coffee lover, Turntapp!”

“I enjoy the coffee,” Turntapp’s eyes do not waver from Saps’ eyes and they have a feeling he is very much not talking about coffee. It sends yet another jolt down their spine and something settles in their stomach- warm and honey-like. And is slightly thankful Zynn is as dense as she is at this age. Because the way Turntapp said coffee has Saps beginning to spiral,  “Saparata does a wonderful job.”

“Ooh! That’s the most I’ve ever heard you praise someone, Turntapp! Wow! What do you even do at that Pandora’s Box, Saps?” This comment makes Saps’ cheeks flush a soft pink as they shrug in response. Their eyes now looking anywhere but the gentle giant in front of them, instead turning their eyes to their sister.

Saps finally finds it in themself to reply to their sister, and wondering how they had never actually explained what they did at their job, “I’m both a cashier and someone who makes the drinks, Zynn. Which you would know, if you ever listened,” they snap their eyes back to Turntapp, and raises an eyebrow curiously, but is a little protective. It turns out Turntapp must also go to Yggdrasil, but he looks about their age- and oh what a shame it would be if Turntapp liked their sister and not them- “I didn’t know you knew my sister.”

Turntapp stiffened; it’s slight, miniscule, so small that if you weren’t paying attention, you’d miss it. Saps doesn’t miss it. The dread that had been building up in their chest intensifies before-

“Oh, that’s because he’s like my mentor, Saps! We have these like older people who hang around to help us with stuff. Tapp is my mentor!”

It is such a small world, for Ish’s sake this is insane. And the relief that follows the initial surprise is deafening in his head. Thank Ish I wasn’t imagining the tension this last week, I might be, but at least he’s not- “Oh, how interesting. And you’re friends?”

“Oh yeah. We hang out with his friends a lot, they let me tag along! There’s also that guy you knew from high school- Davarit?”

And suddenly Saps is fifteen years old again; Davarit and Saps had nearly gotten involved in something they definitely shouldn’t have. It was only thanks to Davarit’s older brother, Zombta, that they didn’t. I should thank Zombta again… “Interesting, small world we live in,” Saps hummed in their ever-present amusement before glancing at 5pyder, who raised his eyebrows in question; which, Saps is going to have a stern talking to about telling Saps things that matter, “Well, we have some work to get to. Zynn, text the group chat when you’re home please. And, uh, Turntapp, I’ll see you later, I guess?”

It’s so painfully awkward, and they can feel both Zynn and 5pyder’s eyes on them as they grab 5pyder’s hand to drag him off while waving to Turntapp. Saps doesn’t even wait for his response before they’ve dragged their friend into the corner, away from the searching eyes that are Turntapp’s.

Ish, that was stressful.

[ 5pyder ]

Watching Saps plunder around his little sister and his “not” crush was immensely pleasing, and 5pyder was even more elastic at the idea he had come along to the library even though he hadn’t really wanted to. But that’s the thing about history- you can’t ever really stop studying. Saps had spent the last ten minutes bumbling through a conversation with Turntapp, who apparently went to Yggdrasil University, and was the mentor of Saps’ little sister. Curious, that’s… I wonder if that’s-

“Not a word, Pyder, not a word,” Saps’ voice is hoarse, like they’re fighting back the urge to jump off the second story balcony, and frankly Pyder was inclined to agree. If he had run into- and of course, it’s almost as if someone is writing my idea of hell into reality.

“Woah! Saps and,” the man’s voice drops an octave, and dammit it’s attractive, but there's clearly an air of excitement as well that has 5pyder wanting to crawl into a hole and die, “5pyder!”

Saps nodded at Schpood like they’ve known each other for years- and frankly, 5pyder is dying to know how they became friends, before turning to raise an eyebrow at him; then, as if sarcasm was a second language to his friend, “Schpood. I didn’t know you knew what a library was.”

Schpood laughed and predictably it’s loud and reckless and beautiful. 5pyder is entranced as Schpood begun a little bickering session with Saps, who just shrugged when Schpood tries to push their buttons. It is rather hard to get Saps miffed at someone. Saps and Schpood chat for a couple minutes and 5pyder can’t help but look over at their table longingly- I have papers to read about the fall of Infernus, I do not have time for this.

