Chapter Text
The sun’s light burst through the window, shining into your eyes as you woke up. Turning onto your other side, you squinted and checked the time.
You got up and stretched, raising your arms as you yawned.
You changed into your uniform, and got ready for school.
Days like these were the ones you liked the most, with almost no one walking through your route to school. It was better without all the hassle anyway, you didn’t mix well with people. Not only because you spent most of your time with little human interaction, but when it came to your social skills, you only had your past to blame.
Walking up the steps to the school’s door, you headed to you classroom. Hopefully no one tried to talk to you today as well, but that was wishful thinking, really. Because, much to your distaste, you were somewhat popular. You were best friends with school prince, meaning people heard of you, so they come to the conclusion that they must know more about you.
Sitting in your seat, you stared out the window with your chin resting on your hand. You savored the view from the window, the sun’s bright yellow-orange hues filling the classroom. Enjoying the heat hitting your face, you sighed contentedly.
Nothing could possibly ruin this, you thought. Absolutely nothi-
“Y/n! Fancy seeing you here.” An irritating voice called from beside you.
“We’re at school, Teru.” You replied, unamused.
“Come on now, don’t be like that. How could you be so mean to your own best friend?” He turned towards you in his seat, feigning a pout. You grimaced.
“Annoying best friend.” You mumbled, correcting him.
“But best friend nonetheless!” He grinned.
“Unfortunately.” You sighed, but a small smile graced your lips.
Teru Minamoto, your best friend. He was popular, outgoing, handsome, and both girls and boys alike fill his locker with about a dozen love letters each day. You grew up with him, as both of your families were powerful and well-known exorcist clans.
“Hold up! If they were both well-known exorcist clans, why are we a school wonder?” You may ask? Well, my dear reader, your family was the exact cause of your problem.
You see, when your father made a bet with a powerful apparition, he agreed to hand over your mother to it, if it succeeded in getting your father beaten up enough that he couldn’t fight anymore.
Unfortunately, your father was beaten (skill issue), and he begged the apparition to have mercy on your mother. He was so desperate, he even offered you up to it (bitch). And so, the apparition agreed.
As soon as you were born, your father made a contract with the apparition;
That you would be bound to the school fountain as a school wonder from the moment you could enroll, until the moment you graduate.
The Minamoto Clan were surprisingly calm about this, and assured your parents that there was nothing more they could do, and that it wasn’t their fault. (It was.)
However, despite being a school wonder, they still shaped you into an exorcist (bruh). After all, they were still an exorcist clan, and they wanted their tradition carried on.
That was how you and Teru met.
As two young exorcists raised together, you both found comfort in each other, especially when your parents were always gone. Since you both turned eight, your parents deemed you responsible enough to take care of yourselves. But with no parents around, you felt lonely in your own house. Unlike you, Teru had siblings. Seeing how alone you must’ve felt in your own house, he suggested you stay at his whenever you felt like it. And couldn’t have agreed with him more. Plus, his siblings were so cute. So from the age of eight, you basically lived at his house, even eventually getting your own set of keys to the place.
You were attached at the hip, and stuck together throughout everything. From school activities, to late-night exorcisms, you never left each other's side.
But right now, you kinda wished that weren’t the case.
”Psst. Y/n. Hey. Hey.” The blonde idiot poked your arm with his pen as you sat in class, listening to the teacher drone on about a topic you had no interest in.
”Y/nnn… I’m bored. Hey. Can you hear me? Y/n-”
He was abruptly kicked in the shin from under the tables.
”O-owch-!” He winced quietly, almost dropping the pen he was poking you with. You turned your head slightly to flash an innocent closed eyed grin, and turned back to the teacher again.
He pouted at this.
”How cruel…” He whispered with a small frown.
You sighed.
Tucking your hair behind your ear, you discreetly took out your airpod. You handed it to him under his table. He took it and placed it in his ear, smiling now that he succeeded in getting your attention.
You both listened to music for the rest of class.
”We’re home!” Teru’s voice echoed through the house as you took your shoes off at the door. “Weeeee’rrreeeee hooooommmmeeee!!!” He repeated loudly.
”Agh- shut up, my ears…” you winced and covered your ears at his yells. ”They heard you already…”
”Teru!”
”Big brother Teru!”
Two familiar voices called out, the sound of them running towards us speeding up.
”Oh no.” Teru sweatdropped. “Y/n… Y/n-“
He turned around to use you as a human shield, but you stepped away in time to dodge him.
Bitch.
He was going to suffer the consequences of his actions, whether he liked it or not.
“TERUU!!!”
