Work Text:

It was their engagement party, a celebration that Samira almost begged for so their family and friends could celebrate. Mel wasn’t too excited about the plans but once she heard that everyone was chipping in and attending, her mind was quickly switched.

The days leading up to the party was top secret, Mel and Frank weren’t allowed to know anything about it. They weren’t even told where it would be held, just given directions and the time to arrive.

Everyone had been cryptic, just offering small smiles or zipped lips in response to either Langdon or King asking for information. Her dress was secured for the celebration and Frank had a new suit for the occasion, helpfully arranged by Abby herself when he had no clue on where to start.

“Wow,” He smiles, walking into their shared bedroom and laying his eyes on his fiancé for the first time since she got changed. It was a delicate number, a short, white dress with pretty flowers sewn into the fabric and ended mid thigh. The top part was fitted, a corset type and fit her beautifully. Her hair complimented the details of the dress, half up and half down with a flowery clip to hold her hair up and soft curls throughout.

“Frank,” She turns around away from the mirror and he has to stop himself from kissing her. She looks like a goddess and he wonders how he’ll be on their actual wedding day. “You look handsome.”

“I do? Abby found it out from our closet, figured it would be our something borrowed.” He shrugs, he wasn’t even sure it qualifies or was bad luck.

“It suits you, I love it.” Her hands smooth down his suit jacket once he’s close enough and he catches her hands, kissing her palms.

“Are you ready? Samira has sent about a million messages telling me to be on time, I think she’s expecting us to be late.”

“She called me earlier, warning me that if we’re making out beforehand then she’d know.” She shakes her head, “We do have a record of being late by getting sidetracked.”

“The gala doesn’t count, the time was changed” he waves off, “But I need a second to admire my bride,” His hands go down to rest on her hips and he takes a step back, looking her over and making a show of fanning himself.

She giggles and it warms his heart, making him kiss her nose and then her forehead. “We don’t have to stay all night, just say the word and we can come home.” He tells her, making sure she knew. “Our friends would understand,”

“I know, i’ll make sure to keep that in mind but we should at least go for a couple hours. Everyone will be there and Samira and Trinity organised this for us, even Gloria signed off on all of us being off tonight.”

“You have a point, sweetheart. I can’t believe I have to actually be nice and thank Santos, do you think i’ll become Pinocchio?”

She hums quietly, pulling away to grab her purse and shove in some last minute essentials, “I’ll do it for you if you’d like, I can imagine how much it’ll pain you.”

“Like a knife to the heart. What did I do to deserve you?”

“We have to go, we have 30 minutes.”

The entire ride there is quiet, the pair basking in the quiet before all hell broke loose and they wouldn’t have a second to breathe until they’re home. Google Maps is directing them, they’re still in central Pittsburgh but more on the flashy side and it’s amusing.

“What kind of money have they paid for this party? They do realise we have a wedding too, right?” Frank speaks up, looking under the windshield to peek up at the tall apartment buildings and big houses.

“I’m hoping we’re just passing this part of town, praying.”

But the exit of this part of town never came, Google Maps told them they had arrived when they pulled up to a nice country club type building. Cars were parked outside and music was playing inside, decorations hung up on the windows and someone was stood by the door.

Frank gets out of the car, pocketing his phone and hurrying to the other side to open the door for his new fiancé. “Scratch what I said, I won’t be thanking Santos but merely asking her what she was thinking.”

“I don’t think it’s too bad, maybe it was cheaper than we thought.” Her hand rests on his chest and he locks the car door, pocketing the keys and taking Mel’s hand in his.

They greet the man at the door who takes them through the building to the back gardens where they see Samira straight away.

“Oh my goodness! Frank! Mel!” She squeals, leaving Jack’s side to run up to them and pull each of them into a hug. “How are you guys? Excited for tonight?”

“‘Mira this place looks expensive,” Mel winces, his hand coming down to rest on the small of her back and his thumb moving back and forth over the fabric of the dress.

“Oh honey don’t worry, Abbot and Robby offered to help pay for everything! Plus we had people chipping in with second hand decorations or helping set up so technically me and Santos didn’t pay for anything,” She winks. “Princess and Perlah offered to cook some dishes for the buffet and Gloria sent enough Champagne to last all night, her way of saying congratulations.”

Mel and Frank look around to where all their friends were stood watching them, “Everyone is here,” Mel whispers, laughing softly

“Everyone is here to support you guys, we all love you both and we’re so happy for you two!” Samira grins, looking behind her. “Frank, even Abby is here with Tanner and Millie. We tried to get Becca to come but she was booked up at the Centre,” She chuckles. “But promises to come by later when the party has winded down a little, Abbot offered to pick her up.”

Mel sniffs, wiping at her eye as a stray tear falls. “This is all too much, just for us.”

“You guys deserve it,” Robby cuts in, “After everything you’ve been through, you both deserve some happiness and it starts tonight.” He hands them both a flute of Champagne and waves at the DJ to start some party music. “Now slap on some smiles and get to celebrating!”

Frank and Mel share a look, wide smiles occupying both their faces. “It’s weird seeing Robby not in scrubs,” Frank says once they were alone and everyone was migrating to socialising or dancing.

“It is,” She hums. “But it’s nice having everyone together.” She downs her Champagne and takes his hand, “Now will you dance with me Mr Langdon?”

“I sure will, future Mrs Langdon.”

“King-Langdon,” She corrects, pulling him to the dance floor once he had finished his drink

“Wouldn’t Langdon-King roll off the tongue easier?”

“We have enough time to hash it out.”
