Work Text:
Lava couldn’t take his eyes off Wave as they walked back to the resort.
Even if he tried, he couldn’t stop thinking about how beautiful and cute his boyfriend was.
He knew that before, he had treated him with irony, aggression, arrogance, and even taken advantage of him to get rid of work, but he regretted that very much now.
Wave seemed to be someone to be cared for and protected, not exploited.
Wave had become everything to him in a short time.
He meant so much to Lava that now he couldn’t even sleep without him by his side, without his body to hold.
“Are you listening to me, Lava?” Suddenly Wave pulled his hand and looked at him.
What? Wave was saying something? Since when?
Lava hadn’t imagined that Wave could be bothered to say anything when his mouth was full of rice cakes they had bought at the market.
Lava smiled shyly.
“Sorry, I was distracted.”
“Distracted with what?”
Lava subtly raised his eyebrow and looked at his boyfriend with a mischievous gaze.
“With my boyfriend.”
“You’re crazy.”
“Yes, I’m crazy about my boyfriend.” Lava suddenly jumped on top of Wave and held his face, attacking him with several kisses. “So crazy that I want to kiss you.”
Wave began to laugh between kisses and tried to stop his crazy and out-of-control boyfriend.
“Lava, stop!”
“No, I want more.”
“Lava!” Wave scolded, but it was hard to sound serious when he was clearly enjoying it.
“Come here.”
Yes, Lava could admit, he really was crazy and out of control, but how could he act any other way when his boyfriend was so cute, had such soft cheeks, and smelled so good?
He wanted Wave all to himself.
Lava continued giving kisses and more kisses all over his boyfriend’s face, as if it were something so addictive that it was impossible to stop.
And he really was addicted to Wave.
Wave was…
“Darwin!”
The pronunciation of the name Darwin spoken loudly and excitedly made the couple turn around, and a chill ran down Lava’s spine.
In front of them was a man.
Not just any man or another island civilian.
It was someone who, from miles away, you could tell came from somewhere else and had very high status.
He was dressed formally, had an elegant posture, and an air of someone who held power.
“Darwin, I finally found you.”
The man took quick steps forward, but before he could get any closer, Lava stepped in front of Wave.
He would protect his boyfriend.
It didn’t matter who that man was, he was still a stranger.
“Don’t come any closer,” Lava warned.
The man stopped and seemed to analyze him from head to toe, not with superiority, just with caution.
“I know you’re protecting Darwin, and I thank you for that, but I’m not an enemy,” there seemed to be sincerity in his voice. “I’m Darwin’s boyfriend.”
Lava swallowed the last sentence as if a huge stone were going down his throat.
He felt slightly dizzy, as if he were going to lose his breath at any moment.
But even though his feet were almost sinking into the ground, he didn’t back down.
He never could, because Wave was his boyfriend.
“Don’t talk nonsense! Who could believe a stranger like you?!”
But the man didn’t back down either.
“I can prove it.”
He took his phone from his pocket, slid the screen, and held it up to Lava’s face, forcing him to look at a picture of that man kissing Wave’s cheek.
Then he turned to Wave. “Darwin, believe me. I know you can feel what I feel.”
Lava was furious, blood boiling.
No matter what he saw or heard, he wouldn’t accept it.
There was no way he could accept such absurdities.
He would protect Wave and what they had together.
“Wave, you don’t have to feel anything. He—”
Lava’s voice was interrupted.
Wave stepped out from behind him and took a step forward.
Lava wanted to grab his hand and stop him, but he couldn’t.
He simply stood still.
“I feel that what you’re saying is true.”
Wave’s words almost made him choke.
“Wave…”
“Lava,” he looked at him. “I’m sorry.”
“What do you mean, you’re sorry?!”
He shouted, shouted louder. “What are you saying!?”
Lava wanted to jump on Wave, grab him by the shoulders, and shake him.
Wave must be confused, in shock, that’s why he was saying those crazy things.
He took a step forward and raised his arm toward his boyfriend, but before he could touch him, the man intervened. Blocked him.
“He doesn’t belong to you. I thank you for saving him, but Darwin was never yours, he was only lent to you,” he said, everything hitting Lava so hard that he didn’t have time to recover, only to watch. “Darwin, come with me.”
The man stretched out his hand toward Wave, and he didn’t seem to think before taking it, firmly, confidently.
He held it the same way he always held Lava’s hand.