Kou and Tiara pounced onto Teru, knocking him onto the floor. The 14 year old got up and walked overto you.
“Hey Kou. Got any leftover pastries from home economics today?” you asked, ruffling his hair.
”Yup! They’re waiting in the kitchen.” He grinned.
”This is why you’re my favourite Minamoto boy.” you smiled and hugged him, heading to the kitchen.
“Big-bro-ther! Big-bro-ther!” Tiara giggled.
The 5 year old was jumping on Teru like he was a trampoline with every syllable she spoke.
“H-hey!- oof- not fair! I’m -ouch- your brother! She’s- ow!- she’s not even getting hurt!”
”Skill issue.” You called from the kitchen, munching on Kou’s croissants.
Gosh, I feel like I’m ascending…
”This is not fair.” Teru frowned, appearing in the doorway with Tiara clinging onto his leg like a koala. He limped to the table and sat down beside you, reaching down to grab a croissant.
SMACK
”Owie!!!” He pouted at you, pulling his hand back. You grabbed the plate of croissants and cradled them, still eating with one in your mouth.
”Mine.” You grunted like a territorial Neanderthal.
Teru gulped and smiled nervously.
”Come on, Y/n… just one? I’ll… I’ll buy you some strawberry milk tonight?” He bargained.
You thought for a few moments and hesitantly pushed the plate over to him.
He grinned and reached for a croissant.
”Mine!!!” Tiara shouted as she let go of Teru’s leg, snatching the plate and running away with it.
”Tiara!! No!!!”
You cackled as Teru cried out and chased after her.
Later that night
"Y/n. Y/n- please no-" Teru clasped his hands together pleadingly as you grabbed his arm, dragging him to a cornershop.
It was late at night, and you both left the house for your nightly exorcism duties.
"I didn't even get to eat it!!!" He frowned.
"I don't care! You let Tiara get it, so you owe me, and you're getting me that strawberry milk!!" You scolded him.
"But-but I didn't eat it!" He tried (and failed) to release your iron grip on his sleeve.
This hoe smh...
You tugged his arm and went inside the shop.
You walked along the aisles and stopped at the fridge.
"That one."
You pulled at his sleeve slightly pointing to your favourite brand of strawberry milk. He grumbled something under his breath and took the milk. You both walked over to the counter and he paid.
”Late night stroll, huh?” The cashier asked you, a suspicious amount of glimmer in her eyes as she smirked.
”Uh… yeah. Just taking in the fresh… midnight… air.” You flashed her a nervous smile.
Hearing Teru snicker quietly beside you, you stood on his foot. He shut up fast.
”Interesting… very interesting.” She hums, that same stupid mischievous grin on her face. She placed the bottle of strawberry milk in a bag. ”That’ll be ¥350 please.” Teru handed over the money and took the bag as you thanked her.
”Bye-bye now. Enjoy your little lovers’ stroll.” She grinned, waving at us as we walked out.
…what?
Already outside, you turned to look back at Teru to see if he had heard the same thing.
He was already doubled over in a fit of poorly suppressed laughter.
”Pfft… ahaha…. BAHAHAHAHAA!!!” He guffawed. You punched his arm.
“Not funny, man. I felt like throwing up. Seriously.” You sighed in exasperation.
You looked at each other for a moment before bursting into laughter again. You bickered until you finally sat down, backs leaning against a glowing vending machine. Sitting side by side, you took the strawberry milk and opened it. You took a sip, savouring the heavenly taste of it in my mouth. Sighing happily, you took a look over at Teru. He was already looking at you.
”Want a sip?” You asked, thinking he might’ve been a little thirsty. To be honest, you felt a little guilty for forcing him to buy the drink for yourself.
”Mhm.” He nodded. He took a slow sip.
”Hm.” He hummed in slightly surprise, looking at the bottle. “This is better than I expected.”
“Of course it is. It’s strawberry milk. Haven’t you tried it before?”
He shook his head.
”What? Seriously? You’re missing out dude…” you sighed and shook your head like a disappointed father.
”Whatever!” He shut his eyes and stuck his tongue out at you.
You furrowed your brows, ready to start bickering with him.
”Ugh! You’re so childish! Grow u-“
Suddenly, the vending machine behind you shook.
You both immediately stood up in fighting stance, exorcism weapons at the ready. You had my strawberry milk in one hand.
Just then, from inside the vending machine, a snotty looking purply-brown creature squeezed itself from the collection box, the mass of sludge rapidly building up until finally, a large, 8 foot tall, grotesque apparition stood face to face with you.
”Awh shit.”
