   "Ray, this is going to kill you." Karn's voice was rough with emotion. "If you don't get out, he's going to kill you."

   "I can't," Ray whispered. The words felt like admitting defeat. "I can't leave. My father—"

   "I don't care about your father." The force of Karn's words startled them both. Karn took a breath, visibly composing himself. "I care about you. I care that you're being hurt and I can't—" He stopped, jaw clenched. "Let me help you."

   Ray wanted to say yes. God, he wanted to. But fear won, as it always did.

   "You can't help me," Ray said, replacing his sunglasses. "No one can."
