Crossroad Country

Summary:

More angsty song lyrics/spoken word poetry from the POV of someone trying to ape will wood and maybe neo-folk at the same time. my attempt has thusfar been to make the songs as subtle as a sledgehammer; so far, I've been liking the results. hope y'all like them too.

if you end up setting to music/performing, let me know because I'd love to hear it turned into something real.

Work Text:

Sir it’s nice to meet you, oh can I shake your hand?

There’s tons of tales I’ve heard of you, from far across the land.

Tales of things you’d do for me, so I can do them too;

Tales of things you’ve done for us, things I had never knew.

Sir it’s great to see you, I’ve heard so much about

all the things you’ve conjured up, all the things you’ve figured out.

They say that you’re the dreamer, the one who understands.

That the devil here’s a coming, that there’s Satan in these lands.

We walked across the forest, then we cut it down.

We walked across the farmland and trampled it to ground.

We listened to your warnings, for you saw things from our view.

You warned us of the devil, but the devil he is you.

I heard you in the shipyards, they called you at the docks;

Every man cried out for you while they were in the stocks.

They begged and pleaded for the watchman, the one who’d fell the marsh!

They pleaded with the devil, and to his tune they marched.

You told us to forget our past and raise a business king,

You told us that to free us we must forget how to sing.

Sir you know I love you, sir you know it well!

Sir you are my king, after all you’re the king of hell.

They built your roads and sailed your ships and carried forth your boasts!

It was a shame that oh so many rammed their ship into the coasts.

But other boats were sailing, they used the ocean too;

The innocents you mystified ‘till all we saw was blue.

Sir the magic you have worked on us, to take away the hurt,

The way you walked above the ground while we were still in dirt.

While we were working greasy you worked to send us into space;

Sir please come and help us, satan help our troubled race.

Oh sir no don’t you listen, don’t you hear another word

disregard my chirping as if I were just a bird

disregard my speaking as oh I say too much

disregard it devil, oh as I regard your touch.

They say that you’re a dealer, that you’re the magic man

They say that you’re the healer, your money helps you understand

They say that you’re the chosen one, the one who’ll build us new

They say that you’re alone, but the devil has his crew.

The world it keeps revolving, it’s just dancing on your palm

The boats they keep on stopping, those are jilted by your psalm.

I hear only brilliance, I hear only shock and awe,

I hear only satan oh great devil do you call

Sir I once heard a man who went up to the moon,

You sold us mars and tell us all that we’ll be going soon

I’m so glad you’ll watch for us until that fateful day,

Waiting with the devil as we against the devil pray
