A bad dream

Summary:

Inspired by a click & drag here's a small angsty and kinda fluffy Melliz oneshot

Work Text:

Meliodas walked through a destroyed Danafor, dead bodies, humans and dragons alike, paved the streets, houses laid in ruins. It was a horrible sight but what shook him the most was the pierced body of the girl he loved leaning on a wall. He didn’t fight the demon who killed her, he destroyed him, hurrying to Liz’ side, hoping she would somehow be okay. He knew there was no hope but he couldn’t help it.
Meliodas stood before the pink-haired girl who was bleeding out of her chest. When she didn’t move he painfully realized. I am too late.

She then lifted her head a little bit and spoke with a broken voice, a faint smile on her face:
“Don't be sad.
All people… eventually die.
Promise me… Meliodas
You can… forget who you are…
but never forget the principles that you stand by…”
She took a deep breath
“We’ll see each other again!”, she whispered with a smile on her bloody face, breathing her last breath, her head falling onto her chest once again, for all eternity this time.

Meliodas could feel hot tears running down his face. He leaned down to his girlfriend, hugging her in a last desperate attempt to not acknowledge that she’s dead but at the same time knowing exactly that there’s nothing he could do, that she’s gone, forever. This generation’s Elizabeth would never come back to him.

Meliodas woke up with a start. He was sitting upright on a stool in his living room, a few empty bottles of ale in front of him on the table he was sleeping on until a few seconds ago. He looked around. This was his home. His gaze wandered to the open window. There was a thunderstorm outside and for a second he wondered if the thunder was what woke him up but then he remembered the dream. A shiver went down his spine and his hands began trembling.

He had to check on her, he had to make sure.

He didn’t bother putting on any lights on his way to their bedroom and stumbled over nothing a few times because his feet just wouldn’t listen to him. He stopped in front of the bedroom door, scared of what he would find behind it. Deep inside he knew it was a dream, he knew she would be peacefully sleeping in their bed but he couldn’t shake off the fear and it ate away at him. He then plugged up his courage and pushed the door open.

She was there, of course she was. He took a few steps towards her sleeping figure.

“Liz?”, he whispered. No answer.
“Liz!”, he called her, raising his voice a little now. Liz opened her eyes slowly and when she saw her lover standing in the door she called him over, saying he has drunken enough and should come to sleep already.
She sat up when he made no attempt to follow her request and was about to scold him because he woke her up but when she saw his devastated face she forgot how to speak for a moment.
He came nearer, his arms reaching out for her and when he finally reached the end of the bed and got a hold of Liz he just collapsed onto her, forcing her to lie down once again.

“Geez, what’s wrong with you?”, Liz tried to sound playfully comforting when she was really hurting inside, seeing Meliodas act like this. She rustled through his hair, then had her hands wander to his back, hugging him tightly.
“I’m so glad you’re fine…”, he mumbled into her breasts, where his head rested, softly fondling them. She couldn’t even bring herself to scold him as she knew she only wanted to make her believe he was fine. She'd let him this time. This time only. She would do anything to make him feel better right now and if that was all it took that was fine.

“Hey, Meliodas”, she said. “Look at me”
Meliodas did as he was told and before he could react Liz placed her hands on the back of his head, pulling him closer and placed a soft kiss on his forehead.

“Don’t try to keep secrets from me, you hear?”, she said, softly smiling at him.
Finally Meliodas smiled again, an honest smile this time, as he nodded.

“I guess I got no choice with a girl like you”, he sighed but his voice still trembling.
