DAY 21: Stranded

this is so self indulgent

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

When a portal forms around his girls, Tim does what any parent would do: jump into the portal after them.

And of course, when Jason sees Tim jump through a portal, he does what any partner would do: jump into the portal as well.

They expect it to be Moss and Minnie’s home universe, prepared to face off against Bryce Wayne again.

Instead, they find themself in the manor. A manor that looks… different. It’s nothing glaringly off, just… different.

Different blankets on the couch. Art that wasn’t on the walls before. Books stacked on the side tables.

And sure, they don’t go to the manor often, but they think they would notice these changes.

“Oh my!”

Tim, Jason, and the girls all look up.

“Grandpa Alfie!” Moss and Minnie cheer, running to hug his legs.

“My goodness,” Alfred says. He looks at Tim and Jason with question, but his gaze is analytical, taking in their appearances as though he’s searching for something.

“Are you… Other Tim?” Alfred asks.

“Depends who Other Tim is,” Tim says slowly.

“There’s another Boy Me?!” Moss gasps.

Alfred’s eyes widen before he lets out a tired sigh. “It seems things have gotten even more complicated.”

“Alfie,” a familiar voice calls. “What’s going on in here?” The other Jason enters and freezes at the sight of the dimensional travelers. “Oh, wow. This is…”

“Weird,” the two Jasons say together.

The other Jason’s eyes latch onto Moss and Minnie and his brows shoot up. He does a double take between them and Tim and Jason.

“Oh,” Jason says. He points to Moss and Minnie. “Me and Tim from an alternate universe where we’re kid girls.”

“...I think I’m gonna need more than that,” the other Jason says.

“Woah,” Minnie breathes. “Two Sunnys.”

“Sunny?” the other Jason repeats.

“Nickname,” Jason says. “Which… will be helpful to distinguish the two of us.”

The other Jason nods in agreement. “Speaking of,” he turns to the girls, “what are your names?”

“Moss!” “Minnie!”

“Well, it’s very nice to meet you,” Jason says. “How did…”

“Dimension travel,” Sunny says.

Jason sighs, running his fingers through his hair. “Isn’t it always?”

“You have a lot of that here?”

“You have no idea.”

Alfred clears his throat. “Would the young misses like to have a snack?”

Moss and Minnie perk up, looking to their dads for permission.

“Minnie’s got a gluten—”

“Sensitivity, yes,” Alfred says. “I’m sure I will find something that is suitable for her stomach.”

And though they’re on an unfamiliar universe and the two are understandably paranoid, especially with their girls, they know they have a lot to discuss that they need to do without the girls present, so they relent.

“So,” Jason says, turning to TIm. “You wouldn’t happen to be part of the League of Assassins would you?”

“Can’t say I am,” Tim says, eyes narrowing curiously.

“Are you a Red Robin?”

“Now, that I am. Just Red Robin.”

“Right,” Jason says. “I can never keep track of all the names.”

“Were you… not Robin?”

Jason shakes his head.  “Nope. Your universe, Dad is the… Bat Man right?”

“Bruce isn’t Batman?” Sunny says with shock.

“Nope,” Jason says. “He’s just a normal, run of the mill, not a vigilante guy.”

“Are his parents…” Tim starts.

“Alive?” Sunny finishes.

“Yeah…?” Jason says. “Oh. Oh. Yeah I can see how that could lead him down a different path.”

“No Batman means no Robin,” Sunny says. “So then why did he take you in?”

“Being a child vigilante wasn’t a requirement to my adoption? I don’t know, man. That can’t be the only reason your dad took you in.”

Sunny’s mouth snaps shut as the words sink in, a truth he hasn’t let himself think about since coming back to life. “I will think about that… later.” He shakes his head. “So, wait. That means he didn’t take Tim in as his Robin either.”

“Tim and I met at college. Well, we met at a gala as kids, technically.”

“Weird,” Sunny says. “Weird.” He pauses. “You go to college?”

“Yeah…” Jason says, holding out the word. “You don’t?”

“Didn’t get the chance,” Sunny says, words bitter with old wounds.

“Pause,” Tim says. “You asked me if I was part of the League. Is your Tim part of the League?”

“Trained there since he was a kid,” Jason says. “He was recruited by Talia and was the Demon Head’s apprentice? I don’t know, I’m still wrapping my head around it all still.”

“Talia,” Tim repeats. “Wait… if Bruce isn’t Batman, then Damian—”

“What about Damian?” Jason asks, blinking with confusion.

“Damian exists here?”

“Yeah…? No… no way. Your Bruce met Talia in the Assassin League?!” He shakes his head with disbelief. “I can’t imagine it. Tim’s told me some and I mean, I’ve seen him in action, but I can’t imagine my dad being in a place like that.”

