Chapter Text
The cold wind swiped through the streets, picking up any fallen leaves from the ground. The sky above was covered up by clouds, gray or darker, indicating that rain was possible soon. You could smell it in the morning autumn air of Hawkins town. Boring as ever.
And with you, the new guy in Hawkins, recently moving in after successfully fleeing from Hungary the country apart of ussr, controlled by a communist dictator. At least youre in a safer place now. Except, with a broken English and a half understanding of the culture of the capitalist country know as the USA. Which is not much better than communism but at least there's no dictatorship here. For now.
As I said before, your English isn't the greatest, the most you know is really the base knowledge of the grammar of English, and some few words and sentences you learned on your own from listening into the radio and the books you guys picked up during the ride of moving in.
The most information your father had told you about the place that it was in Indiana, Hawkins, somewhere at 2886 Cornwallis Road. The so on so most boring town where nothing ever happens. You guys already moved in mostly, the furniture has already arrived or you guys will buy it there. The house itself isn't very big, nothing too fancy, but this was a proper house and not a simple flat you lived in before moving. At least there's a nice backyard and a front yard, which is nice you suppose, maybe now you guys can actually grow some plants instead of buying.
The house was big enough for the three of you, and your black cat that you insisted on wanting when you were much younger and somehow actually got it instead of being told a million times like before that you can't have pets inside apartments, which was just an excuse for your parents for a good while until you found out that this specific complex didn't have any problem with pets being kept as long it stays clean there.
But nevermind that train of thought, the car ride has been going on for 2 hours now at this time you could've been outside of Hungary but no, here, you're not even out of the state yet. Getting bored and now eager to see the new home, and the new room that you could now freely decorate without any restrictions, you leaned closer to the front row seats where your mother in the passenger seat and your father in the driver's seat was sitting at.
"Édesanyám, hát mikor érünk már oda? Több mint két órája megyünk, hát hol a faszomba vagyunk?" "(mother, when do we get there? We've been going for more than two hours now, where the fuck are we.)" You asked, a tone louder than intended which got you a glare from your mother through the rear view mirror.
"Kis fiam ne elégedetlenkedjél, majd oda érünk ha ott vagyunk, és vigyázz a szádra mielőtt olyat adok neked hogy lesz miért káromkodnod." "(Son, stop complaining, we'll get there once we are there and watch your language before I give you something to swear about.)" She took a drag of her cigarette before blowing the smoke out of the rolled down mirror, a song you didn't recognize was blasting in the radio that your father was listening into.
You sighed, rolling your eyes that got you another death glare from your mother which you just ignored and leaned back looking out of the window at the passing scenery. You were almost lost deep in thought before you saw a sign you guys passed by, with 'welcome to Hawkins' written on it.
You had arrived. Now you just need to get to the house too. And use the weekend to move in properly and set everything up. Hopefully Hawkins will treat you right. But what can you expect at this point?
Just another 10 minutes of driving you guys had arrived to the street. Passing by a few houses your father had stopped in front of a particular one, a bit run down, and many boxes are simply sitting outside on the front yard. How weird, Americans don't have fences, or just few ones that can barely protect. Shocking how much trust they have with each other.
But that thought soon stopped when your mother opened the door of the car, getting out, and so did your father, so you of course did the same.
Finally getting fresh air instead of the smoke that had pent up inside the car cause of your mother, the cold autumn breeze felt great. Not too cold but not hot either. Just what you needed.
"Szedd a lábad, Y/N. Még be kell pakolnunk a házba." "(Pick up the pace, Y/N. We still need to move our things into the house.)" Said your mother, putting out her cigarette she threw it on the ground, stepping on it to make sure its out, before walking to the back of the car to get their personal belongings out of the trunk.
"Megyek már!" "(I'm coming!)" you raised your tone, almost getting more than a glare from your mother who just picked up her own luggage and her backpack that she threw over her shoulder, expecting you to do the same with your own things, before walking towards the house with the keys inside her hand.
And so did you do the same, along with your father who actually had more stuff than you so he simply asked for help from you, and you complied, you only had two bags. One for your clothes and the other is for your every other small belongings like posters, more important books, your headphones, a few decorations you hadn't thrown out before moving.
You picked up the carrier for your cat, with her still inside it, she quickly woke up at the feeling of her carrier being moved. You just smiled, feeling great that you were finally oit of that hell hole that you were supposed to call home. A new start. Which you weren't the most sure if you should be afraid of the new environment or excited of the kind of people you'll meet here.
