Yelena walks into the apartment, grocery bags in hand. “I got the goods!”
Looking up from her spot in the living room, Kate pauses her frustrating search to find the perfect movie on Netflix. “Oh thank god,” she sighs. “At least one of us is having good luck.” Throwing the remote onto the couch, Kate makes her way over to the kitchen island, wrapping her arms around Yelena’s waist from behind. As Yelena dumps the bags onto the counter, Kate’s eyes light up at all the different options.
“And one more thing just for you,” pulling a final item out of the bags, Yelena turns around to face Kate, revealing a mini bag of only KitKats.
Kate gasps. “You love me so much.” Snatching the bag, she immediately tears into it.
“Well obviously,” Yelena laughs.
“Thank you thank you thank you!” Kate leans down and gives Yelena a quick kiss on the lips before circling around to the other side of the island. Unwrapping one of the candies, Kate pops it into her mouth with a crunch, the milk chocolate immediately melting on her tongue.
Watching Yelena pick through the bags of candy, Kate can’t help but notice that something is missing. “You didn’t buy any Reeses?”
“Why would I?” Yelena asked, seemingly unfazed by the question as she continues to make her selection.
“Because they’re your favorite?” Kate is unsure whether or not Yelena is messing with her. She didn’t put it past the woman, but at the same time, Yelena didn’t joke about her Reeses. When they first started dating, Kate was genuinely shocked at the amount of Reeses the woman could consume on any given day.
“Not anymore. Ooh this one looks good,” Yelena mumbles to herself as she picks up another candy. At this point, she has so many pieces that she’s starting to use her shirt as a makeshift basket.
“Since when?”
Yelena finally looks up, trying her best to remember a timeline. “About three months ago, when you told me you were allergic to peanuts.”
Kate blinks in surprise, trying her best to comprehend what Yelena was saying.
“You stopped eating them… because of me?”
“Oh course. Why would I like something that could hurt you?” Yelena asks as if it’s the most ridiculous question in the world. Before Kate can even respond, Yelena plucks one last piece of candy and walks over towards the living room. “Come on, I want to start the movie.”
Kate is confused why Yelena is acting like this is nothing, when to Kate this was… well to say it was everything seemed extreme given that at the end of the day they were literally talking about candy. But Yelena had given up something she loved simply because of Kate’s allergies. She hadn’t even realized this was a decision Yelena had made, but now that she thinks of it, she genuinely can’t remember the last time she saw the woman eat a Reeses.
Watching Yelena settle onto the couch, Kate’s heart fills with love. She has no idea how she got so lucky, but in that moment, Kate swears she’s gonna marry this woman one day.