“Huh,” Sunny says. “What is your Dick like here?”

Jason’s brows raise with alarm. “Pardon?”

“Dick…? Dick Grayson?”

“Never heard of him,” Jason says.

“Wait. So you have a Damian. You have a Tim. But you don’t have a Dick?!” Tim says.

“Should I?” Jason asks.

“Dick was the first one Bruce took in,” Sunny says.

“Huh,” Jason says. “Nope. It’s just me and Damian.”

“What about Cass?” Tim asks. “Do you have one here?”

“Yeah, I have a Cass,” Jason says. “Don’t tell me Dad also took her in.”

“Actually, yes,” Sunny says.

“It sounds like your Bruce has an adoption addiction.”

“Tell me about it,” Tim mutters.

“Cass was taken in by the Gordons as a kid, but she grew up in Park Row. That’s where she met Steph.”

“Oh!” Tim says. “You also have a Steph.”

“Please don’t tell me they’re also siblings.” He shudders at the thought.

“Oh, no,” Tim says. “They’re together in our world too.”

“How’d they meet in yours if Cass was… raised by my dad?”

“Well, Steph and I dated first—”

“What?!”

“Is it really that unbelievable?”

“Uhm, yeah. Kinda,” Jason says. “I just can’t imagine my Tim with our Steph. Was she still the Cluemaster’s sidekick?”

“No?!”

“Then Cass isn’t Shadowdancer I’m guessing.”

“Batgirl,” Sunny says.

“...Interesting name.”

“Hey, it was passed down from Babs,” Tim says. “She didn’t choose it.”

“Babs was part of your vigilante family too?!”

“Not technically part of the family but a Bat, yes.”

“Wait… you both were taken in by Bruce. So you’re… brothers?”

“No,” they both say, shutting down the thought with vehemence.

“Jason wasn’t around when I was Bruce’s Robin.”

“Bruce’s Robin,” Jason repeats with confusion. “Not his son?”

Tim flinches at the words and Sunny takes his hand, rubbing his thumb over his knuckles. “No. Not his son.”

“I’m sorry,” Jason says. “I don’t know what I said—”

“Yeah, you don’t,” Sunny says. “So drop it.”

Jason, seeing that this line of conversation needs to shift, changes the topic to something safer. “So. You’re… a dad.”

Sunny’s face softens. “Yeah. I… I never expected it for myself but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The girls mean everything to me.”

“To us,” Tim says. “They’re what brought me and Jason together. We didn’t exactly have the best track record in the past.”

“How so?”

Sunny shifts. “I… may have died and come back to life and then became a crime lord to get revenge against Bruce and the guy who killed me?”

“And also tried to kill me!” Tim chirps.

Jason’s eyes are wide as he gapes at the two. “What?”

“I didn’t— I wasn’t actually gonna,” Sunny says, holding up his hands in surrender as if it makes it any better.

“It’s a different kind of life,” Tim says. “I can’t imagine living in your cushy civilian life as much as you can’t imagine being a Bat.”

“Yeah. I can’t imagine it. How… how old were you…?”

“I was 11 when I was Robin. 15 when I died. 17 when I got back to Gotham.”

“Ugh, teenage angst and murder sprees,” Tim jokes lightly, nudging Sunny.

Jason just continues to stare speechlessly. Before he can say anything else, there’s shouts from the other room.

“Sunny! Daddy! Come in here! Quick!”

Tim and Sunny immediately break into a sprint, running towards the yells.

Moss and Minnie sit at the island with warm cookies in their hands and another Tim in full League robes stares back at them.

“Dimension travel,” Jason says in explanation, panting behind them.

“Of course it is,” the other Tim says flatly. He looks Tim up and down, sizing him up, head cocked and eyes narrowed. “You weren’t with the League.”

“I was,” Tim says, surprising Jason. “Just not as long as you. Trained with Lady Shiva.”

“Hm.” the other Tim turns to his Jason. “When are they leaving?”

“Tim,” Jason admonishes softly.

“No, we really should be finding a way home,” Tim says. “The girls have had enough multiversal mixups for a lifetime.”

As if on cue, a portal begins to open.

“Hey,” Jason says. “Just tell me this. Are you happy?”

Sunny smiles. “The happiest I’ve ever been. We’ve been through hell but… it was worth it in the end. And you?”

Jason looks at his Tim with a soft gaze. “Yeah. I’m happy.”

“Take care of yourself, yeah?” Sunny says, grabbing Moss and Minnie’s hands.

“I’ll try,” Jason says. “You take care of him.”

“Oh, I try,” Sunny says with a laugh.

And with that, they return home.
