Work Text:
Una steps into Phil’s office. “Hey,” she says. Phil gives her a nod. “What are you working on?”
Phil glances up from his computer. “Just more research.”
“Anything promising?” Una rounds the corner to look over Phil’s shoulder, then frowns. “Why are you reading about hair regrowth protocols?”
“It’s for Chris.”
Una’s expression turns from confusion to incredulity. “Chris can’t speak or move, and you’re thinking about his hair?”
“Yes, I’m thinking about his hair,” Phil shoots back. “Because I’ve spoken with the best specialists in and out of Starfleet, and there is nothing anyone can do right now. Maybe in a few months, when he’s stronger, but not now.”
Una just blinks at him, confused. “I don’t understand.”
“I can’t give him back his voice, or his legs, or his command right now. I’m a doctor, and I can’t do a damned thing to help my best friend get better,” Phil says, voice rising with every word. “But this I can do. I can give him his hair back, and it’s not much but maybe it will make his current nightmare just a tiny bit more bearable.” Phil stares righteously into Una’s eyes as he stands. “So back off.”
