Hashirama knows Madara has been lonely now days, with his brother dead and his clan insulting the fact he didn't got Hokage behind his back. It was upsetting to see him like that.
So one day he absentminded tells him on one of their strolls around the village "you know, maybe you should adopt a kid". Those words fall out like the most obvious thing known to mankind.
Madara stops in his tracks confused "Me? " he gestures with a finger at himself "No thanks" he snorts as if it was an usual bad joke of Hashirama.
"Oh come on, Madara, you know you're lonely" he puts an arm around the other's shoulder "this will help against it"
"No snotty brat can help against my nonexistent loneliness" he glares at his friend, because fuck no he wasn't lonely.
"Uhm" a kid with weird orange glasses tugs at Madara's back "Excuse me, you dropped your sword" he handed the heavy sword with a smile.
Madara looks at it, then at the kid, and back at it. "Do you have parents? " he asks as if it was very normal to say. Hashirama facepalms himself with a chuckle, typical Madara.
"Uhm no" the kid frowns "did I do something wrong? "
Madara takes his sword back and pats the kid " of course not, say, whats your name kid? "
"My name is Uchiha Obito" he mumbles, face red from the patting.
"Obito... Obito.. " The Uchiha clan leader repeats, trying to remember if he ever saw the boy "I don't seem to recall you, Obito. I'm Uchiha Madara"
"I know and uh might be because I don't live near the usual residence of Uchiha, I'm more on the other side because my grandma is sick so I stay with her"
"Ok, my kid now" Madara takes Obito over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
Hashirama interrupts, frantically waving his hands "that's not what I meant by adopting a kid! "
