“Why did you accept?”
Flins didn’t look up from his plate. “The pact required it.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the only answer that matters.”
“No.” Rerir set down his wine glass, the liquid inside glowed faintly. “The pact required someone. It didn’t have to be you. So I ask again, why did you accept?”
A centuries-old pact binds two old houses — one of light and one of ruin. To preserve the land against encroaching storms, every few generations a Lightkeeper must wed the Cursed One who dwells beyond the sea. It is not a union of affection but an old rite meant to keep the heart of divinity contained.
Their marriage begins as an obligation suffused with dread and slowly turns into something neither faith nor curse can name.
Is it devotion or the slow surrender of a captive heart?