“Let’s go.”
“Wave!” Lava shouted. “You can’t go!”
Wave turned on his heels, but before leaving, looked briefly over his shoulder.
“Goodbye, Lava.”
And Wave started walking away.
“Wave!”
Then Lava woke up.
He sat up in bed with wide eyes, his heart beating so fast and hard that he thought it would burst from his chest, sweat running from his face down his neck, hot and nervous.
“Wave…” The name came trembling from his lips.
Fear rushed through him, and he immediately turned to the side, but the small space that should have been occupied by a slim, graceful body was empty.
It was as if someone were trying to strangle him.
And the fear intensified. A thousand times. A thousand times more.
Lava got out of bed, legs trembling, but even weak, he rushed out of the room, fast, as if running from a nightmare.
And all he could think about was Wave.
Wave couldn’t have left him, couldn’t have disappeared.
They had been fine before going to sleep.
Wave had teased him, played with his neck, and even given him a goodnight kiss.
Wave… He… He… No… He couldn’t… Wave never… Wave…
“Lava?”
Lava’s heart stopped for a second, his feet froze on the floor.
Wave was right in front of him, just coming out of the kitchen, his eyes looking a little worried.
“Lava, are you okay? Did something happen?”
There was no time for answers.
Lava inhaled sharply, and within seconds closed the small distance between them.
He wrapped his arms around Wave, hugging him tightly, desperately, breathlessly, consumed by fear.
He needed to be sure that this was really Wave, that he still existed in his world, that he wasn’t an illusion, that he was still his.
Wave returned the hug and rubbed Lava’s back up and down, calmly, unhurriedly.
Even without knowing what had happened, he knew Lava needed comfort and affection.
Wave always understood him so well.
“It’s okay, Lava,” Wave said, with his sweet and gentle voice. “Everything’s okay.”
Lava held him tighter and buried his face in the curve of his neck.
“I… I had a nightmare… It was so… so real.”
It wasn’t the first time he had such a nightmare.
After they finally discovered Wave’s true identity, nightmares had become part of many of his nights.
“You… you were leaving… You… going with him… I couldn’t…”
Nothing he said seemed to make sense, no one could understand what it was about.
No one except Wave.
The younger one gently pulled away from Lava, just enough to look at the man in front of him.
Wave could understand.
He understood everything that had to do with Lava.
“Look at me,” he said, and Lava obeyed, even if hesitantly.
“Pay attention to what I’m going to say. I’m not going to leave you, Lava. I’m not going to disappear, and I’m certainly not going to leave your side.”
“But—”
“There’s no but.”
His words were firm and confident, but Lava was still trembling with fear.
“I know you’re afraid because of my past, I am too. I just found out I’m a prince, and I don’t know what to do with that.”
And that was what scared Lava.
His Wave was a prince, from another country, from a world completely different from his own.
And he was just a civilian, a troublemaker, with a police record, someone who had done many reckless things and couldn’t even take care of himself.
How could Wave want to stay with someone like him?
Wave had the possibility of a better life, and someone better at his side.
But he…
“But I love you.”
Lava swallowed hard, his legs almost giving out.
“I may be a prince and this Darwin, but before all that, I’m Wave. I’m your Wave, and I’ll always be your Wave.”
A tear slid gently down his cheek, and Wave wiped it away with a warm, gentle smile.
“I’m sorry.”
Lava held Wave’s face and apologized, because he truly felt guilty.
He felt guilty for scaring Wave, for making him see him that way, the needy, fragile, and fearful part of Lava that he never let anyone see.
But he felt that he could allow himself to be that way for Wave.
“It’s okay, Lava.”
Wave smiled and pressed his forehead against his.
“We’re going to be okay.”
Lava really wanted to believe that.
The two stayed in the kitchen for a while longer, until Lava could calm down and Wave was sure he was at least somewhat at peace.
After many hugs and comforting caresses, the two returned to the bedroom.
They lay side by side, as they did every night.
Lava pulled the sheet over them and wrapped his arms around Wave.
He brought him as close as he could and held him tightly.
“Don’t go anywhere,” he whispered to Wave, as he nestled his head in his soft hair.
Wave smiled.
“Never.”
Then Lava fell asleep.
This time, he didn’t have any nightmares, because he fell asleep believing that despite all the obstacles and problems, everything would be fine as long as Wave kept loving him and never let go of his hand.
