    In pharmacology, a route of administration is the way by which a drug, fluid, or other substance is taken into the body. Oral, sublingual, and rectal methods of administration all follow the enteral route, which follows the gastro-intestinal tract.

    A softgel capsule is a form of oral dosage which has a gelatin shell that is intended to be dissolved in the stomach. However, medications administered orally can be susceptible to the "first pass effect," where some of the drug is lost as it is partially metabolized elsewhere in the body. To bypass this, the liquid inside a softgel capsule can be accessed and administered rectally. This increases the rate of absorption and decreases side effects of nausea.