“As good as it is to see you, Schpood,” Saps’ voice is dripping with sarcasm; it makes 5pyder hesitate- Saps never sounds like that around anyone but maybe that’s just Schpood, he brings out a different side of people, and rolled their eyes so smoothly it was as if Saps had been long comfortable with the man in front of them, “we’ve got work to get to-”

“Oh right,” Schpood’s head swivels back to 5pyder and his attention is all on him again, and 5pyder wouldn't mind if that was how he spent the rest of his life, adored in Schpood's attention, “Don’t think I forgot about you,” his grin is wide and as crazy as last time and 5pyder can’t help the red blush on his cheeks; but, beneath the flirting and the wildness of it, there's a careful flirtation that reminds 5pyder of a romcom, “How was closing?”

“Fine?” 5pyder raised an eyebrow, and matches Saps' energy, “What are you doing in the library, Schpood?”

“You remember my name!” he grinned, like that was the best part of his day, and 5pyder resisted the urge to snort- Saps, on the other hand, did not. “Oi, what’s so funny, Saparata?!”

The other puts their hands up in defense, amusement glistening in their eyes. I suppose this is what I deserve for not telling Saps about Turntapp going to Yggdrasil, “Nothing. I’m going to sit down. Come join me when your boyfriend finally leaves you alone,” Saps sing-songs and 5pyder’s eyes widen and then he moves to follow Saps, but Schpood stops him.

“Not my boyfriend!” 5pyder calls after Saps, who just shrugs and flips him off. They sit down at their table, bringing out their laptop- fucker, 5pyder can't help but think, before sighed and turning back to Schpood, “What can I do for you, Schpood?”

“So about that number-”

And 5pyder was suddenly at the table, wearing a searing blush and ignoring Schpood’s insistent pestering.

-

“Wow, you are totally obvious, 5pyder,” Saps’ grin was obnoxious, but he supposes it’s what he deserves for teasing them about Turntapp, “Seriously, I didn’t think it was humanly possible to get that red.”

“Oh bite me,” 5pyder snapped, looking up from his reading on Infernus’ ruling system- about a Queen who loved the volcano more than anything, about how her people followed her into the void, and about how she’d nearly had it all. His assignment was going to be deconstructing her motives and how she worked to bring peace for her Kingdom and the Volcano, but not much else. Frankly, 5pyder had enjoyed the last unit more- the story of an Empire called Westhelm, ruled by an eccentric emperor with a spider-like second-in-command who was so devoted people forgot he was loyal to more than just the Emperor himself. Then, the second-in-command had died, sacrificing himself for Westhelm (for the Emperor) and it was said the Emperor mourned the spider-hybrid for the rest of his mortal life. 5pyder thought it was awfully romantic, which it can be a hit or a miss within the history books of Ish’s worlds. Romance could be beautiful- like the unlikely romance between a woman named Madzvie and literally fucking Oppenheimer. Don’t ask 5pyder, he doesn’t know.

But 5pyder’s second favorite “story” was about a creature of nothingness and everything all at once. About how they had been accused of something they hadn’t done, about how they had been betrayed by their best friend, about how they hadn’t wanted anything to do with civilization and politics- and yet they had become the center piece for it all. About how they ran away from their home, to the other island- home of Infernus, Westhelm- and The Covenant who took them in. About how the creature fell in love with the mortal dictator of the civilization, who protected them even after the diamonds ran out. About how they mourned when their mortal died to a stagmite. About the murder weapon. About how they never moved on.

5pyder thinks there will always be tragedy within the tomes of history, but there is beauty in the way they allowed themselves to be loved again even after their friend’s betrayal. 5pyder respects it- thinks it’s fascinating, thinks it’s lovely. But doesn’t know if he could ever do that himself, perhaps that’s the difference between the far-away distant hero of the past and himself. But who knows?

As for now, 5pyder was reading about the messy relationship between the Queen and her alleged ally. He reads about the betrayal, about how the Queen had sent the Covenant after the Mafia. About how the Mafia had been destroyed. Eradicated like they were nothing. It was terrifying to think people like that used to exist. He reads about how the Covenant brought her his head- and how when she had been held accountable- she burned his head in the very volcano they used to share. 5pyder loved history- and this was why. It was fascinating. He read how the traitorous best friend of the “hero” had run to Infernus- and how they all fell. Frankly, it felt like a movie more than a history textbook- whoever wrote this knew what they were doing.

“You seem super into that textbook, Pyder. You sure it's required reading?” Saps' tone is affectionate, and 5pyder, not for the first time, is grateful for their friendship.

