“Beat it, Hasegawa! I told you my piles are off-limits!” Narumi hisses. Through heavy bangs, he scrunches his face menacingly. With the flash of his sharp teeth, he warns that he’s getting angry. Resonant growls are meant to scare off the intruding vice-captain, and perhaps if the giraffe hybrid weren’t several feet taller, it may have worked. Unfortunately for Narumi, giraffe aren’t usually afraid of badgers.
Hasegawa grips tightly on Narumi’s scruff and yanks him up from where he stands. Growls transition into agitated yelps as Narumi realizes his disadvantage. The honey badger attempts to swat at his captor, to no avail. Amused, Hasegawa holds in his chuckles while he watches Narumi struggle. The captain’s arms are too short to reach Hasegawa, so he flails pathetically. When in such a helpless position, Narumi resembles a house-cat more than a honey badger. Still, Narumi hisses and wiggles and whines.
“Stop that!” Hasegawa roughly shakes Narumi. “You need to clean. We’re expecting company.”
Narumi gnashes his teeth, “Why the hell does my office need to be clean for that?” Honey badgers are notorious for their ill-temperament. The mammal is described as a highly territorial and aggressive beast. Gen Narumi, the honey badger hybrid who captains the First Division, is no exception. Hasegawa shakes the man like a rag. Narumi’s fury is soon replaced by nausea. Narumi whines, dizzy from the repetitive motion. Hasegawa learned years ago that the only way to curb Narumi’s anger was to get him tired. His strategy proves effective this evening. Narumi loses the will to fight and demands immediate release.
“Put me down! Holy shit, I’m gonna pass out,” Narumi groans weakly.
Upon release, the captain frantically scurries across the floor to the mountain-like terrain made entirely of Yamazon boxes, forgotten trash bags, and overpriced Gundom models. Narumi buries himself deep in his office wasteland, burrowing as if to make an impromptu den. Despite his best efforts at hiding, his short fuzzy black tail sticks up though the sea of cardboard. Hasegawa leans down to flick the exposed appendage with his pointer finger.
“Ow! Quit it!” Offended, the tail slinks away from Hasegawa’s assault.
“You’re making this harder than it has to be.” Rolling up his sleeves, Hasegawa prepares to dig through the chaos to retrieve the unruly hybrid. He reaches in blindly. Instantly, his hand brushes against the fuzz of the honey badger's hair. Narumi's head flinches away before Hasegawa can grab him. Pigheaded shouts ring out as Hasegawa resumes his pursuit.
“Go away! Go away! This is my base! This is my office! This is my stuff!” Narumi snarls.
Hasegawa isn’t perturbed in the least. “Enough with your attitude, Narumi! You’ll be happier in a neat environment! I’ll let you keep a few boxes!” Finally, he gets a proper grip on the back of Narumi’s shirt. Hasegawa is elbow deep in the mess of Yamazon boxes. He can’t see the evasive badger, but he trusts what he can feel.
Narumi squeaks, unable to break away, “Let go!”
As Hasegawa pulls him out, Narumi lunges up to chomp straight down on his arm.
Several hours after the messy ordeal, Hasegawa gives a tour to the visiting government officials. He leads them down a peaceful hallway and into Narumi’s freshly cleaned office. Narumi paces inside, wearing an annoyed expression. He hovers protectively in front of a uniform wall of cardboard boxes. The boxes now only take up one-fourth of the room, instead of the entire floor. Even though it’s a massive improvement, it’s still too cluttered for Hasegawa’s liking. Were it not for the minor injury he sustained, he would've been able to fully clean the office. Instead, time was wasted listening to the medical staff explain how to clean a honey badger bite wound. For his health, Hasegawa will leave the badger alone for a while. Perhaps he'll try removing boxes when the captain is sleeping.
“It’s a good thing he got his rabies shot,” Hasegawa mumbles under his breath. He leads the guests out of the office and resumes his lecture on the history of Ariake Base. His audience of officials is polite enough to not question why the honey badger captain stuck his tongue out at their guide.
The tour continues on and Narumi guards his office for the rest of the day.
