Chapter Text
When you are born, your parents think about how amazing your life is going to be. They think about what they want you to grow up to be. They think about how amazing you will be. They think about how they get to be the proud parents of the child they just had. They think about every aspect of how they think your life will be like. But no matter how much they imagine your life, how much they think they know how things will turn out and how they think you will turn out, nothing every goes the way they think. No matter how much they try to protect their child, things still go wrong. Parents can’t protect their children forever. Life is chaotic and no one can protect you from that, no matter how much you try. So the parents are forced to give up on their dreams and images of how you will grow up and most parent’s won’t forgive you for that. But a child in their right mind, would never believe their parents would forget their exitance because of something out your control? That is torture in itself. Your ruined life only torturing you again and again as you watch you parents refuse to accept you are their child because of an attack that you didn’t cause. Growing up, watching your parent’s go crazy because they are your parent’s and they don’t want to accept it.
Well, that is the life of Luna Montague, Heiress to Montague fortune.
Luna was born into a pureblood wealthy family. But the family weren’t like usal pureblood families. Sure, the Montague family were related to the Black family. Sure, Luna’s parents were raised like all the horrible pureblood families you read about. But Luna’s parents didn’t want that for Luna. They raised Luna in a loving household. They let Luna be an actual child. They spoiled her rotten. She was the apple of their eyes. They loved Luna and never wanted to hurt Luna. But that just made everything so much worse when the attack happened.
On 2nd March 1982, on Luna's 2nd birthday, the family were walking home from a day out of celebrating Luna’s birthday. They were in their own world. They didn’t even notice the sun go to bed and the moon come out. They didn’t notice until it was too late. Until the wolves were upon them. Until their daughter was bleeding out of a bite on her hip. Though, Adults can be stupid and that stupidly caused them to heal their daughter themselves before taking her back home. Perhaps they were delusional, perhaps they were trying to prove to themselves that it wasn’t true or perhaps they just didn’t realize because for a mouth, they didn’t talk about that day or get Luna checked or had even think anything was wrong until a month had passed. Until the April full moon arrived. Until Luna started screaming in pain. Until a puppy wolf appeared on the bed that Luna had just been sat on. The parents couldn’t believe it. They didn’t want to believe this. This could be true. But it was. Their sweet baby daughter was a hideous monster. Their sweet baby daughter was something that deserved be killed. Their sweet baby daughter was a werewolf. No, not their daughter. Their daughter couldn’t be a werewolf. Their daughter died that day the werewolves attacked, and this hideous, monstrous beast took her place. In their mind, they had lost their daughter. The 2-year-old Luna had to watch her parents do a 180 on her. The 2-year-old Luna had to watch her parents had to watch her parents go insane from anger, shock and grief. The 2-year-old Luna had to watch her parents had to watch her parents be dragged away to St Mungo’s.
Luna was forced to spend the rest of her life in orphanage, that locked her in a dog cage every night and most of the day. Luna’s life had gone off the rails and there was nothing she could do about it. Her life was ruined, and she was stuck in it. Luna was no longer spoiled rotten. Luna was no longer the apple of anyone’s eyes. Luna was no longer in a loving household. Luna was no longer living a life with no pain. Luna was no longer able to be an actual child. No Luna was hated. No, Luna was treated like untrained mut. NO, Luna was raised as a monster who could kill you at any moment. Luna no longer was the happily little girl her parents knew and loved. She was an angry little girl filled with pain and grief for a time she couldn’t have back. Just a little girl who would do anything to no longer feel that grief and pain anymore. Just a little girl who starts fights and gets in trouble just to feel something.
Luna was broken because life is chaotic.
But then a strange man arrived at the orphanage one day when Luna was 6 years old. An old, tall and odd man with long silver hair and a matching beard. The odd man took her out of the orphanage. The old man said his name was Albus Dumbledore and he was taking her to her new home, to her new family. Luna didn’t believe him. But the man took her to a run-down bungalow in the middle of a forest. The bungalow looked abandoned, but Luna knew it wasn’t. She hears that someone was inside. She could smell the scent of someone was inside. Whoever it was, they smelt like wet dogs. Luna didn’t really understand why they were here until Dumbledore walked straight into the bungalow without knocking. Luna quickly followed, she was curious. The inside of the cottage was a tip. Boxes were thrown all over. There were books all over the place. Dirty pots all over the place. Dirty smelly clothes were everywhere. There were doom pales in everyone's way. The fridge was empty. There were cobwebs in all the cupboards. The sink and bath were dry. The sofa had all its cushions taken away. The armchair was ripped up, feathers everywhere. The apartment was a tip. But what shocked Luna the most was the man sat on the ripped armchair. The man was young, only 26, Luna could tell because of his scent but the man looked weel over 30. He had light brown hair, brown eyes and scars all over his face. He was wearing a woolly jumper that was all shades of brown with black baggy jeans. There was a familiar scent to this man that Luna could not place. But the man stood up and spoke. Everything became clear at once.
“Albus, I said no. I’m not fit to be a parent, to raise a child”
“Remus, my boy, Luna needs you and you need a pack once more”
“I’m a wrack, Albus. I’m a monster. I can’t adopt a 6-year-old child”
“What if she was Harry, Remus? You would take her in then”
“But Albus.... I’m a werewolf”
“So is Luna”
“what....”
Luna never returned to the orphanage after that but that didn’t mean things were plan sailing. Luna and Remus didn’t know how to react with each other. Remus had never taken care of a child before and Luna had forgotten what it was like to having parents that cared about her. Remus was still grieving the death of his best friends and the betrayal of another best friend. Luna was a broken, angry, naughty child who just needed to be care for. The two didn’t understand what to do even if they both now shared the same last name and Luna was now legally Remus daughter. But as the years went on, the two connected over their pain. But as the years went on, the two became a pack. But as the years went on, they slowly became father and daughter. As the years went on, Remus taught Luna all about the things he needed to. He taught her everything she needed to know about magic and the wizarding world. He taught her everything she would learn at a muggle primary school if she could go. He taught her about LGBTQ+ identities. He was making sure he wasn’t raising a bigot. He made sure that Luna was always comfortable in her skin, despite the curse they both lived with. He helped Luna come to terms with herself, with her scars, with her monthly problem and with .....
“Dad.... I don’t think I’m a girl”
“Oh, then what are you?”
“ummm. I.... I don’t feel I have a gender”
“And that is perfectly fine. Do you have pronouns and a name you’d like me to use?”
“My name is Kai Lupin, and my pronouns are they/them”
“Hello Kai, I am your dad, and I love you”