“You’re just mad you have to do math for your degree,” 5pyder snapped, keeping his eyes on the line he was interrupted on; he looked up to see Saps' staring at the book like it was a fantasy novel. There was something to be said for that; in ancient times, mortals were hybrids with other creatures- spiders, and goats, but there were also creatures, inhuman and reminiscent of the old gods. But then in recent history, those hybrids died out, and with it, the human race returned to what it is today, “It is a fascinating story.”

“Oh, is that about Infernus? I love the Queen- she just wanted to protect her Volcano," Saps sighed with a sense of longing, like they wanted to know more about the volcano a woman had lived for, that she died for.

“I mean, sure, but also Yggdrasil was suffering; they should have worked together,” 5pyder was under no delusions. He knows their Universities were named after the islands of old, and in a world where you can build off of previously built items, the world had been expanded to have the world they had now- a world with cities, coffee shops, history and culture deep and rich. The two universities sat in the middle of the two original islands. The central island had been completely man-made after Ish had vanished.

Legends say that their god, a trickster god named Ish, used to float around the islands, allowing others to see him- ask him questions. It’s why people knew about the details of this history- Ish had been the one to gift things like recipes and paper, allowing for the stories to be passed down. Then, of course, there was the Elysium Mooshroom cow that just wouldn’t die. On Yggdrasil’s actual island, there was a country called Elysium- which was typically known for peace- and they had once been given a Mooshroom cow a long, long time ago. It seemed immortal- despite all odds, and was stated to live inside the leader’s home, and was protected- seen as divine even. It was the last remnant of Ish’s existence after all.

If 5pyder didn’t know for certain the mooshroom cow, at least by natural causes, was immortal, he’d have been more skeptical of the idea of Ish- but the Mooshroom was a very compelling argument.

“Ok, lore.”

“Did I just read all of that to you?”

“Yup!”

Chapter Text

[ Saps ]

Saps knew that this was the most amusing thing they had seen in a while.

Remember when they had said Cynikka was the epitome of put together? Well, all that seemed to vanish when she got put into a room with Lingulini. A man who so consistently wore a Mario cosplay people just accepted he was Mario, especially since no one really knew what he actually sounded like; and it apparently drove Cynikka insane.

“Lingulini, you’re an absolute ass,” she growled, standing in front of a shorter man, his lips spread into a wild, grin that made Saps’ very aware of the fact he was ragebaiting her, and he was enjoying it, “I told you to finish your part of the project, I cannot believe the professor let you into a 300 level class when you’re a business and econ major!”

“You’re just mad I’m adding better ideas than you, mamma mia!” and by the high pitched tone of his voice, he was not giving this bit up anytime soon. Saps hummed from behind, crossing their arms over their chest as they watched the interaction go down.

“And would you stop with that Ish awful accent! We all know that isn’t your real voice, my Ish!” Her voice came out high pitched herself, anger filling her entire form, and from what he could tell from watching from behind her, she wasn’t going to let this go.

“How do you know what my voice sounds like? Maybe they based Mario off of me!” Lingulini has his hands on his hip, and Saps has to bite back another laugh, because if there was a man who was known for his sass, it was this man right here, “Seriously Cyn, so mean to little ol’ me.”

“I swear to Ish, you have to be-” she cuts herself off, standing to her full height, her heels giving her half a foot over Lingulini, who is looking at her not with fear but- oh they are so hate-flirting. They’d never get together, but they’d so keep this up forever, Saps actually bites their lip. Because seeing people hate-flirt was even funnier than watching Schpood and 5pyder’s interactions, “Lingulini, get your damn side of the project done or you will regret it.”

“Oh, will I, Cyn?” His voice was full of amusement, the italian accent sticking even though Saps wasn’t even sure he was italian.

“Don’t call me that,” she hissed, before looking over her shoulder and finally seeing Saps; she paled, as if this entire interaction wasn’t meant to be seen. Saps would bet a lot of money they were right in that guess, “I will see you later, Lingu, behave.”

He puts his hands up in surrender, eyes twinkling under the guise of amusement, his (fake) mustache holding on by a thread. “Sure thing, Cyn.”

She scowled, and stomped off in Saps’ directions. Saps grins widely, tucking their hands into their pockets; they’re wearing white sweatpants that they got online, and an equally comfortable black hoodie that contrasted nicely against the white of their pants. Cynikka, of course, is wearing what could be considered regal in another life. She was wearing a black, skin tight shirt with a black blazer over it. Her brown skirt went down to her upper thighs, and contrasted nicely with her black boots that had at least an inch heel on them. There was a golden locket that made them wonder what was inside. Was it Flux? Her friends? She was intimidating, and if Saps didn’t know her as well as they did, they’d have ran away.