Following your mother into the house as she unlocked the front door. Stepping in, the old wooden floor creaked under ya'lls feet, you took slow steps inside to just take it all in. Taking a deep breath, the smell of old wood and dust hit your nose immediately, even irritating it a bit which almost made you sneeze. Your parents were a bit faster, they just wanted to get their stuff inside the house before anything's get stolen, they put their stuff down into the dining room.
The first room you made your way into as soon as stepping inside was the living room,a bit more to the right, possibly, as it was completely empty, not even an old couch or anything in it. The windows were slightly dirty, the light barely came inside. Maybe cause the sun wasn't out because of the dark clouds overhead but that wasn't the point.
Looking to the left was the dinning room, the floor of it was covered in tiles, one or two was even cracked. The room was just simply connected to the living room, no wall was separating it. In the middle of it was an old, rusty wooden table left here by the older owners of the home, with a few chairs set in place around it. Looking like it would and possibly will break the second you put your weight down on it. On top of the table is where your parents had put down their own stuff on, so you just decided to do the same, deciding to pack out later on, and for now just explore the house.
You placed down the cat carrier onto the tiled floor, opening the door of it to let out your cat. Though when she didn't move out and only let out a quiet meow, you kneeled down, checking inside only to see her in the far end if the carrier. Aw poor thing, she's probably distressed. It's common. You knew cats, and many other pets get like that when the environment suddenly changes, even humans do that. No animal likes sudden changes, no one does.
So you understood she needs space to get used to the new house and everything around her, maybe you'll put some food out later to get her out of the carrier more quickly. But for now you'll just look around the house more.
Connected to the dining room, was the kitchen, separated by a half wall, and completely separated from the living room and the hallway by a wall. The door leading into it was just a frame, with no door in it. Standing up you walked inside the kitchen. Seeing that there were kitchen counters in it and also some old rusty shelves that looked it was about to fall apart, something that will be worth buying new of. There wasn't much else there. A window over the built in sink, no oven not even a fridge was left there. Damn greedy.
With not much esle to see there you walked out of the kitchen, back to the front door and from there you walked down the hallway that was connected to the living room, which you can guess led to your room, your parents room, bathroom and maybe the garage.
The wall had vertical wood coverage on it, nothing interesting just very different than what you were used to back in the apartment in hungary, where the wall was bricks and concrete, not simply wood and who knows what weak material.
Opening the first door you saw in the hallway to your right, you opened into the bathroom, tiles covering the floor and half of the wall, around waist height. There was a dirty sink, and old bath tub and a toilet inside the room, simply what you'd expect from a bathroom. Except much dirtier and dusty... and empty.. like everything else inside the house. For now at least. But there wasn't even a mirror in yet, which looks like is something you guys will need to buy, same with shower curtains, and also curtains for all the other windows in the house.
Walking out of the bathroom, you entered the door on the left side of the hallway, a bit more down than the bathroom, twisting the door knob open, the room wasn't anything particular. Probably a bedroom or something like that as it was mostly empty and the boxes that was inside it probably had a bed frame in it that was waiting to be assembled. Interesting. You wondered if this is gonna be your room or the last you saw in the hallway.
Wandering out of the dusty room, you made your way to the last door you saw, on the right side, twisting it open, you saw a yet another completely empty room, with a few boxes which you can again only guess were bed frames. The room was significantly smaller than the other bedroom. Yup, this definitely was your own room. You stayed inside this one just a few more minutes, scanning down the room with your eyes, already making plans of how you could make this room ten times more cool than a plain basic bedroom.
Taking a few steps inside, you made your way to the window to look out at the view, seeing into the small backyard of your new home. At least fences were covering the back. Unlike the front yard.
As you left your room, you see that this wasn't actually the end of the hallway and there was a smaller way you could head down to the left, which lead to another door yet again. Ah so this is where the garage was.
Opening up the door you already saw your father's car parked into it, he probably parked in while you were looking around in the house, you just simply didn't notice. But you do notice one thing, there was an already built in washing machine. Or, you can guess its one because it's very different fron the washing machine you were used to. Well thats cool at least. But you really need to start helping your parents unpack and assemble the already brought here furniture before your mother starts complaining she's the only one working in this household.
With already being late afternoon, and with two successfully assembled bedframes with the mattress neatly put inside was done so you guys have somewhere to sleep at of the nights before getting more stuff in and more comfortable in the new environment. You already brought your bags inside your room, and even your cat was willing to go out of her carrier and explore cautiously. Especially with the help of cat food. Which was the only kind of food in the house so far which meant going out to downtown later on to grab something to eat. And maybe you could also see a few stores you could check out. Perchance even see some cool people around. Just maybe.
