He slowed his breathing. Counted to three in silence, steadying his nerves. Then opened the door carefully, the barrel pointed low ready to lift in a heartbeat.
Outside, the world was a pale desert under the glow of the fake lights in the sky. And right there on the porch he saw him.

Tall, thin, his face hidden by shadows and black stitches across his mouth. His clothes were stained with dried blood, and around his neck hung a yellow coat.He stood in front of the door, breathing hard, body swaying between standing and collapsing. And then, without a word, he fell.
The Protagonist ran forward and caught him before he hit the floor. His body was burning hot like the heat of the world itself was eating him alive from the inside.