It made them wonder how Lingulini seemed to be okay with pressing her buttons. And why Cynikka almost seemed to… let him get away with it.

“Saps, what can I do for you? What are you doing here at Yggdrasil University?” her voice was poised, cold even compared to the fire she had when arguing with Lingulini. Saps glanced over her shoulder to see Lingulini standing next to a taller man with blondish brown hair and wore a white dress with golden adornments that reminded them of Ancient Greece. But what was really interesting was the way Lingulini kept looking over at Cynikka and themself. “Saps?”

“Oh nothin’, just lookin’ for 5pyder,” Saps turned their eyes back to Cynikka with a smile, trying to keep their voice flat, as they were also looking forward to seeing Turntapp, if he was on duty, “Figured he’d be in the library cause that’s where we usually meet. Uh, is Lingulini bothering you?”

She straightened her back, eyes wide, as if she hadn’t expected them to comment about it, then- then a tiny flush appeared under the cheek bones, if you blinked it wouldn’t be there; and Saps knew they were right again, “Ah, him. Don’t mind that menace, he likes to get under my skin. As for 5pyder, I saw him in one of the study rooms. He was asking for you I believe.”

“Great, thanks Cyn. I’ll be seeing you?”

She frowned, “Yeah, Saps…?”

“Hm?”

“About Flux…”

It was Saps’ turn to flinch. They looked behind them, making eye contact with her, and saw the pure worry in her eyes; they laughed, free of humor, before starting to back away from her, as if running from the conversation would fix their problems, “I… Flux has new friends. I hope he’s happy.”

“Saps,” her voice gentler than she’d ever deemed needed for them, and for some reason it made them feel like a caged animal, like they were nothing but, “If you ever need me, tell me. You’re still my friend, okay?”

“‘Course, Cyn. We’re friends. I’ll see you later,” Saps hummed, turning on their heel and dipping towards the room Cynikka had pointed them to. They walked with purpose, eagerly trying to get away from the uncomfortable realization that maybe- maybe the falling out was more obvious than Saps’ even realized.

Caught in their thoughts, they were caught off guard when they bumped into someone; “Oof!” Saps fell backward a little, but felt hands on their shoulders, steadying them with the awkward confidence of someone who helps. “I am so sorry!” They gasp, looking up and are even more embarrassed when they realize it’s Turntapp.

“Ah, Saparata, I did not know you frequented the Yggdrasail Library as much as it seems you do,” his voice is a lovely rumble that made something inside Saps tingle. “Although, I assume it is not to see me?”

Saps laughed awkwardly, not stepping outside the other’s space, eyes glistening in excitement, but the nerves in their stomach fluttering more than they should be. They tried to be confident, flirty even, but it came out shyly, “Well, technically I’m here to see Pyder, but I’m never against seeing you, Tapp.”

Turntapp hummed, amusement in his eyes as he continued to linger in their space. Saps couldn’t find it in themself to care as they continued looking up, resisting the urge to thread their fingers through those dark curls they’d gotten used to over the few weeks the two of them had spent around each other. Turntapp had frequented Pandora’s Box more and more often, getting a coffee and then lingering longer than socially acceptable. Saps would linger by his table, chatting with the man with easy confidence and a kindness that made people stare. As if they were interrupting the two of their time, and Saps couldn’t help but agree. They were interrupting. Then, Saps began frequenting the library even more after they found out Turntapp worked here part-time. They even traded numbers, and texted frequently. But nothing had happened beyond that, but oh how Saps wanted. “Well, don’t let me interrupt your time with your friend.”

“Ugh, I’d let you interrupt my time with-”

“Oh, the hell you are,” Pyder’s voice interrupted, causing Saps’ to jump back from where they’d basically been cuddled up against Turntapp in one of the library’s corners, black eyes snapping to 5pyder before they could even contemplate what he said,“There you are.”

Saps turned around to see Pyder standing at the edge of the corner the two of them had vanished into at some point. The blonde was glaring affectionately at the two of them. He was wearing a very familiar red hoodie and a pair of black sweatpants. His hands were on his hips with the kinda annoyance that reminded Saps of their parents.