With it being Saturday, your school starts on Monday of course, its a bit weird to not go to school on a Saturday as you are more used to that, but its actually very pleasant, you feel more rested even though you and your family just assembled a few furnitures together. It was very quiet, we'll not too quiet, something you'd expect that kids would be out as its not even that dark yet and its not even cold.
Spoke too soon because as you're looking out the window from the living room, out to the front yard you see four kids passing by on bikes, yelling at each other for some nonsense you didn't have any context in. Oh you were just hoping they weren't your neighbors, annoying loud kids? You had met enough of those back in Hungary.
Never mind that thought when your father yelled at you from the kitchen to get ready because you guys will be heading out soon. And to not get more than just a simple yell you went back to your own room to search through your clean clothes you could wear for out tonight, debating if you should go in some more cooler clothes or be in something casual at first.
You went with something more casual to save the cooler clothes for when school starts, so after getting ready you went to the front door to wait for your parents to get ready but im reality they weren't even starting to get ready, its been 10 minutes and they were the one who were yelling at you a while ago, which made you frown but sighed and controlled your face to a more neutral one and just decided to wait for them in patience.
After a good another 12 minutes they finally got ready, heading out the front door and getting into the car, your father was scanning the map of Hawkins to see where is downtown and where they could possibly get dinner at. A good 5 minutes passed before your father put fown the map with a gruff and started up the car, rolling out of the garage, he drove through and out the street, going around by memory (horrible decision but what can you do with a stubborn father.)
And you guys indeed got lost, but its fine, with your mother being somewhat of an extrovert she asked help from a passing by mother and daughter, quickly getting the right directions to downtown, and it wasn't even taht far, you guys just took the wrong turn once which is what got ya'll lost, but hey at least now you guys are in down town.
Rolling around you guys found a nice looking diner, still open, it could be a nice try. Getting out of the car, your eyes scanned through the streets and you saw an arcade just pass the road, in the other side. You saw the same four kid bike to the arcade, still screaming at each other as they ran into the arcade. That's a place you gotta check out.
Your mother saying your name got you out of your mind snapping you back to reality, you and your parents wandered into the diner.
The diner wasn't anything crazy, though the thing that surprised you the most, and also your parents were the portions. They were so big, and most of the things in the menu were very sugary and sweet, something you weren't exactly the most used to, but it was still very delicious.
The drive back wasn't too interesting either, it was early night, around 20:00 (8pm) clock when you guys got back. As the night came around, the sun set soon too, as summer was ending, the days were getting shorter and shorter. The air was refreshing, the cold was biting at your ear and cheek. It was a very, very pleasant feeling. The cold was comforting.
Wanting bit of an alone time, to just be alone with your thoughts, you went out to the front yard, standing with your arms crossed. Just breathing in the spicy cold air of the autumn night. Wind breezing the trees, owls already awakex and crickets created a great background noise. The street lamps were turned on, warm light illuminating the the neighboor hood. How comforting.
Pulling out your hands from your pocket, you got out a cigarette from the small box that you had previously stolen from your mother, and had a loghter on your own at least. Bad habit but the feeling was very calming. Trying to get a light a few times, you lightened your fag, took a bigger drag from it, the smoke burned your lungs in a familiar way, exhaling the smoke through your nose. Ah, Some peace and quiet.
Spoke too soon. Again. As the same patch of kids went by on bikes, except only 3 this time. Not yelling at least this time. One of them stopped at the house to the left of your house.
"See you tomorrow Dustin!" Yelled one of the boys, to the other one who had stopped at that house, as the remaining two boys just biked through the street, saying byes to their friend.
Dustin huh? So that's your neighbor. Well one of them. Hm, cool. He doesn't seem too insufferable so it may be worth a try to at least get buddy-buddy with the kid. You took another drag of your cig, looking where the kid was at, setting his bike into the garage, and when leaving, he finally saw you. Just giving a toothy grin, he waved his hand. You waved back lazily, before the kid walked into his home.
Cool kid. You finished off your cigarette, putting it out and threw it into the ash tray that was already outside on the front porch table. Your mother really likes her cigarette breaks. You walked back inside, with not much else to do, you will get some of your stuff for your bed, like blankets and at least one pillow.
You went to shower and change into some pajamas, with barely anything to do at this time, you might as well go to bed early to wake up earlier. Getting out your blanket and a pillow from your bag, and one quick good night to your parents and basic hygiene acts before heading to bed. The second your head hit the pillow, and you looked up at the ceiling, you noticed the amount of spiderwebs that was up there. A reminder you should definitely clean up even more tomorrow. But with that train of thought you soon fell asleep.
Tomorrow hopefully will be as easy as today.
