Chapter Text
Weeks after BroZone's chaotic but triumphant reunion following Mount Rageous's collapse, Pop Village was buzzing with renewed life. The Putt Putt Trolls, finally free from their hidden bunker, were fully integrating into the vibrant community. Viva, their unofficial leader, was at the heart of it all, darting between construction sites. Her wild pink hair was secured in a practical ponytail, clipboard in hand, as she directed teams building new pod homes and mini-golf playgrounds. The air was alive with hammering, laughter, and uplifting pop music, weaving the two communities together.
Poppy, her younger sister and queen of Pop Village, was alongside her, but struggled to match Viva’s relentless pace. "Viva, you have to take a break!" Poppy called out one afternoon. Branch, ever cautious, agreed. "Seriously, you're going to burn out. We have this under control." Tiny Diamond, perched on Branch's shoulder, chimed in, "Yo, Aunt Viva, chillax or you'll max out your vibes!"
Viva waved them off with a determined grin. "No time, sis! We need these ramps installed before the rain. And don't get me started on the zoning permits; King Peppy is obsessed with 'historical preservation' or whatever." She was now the essential government liaison, navigating the transition between the Putt Putt and Pop Trolls. It was exhausting but fulfilling, watching old bunker friends share laughter and stories with new neighbors. The only remaining awkwardness was her formal introduction to the BroZone brothers. The reunion's family hug, fueled by adrenaline and tears, hardly counted as a real meeting.
The brothers were already woven into the village's fabric. Clay, the organized one, occasionally checked in with his own clipboard, focused on budgets. "Viva, if we tweak this layout, we save 20% on materials," he’d remind her. Bruce (formerly Spruce) integrated food, bustling around with trays of exotic Vacay Island flavors for the village feasts. Floyd, the sensitive soul, led music therapy, soothing anxieties with his gentle voice and guitar. John Dory, the rugged teal troll with wild green hair and goggles, was often spotted wandering the edges, helping out but mostly keeping to himself in Rhonda, his massive armadillo bus. He seemed adventurous, perhaps a bit mysterious, and certainly more than "just anyone."
One particularly hectic day brought them together. Viva was checking anchors on a new rope bridge over a ravine, part of the obstacle course. As she climbed the ladder, a sudden, powerful tug from below nearly sent her tumbling. "Whoa!" she yelped, gripping the rung, a jolt of bunker-escape panic flashing through her mind.
Below her was John Dory, hauling the rope with surprising strength, his fur vest dusted with sawdust. He looked up, startled, his eyes wide behind his goggles. For a brief second, she saw a wildness in his spiked hair and rugged build: a shadow of the Bergen threats she'd hidden from. But then he broke into a lopsided, charming grin. "Sorry! Didn't see you there. Just testing the tension."
Viva descended carefully, shaking off the irrational fright. Up close, he was merely intriguing, with a tangible spark of adventure. "No problem," she said, brushing her hands off. "But next time, give a warning. I thought you were some feral troll and nearly had a heart attack!"
John Dory chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Wild troll, huh? I’ve been called worse. My name is John Dory, by the way, though I figured you knew." He extended a hand formally, like a diplomat. Internally, he felt like "just some guy," Branch’s errant older brother, insignificant compared to this dynamic village leader.
Viva took his hand in a firm grip. "Viva," she replied, matching his formality. "Leader of the Putt Putt Trolls. It's nice to officially meet you. That family hug at the reunion doesn't count."
He laughed, a deep, rumbling sound that made her stomach flutter. "Fair enough. I wasn't sure if I even registered with you, what with how busy you are."
Viva smiled playfully. "You're Clay's brother, and Branch's, Floyd's, and Bruce's, the whole BroZone package. How could I forget the guy who led the band?"
John Dory's cheeks colored slightly. "John Dory, yeah." He bumped his fist against hers in greeting, the contact lingering just a second longer than casual, feeling unexpectedly natural.
Their conversation flowed easily. As they walked the site, John shared knot-tying tips from his adventuring days. "I rigged up bridges like this constantly when I was solo. Twist the vines counter-clockwise for extra hold. That saves you from a nasty fall."
Viva was impressed. "Not bad, Adventurer. Most trolls here only stick to glitter and songs. You have real skills."
"Adventure teaches you a few things," he shrugged. "But what about you? Leading a whole tribe out of hiding is a huge feat. You're the hero around here."
The compliment brought a warmth to her chest. Clay smirked when he spotted them. "JD? You're actually helping? Miracles do happen."
John rolled his eyes. "Shut it, Clay. Just showing Viva how to tie a proper knot. You could use a lesson."
Poppy bounced up next, with Branch in tow. "Ooh, Viva and John Dory! Finally chatting? We should celebrate with a group sing-along later!"
Branch groaned, but smiled. "Poppy, not everything needs a song. Though, it might not hurt."
Floyd offered, "A song might help with the integration vibes. What do you think, Viva? I'm working on a melody about new beginnings."
Viva laughed. "Maybe later, guys. Right now, we build bridges. But hey, John, want to stick around and help with the next section?"
John grinned, happily shedding his previous insecurity. "Wouldn't miss it."
They worked side-by-side all afternoon, his strength making quick work of hauling materials, her enthusiasm directing the teams. During a break, John gazed at the horizon. "Not sure what's next for me. Thought about heading out, but the family is here now. It's nice sticking around. Feels like I might have a place after all."
"I get that," Viva empathized. "Being out here after the bunker feels like a dream: scary, but good. You have stories from the road that could inspire these trolls; don't underestimate yourself."
"You handled it like a pro," he replied, his expression softening. "Branch talks about you. Says you're the bravest troll he knows."
She blushed. "Pfft, he's biased. But thanks. And you? You're not so bad yourself, Mr. Adventure."
The silence that followed was comfortable. John cleared his throat. "Hey, are you free later? After all this construction madness?"
"Me? Uh, probably more paperwork. Why?"
He grinned, playfully poking her shoulder. "I thought maybe we could grab a snack or something. Talk more about ropes and adventures."
She laughed, poking him back. "Smooth, John Dory. Real smooth."
Clay groaned from a distance. "Oh no, not this again. JD, don't scare her off!"
As the afternoon waned, Bruce offered tropical smoothies, and John walked Viva back to her pod. "Before I forget," he said, "Peppy mentioned a meeting tomorrow to discuss Putt Putt history with BroZone ties. You in?"
Viva perked up. "With my dad? That could be interesting. We should go together; we might uncover some fun family connections."
"Deal. See you then."
As he turned to leave, Viva caught a flicker of unease beneath his bravado. Facing King Peppy, another leader, clearly carried the weight of his past. He slowed for a moment before disappearing into the twilight. Viva lingered, watching him go, his movements confident despite the tension she sensed. She smiled softly. Whatever the meeting brought, political, personal, or both, it was going to change things for all of them. Little did she know, their next meeting, with her dad, would uncover secrets that could change everything.