“Heyyy,” Saps grinned, turning to face the other with a sheepish smile on their lips, feeling Turntapp remaining at their back, waving at their friend, embarrassment painting their face, “watcha doin’?”

“Don’t watcha doin’ me you ass, you were about to abandon me for a glorified situationship!” Pyder snapped, eyebrows raised and was clearly teasing.

Saps’ cheeks flared, “We’re not- what are you even talking about?”

Turntapp hummed from behind them, leaning down to whisper in their ear, “We’re in a situationship? Why wasn’t I informed? There are many other things I’d have been-”

“Eep!” Saps turned around, placing their hands onto the other’s mouth, and their cheeks flushed even deeper when Turntapp’s eyes were trained on their cheeks, clear satisfaction in his eyes as he watched them. “I-I’ll see you later, Tapp.”

Turntapp carefully removed their hands from his lips, and pressed a kiss to the back of their hand with a grin that would only be described as shit-eating. And Saps couldn’t help but think, I expect this shit out of Schpood- but not Turntapp! Or maybe this is who he’s like at his core and I’m getting to know this gentle giant… “Text me when you’re free.”

“I guess,” Saps sighed, looking to the side to avoid the eye contact Turntapp was a little too good at; the way the other sometimes looked at Saps had them hot and bothered to the point of no return,“Yeah, I’ll see you later, Tapp.”

“Bye, Saps,” his voice like velvet, as Saps just barely managed to pull their hands away from his, as they followed their friend away into the study room.

-

[ 5pyder ]

“So when are you guys gonna kiss?” was the first thing 5pyder thought to ask, because frankly, from what Saps had told him, they really were just flirty friends. Apparently they texted a lot, were always hanging around each other, but nothing beyond that had happened. 5pyder thought it was amusing nonetheless. Saps had never been one to indulge in romance as long as he’d known them. But they just seemed so entranced. It was nice to get to see Saps so happy, even if they were disgusting to watch.

“Like you and Schpood are any better, that hoodie couldn’t be anymore obvious you fuck,” Saps snapped from where they had finally sat down, pulling out their computer with a glare that could heat a thousand generators, “Speaking of, how’s that going?”

5pyder’s face flared, but considering Saps was his best friend, he just sighed in defeat. “He’s still hanging around. It’s… weird, I guess. He’s such a big name around here that I guess it doesn’t even feel real sometimes,” 5pyder sighed, placing their cheek in the palm of their hand with an exasperated sigh, “Like, he shows up to my dorm to study with me, and granted gets off topic alot, but will bring me take out from my favorite place I mentioned once.”

“Oh ho ho,” Saps smiled, “That’s a new one. The Schpood I’ve always known has never acted like that.”

“Ish, I can’t believe you’ve been friends with him as long as you have!” 5pyder sat up, “But I guess it was also a surprise that Zynn and Turntapp are friends.”

“Ish, don’t remind me,” Saps groaned loudly, “Zynn keeps asking about it when we have dinners with us and Snow. Which, ugh, Flux said he needs to talk to me.”

“Oh great, I’m sure that’s gonna go well,” 5pyder bit into an apple he’d brought with him, “whatever could that maniac want?”

“Hey, he’s still my friend,” Saps frowned, and 5pyder frowned in turn. That man is not your friend. He has done nothing but use you for his own gain, but sure, whatever. “He’s just… complicated. There’s a reason he chose Pandora and not Yggdrasil."

“I’m more than aware of what he thinks of us, Saps, just because you seem to get along with more Yggdrasail Uni students than most doesn’t mean I’m not aware of it,” 5pyder glowers at them, and Saps flinches back. 5pyder feels guilt rush over him immediately, “Wait-”

“No,” Saps stands, something watering at their eyes, “You’re right. I’ll… I’ll see you later, Pyder- 5pyder. Good luck with finals.”

Saps is gone before 5pyder has a chance to say anything else.

There was a knock at the door. Saps got up from their bed, going to let Flux in, to have whatever fuckass conversation their “friend” wanted to have. They walked over quickly, opening the door with a sigh. Fluxion, as always, was dressed to the “T”. Like he was going out with his friends. With the friends that never accepted Saps. Because why would they? What reason should they?

There was once a time when Saps thought it might have turned into more. Where the smiles were too soft, the kindness a little too sweet, the eyes a little too knowing. But, the two of them grew up, and with it, they grew apart. Saps knew it was stupid, sitting here and waiting for something, especially with how sweet Turntapp was.

