The World's Fair / The Bargain

Summary:

I had a thought about writing music in the tradition of Will Wood or Bo Burnham and this was my attempt, so I guess this is kind of a fanwork of them. Also feels a bit punkish to me, although perhaps not punk enough to call it such. Original lyrics without an accompaniment, I guess you could call it poetry but I did have a cadence that I was thinking about when writing. if I ever get back into music again, I might try to do a recording. If anybody does end up singing it, lmk because it would be cool to see how other people think it would be sung.

Work Text:

Welcome to the Carnival,

Come and shake my hand

We’ve signed a pact you can’t redact

To see a place so grand.

Food is in abundance, the fun is off the walls

There’s golden gleam proceeding from the cracks of every hall

So look inside and peep the shows

Until you’ve got to go

There’s bits and bobs and everything

From all across the land

Welcome to the circus ain’t it grand.

We go out and we find it and we drag it all back home

We prop it up and throw it out, like all we’ve ever known

We find freaks and geeks and all the meeks cursed from before their birth,

And wring ‘em out and show em off until they’ve lost their worth

There’s many from arabia,

Whose homes we’ve turned to sand

Welcome to the circus ain’t it grand.

Put a dime into the minstral, she’ll play a song of sultry lust

Pick your card and play it out until your bank goes bust

Pick your cause and play it loud ‘til everything is gone

Pick your song and sing it, worry not it won’t be long

Wander where you wonder, every path is free,

Except for those not meant for you, those paths for him and me.

Do all that you love girl, keep on dreaming son

Just you keep on singing, say that you’re the one.

We offer types of merriment

That you can’t even stand.

Welcome to the circus ain’t it grand.
