Work Text:

The room was silent, only the distant rush of the sea filling the darkness. The air was heavy, thick with the scent of sweat and sex. Somewhere outside, palm trees groaned under the weight of the wind as Edward sank down onto the mattress beside his newly wedded wife. Bella lay next to him, still half-wrapped in the blanket, her breathing slow and shallow. Then suddenly, her body jerked. A sound escaped her lips—sharp, startled—like someone who had touched fire.

Edward immediately straightened, every nerve alert. Her face was tense, her breath uneven. She pressed a trembling hand against her lower abdomen as if something inside her hurt.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice tight with alarm.
“I… I don’t know. It feels like something inside me is pulling, twisting… like—” She broke off with a gasp, her fingers clutching at the sheets. Her eyes were wide, gleaming with confusion and fear. “It burns. Edward, I—I think I have a fever.”

He leaned forward, his cold fingers brushing her forehead. The heat radiating from her skin was unbearable—not human warmth, not simple fever-sweat, but something deeper, something alive and wrong. Her heart was racing, pounding too fast, too strong. A surge of dread swept through him.
“No, no, no,” he whispered, shaking his head. “That can’t be. Bella, you have to breathe. Stay calm.”
“I can’t!” she gasped, pain twisting her voice. “It—it hurts!”

Her body tensed and arched off the bed as if an unseen force had seized her. She doubled over, arms wrapped around her midsection, trembling violently. The pain came in waves, each more powerful than the last. Tears welled in her eyes, slipping down her flushed cheeks.
“What’s happening to me?” she cried, her voice ragged with terror.

Edward stepped back without meaning to, frozen in disbelief. He could hear every beat of her heart, see the way her skin changed—the subtle darkening beneath her veins, the unnatural shimmer beneath the surface. Panic clawed at his mind. There was only one thought echoing in him, cold and horrifying: This is my venom. My fault.

“Oh God… what have I done?”
The words left him like a ghost of sound, a confession to the shadows. Bella probably didn’t even hear them. He sank to his knees beside the bed, his hands trembling uncontrollably. His mind scrambled for logic, for a reason that made sense—but none existed. There had been no bite, no wound, no blood spilled. And yet she lay before him, her body betraying every human boundary, changing before his eyes.

Bella moaned softly, her voice cracking with fear. “Edward… please. Do something. It feels like I’m… breaking apart.”
He grabbed her hand, clutching it desperately. Her skin was hot, feverish, pulsing with life—too much life.
“I wanted to protect you,” he whispered. “I controlled everything. I thought—” His words failed him. He looked at her—at the tension in her muscles, the shivers racking her frame, the sheen of sweat on her brow. His own still heart constricted painfully, something close to panic taking hold.

“No… this can’t happen. Not like this,” he murmured, pacing the room in helpless agitation. His movements were a blur, frantic and useless. Every sound from her—the shallow gasps, the broken moans—stabbed through him like knives. Then came a sound so raw it stopped him cold: not quite a scream, but a strangled, guttural cry that vibrated with agony. It shattered him.

He rushed back to her, fell to his knees, and wrapped his arms around her trembling body. She was burning, writhing against his hold, her muscles locked in unbearable tension. Edward bent over her, his voice breaking as he whispered, “I’m here. I’m here, Bella. Please… forgive me.”
Her fingers found his, weak and trembling. Her grip was faint, fading. Her eyes, wide and shining with tears, met his—filled with confusion, terror, and a desperate plea.
“Edward… I don’t want to die,” she breathed, barely audible.

His breath caught. For a moment, the world seemed to stop. Only the furious beating of her heart filled the room—so loud, so powerful, so unnatural. It was fighting against something unseen, something inevitable. And in that instant, he knew. Deep inside, beneath all denial, he knew what was happening. The venom that lay dormant in every one of his cells had found its way into her—accidentally, irreversibly.

“No, Bella,” he rasped, his voice raw with anguish. “You’re not dying. You’re not… you’ll live. Just… differently.”
She didn’t understand. Perhaps she couldn’t. Her gaze began to lose focus, her expression softening not with relief, but surrender. The pain didn’t vanish—it changed, became something else, deeper and quieter. Her body was no longer just suffering; it was transforming.

Edward stayed at her side, motionless except for the trembling of his hands. His mind was chaos, his heart an echo of panic and grief. He could see it happening, the subtle shifts beneath her skin, the strange calm settling over her features. He wanted to scream, to undo it, to tear time itself apart, but all he could do was whisper.
“I wanted to love you,” he murmured brokenly, “not… this.”

He drew her closer, pressed his forehead to hers. The feverish heat that had consumed her was fading now, replaced by something colder, steadier. Outside, the sea thundered against the cliffs, relentless and eternal. Its rhythm filled the room like the pulse of the world itself. And in that rhythm, in that terrible silence that followed, Edward understood the truth in full. He had crossed the line he had sworn never to cross—the boundary between love and destruction.

And as he held her still form in his arms, he realized that love, as he had known it, no longer existed. Whatever lay beside him now—what his Bella was becoming—was something born of that love, and of his own irreversible mistake.