And Saps liked Turntapp, a lot actually. Saps daydreamed about their first date, when Turntapp actually asked them out (Saps would wait patiently, because they wanted to be romanced, and the “slowburn” was nice). Turntapp was not only hot as hell, but he was smart (majoring in pre-law with a minor in political science), kind (he stayed longer than he had to, and when 5pyder had to go, Turntapp would walk both of them back to their dorms. Turntapp would walk to Pandora University’s dorms to make sure Saps got home safe), sweet (he paid for Saps’ ridiculously sweet, expensive coffee at least three times a week when he came to visit), thoughtful (he got Saps’ a journal after Saps mentioned one time they were struggling to come to terms with their friendship with Flux), and above all he was Turntapp- sweet, honest, kind, Turntapp.

And 5pyder had been a better friend than Fluxion had ever been. 5pyder was right when he had called them out earlier. Saps spent a lot of time at Yggdrasail because the people were just kinder. It’s why Davarit had chosen to go there all those years ago, it’s why Benji is one of the most popular frat presidents across both campus’, it’s why people come to watch the Yggdrasail football games even when they don’t understand the game because Schpood is that memorable. The people here are kind and interesting and good. And Flux couldn’t see that. Maybe it was because Elanulo was the President at Yggdrasail, maybe it was because Cynikka had chosen to go to Yggdrasil and Flux wanted so desperately to be different. 5pyder was a good friend; 5pyder was the one who texted them asking if they were okay after a hard exam, 5pyder was the one who worked on projects with them late into the night because Saps procrastinated, 5pyder was the one who Saps could go to no matter what and never feel judged. Maybe Saps had become the bad friend somewhere along the way.

“Hey buddy!” Flux was grinning, which usually meant he wanted something or was going to share some elaborate plan that somehow involved Saps. Because Saps always ended up being the scapegoat in Flux’s plans, “What’s been going on? Feels like it’s been forever since I’ve gotten to talk to ya, Saps!”

“Oh, yeah, I’ve been busy with school and the cafe, not much,” they shrugged, moving back to sit on their bed, making sure Flux went to sit on one of the chairs a little bit away from them. They sensed the shift from Flux as he noticed the distance, “What’s been up with you?”

“I’m so glad you asked,” his grin turned maniacal, but not in the way Schpood’s was; it was sinister, and no longer filled Saps’ expression with warmth and giddy joy, but a sense of dread. Oh. Yeah, this is the last time I’m gonna talk to Flux, isn’t it? “So, I was thinking-”

Saps listened to Flux’s plan, about separating the Yggdrasail University even further, about how they were the lesser school, and all Saps could think about was how dramatic Flux was being.

Saps’ stood up, towering over the younger, “Fluxion,” the use of his full name cause the other to pause, looking up with a raised eyebrow, “You’re being ridiculous,” their voice came out as a whisper at first, “we’re college students not a fucking revolution. What the hell are you talking about?”

Flux looked at them like they’d grown a second head, “What am I- what are you talking about? They’re clearly talking too much about this whole coming together thing at Pandora’s Box. You need to quit, Saps, they’re brainwashing you! Can’t you see, it’s that 5pyder guy-”

“Keep his name out of your mouth, Fluxion,” their voice doesn’t sound like their own as they put their head up, trying desperately not to cry at the fact they’re going to lose their closest friend, “they are lovely people. Schpood, 5pyder, Turntapp, your sister, mind you. And this bullshit you’re pulling out of your ass is ridiculous, Fluxion. You’re living in some fucked up world where you think you’re the main character and you need to come up with some story to- ugh! I can’t believe we’re even having this conversation- it’s ridiculous. Flux, you’re being ridiculous.”

But then he does the most Flux thing in existence, “Those people don’t work at Pandora Cafe. How do you know all those Yggdrasil students?”

That’s what you took from that- get out Flux. I don’t wanna see you around me anymore. If my baby brother starts acting like this shit, Flux, I swear to Ish, you will regret ever becoming my friend.”

“I already do,” his voice holds more venom than Saps has ever had directed at them. Saps flinches back, “I guess I didn’t know you as well as I thought I did. We won’t be speaking ever again, don’t you worry. As for Snow? I guess he was right- you’ve been spending all your time with a-”

“Get out of my dorm, Fluxion.”

Saps would deny it till the day they died, but their voice shook and they felt their heart crack as Fluxion left their room, and they knew they would never see him again.

At least not as the friend he used to be.
