Chapter 1: Lunch break

Chapter Text

“-And that’s the bell! Time for your lunch break, everyone!” Alphys said as she just finished explaining a simple introduction to angles on the blackboard. The whole class went scrambling to the exit door, eager to play outside. Kris stood up from their desk and hurried over to Susie who was reaching the door carrying a lunch bag. “Yo Kris! Wanna make a cool castle out of dirt?” Susie asked. Kris nodded as the two walked fast past the other students and to the back doors which lead to the back playgrounds. Susie put on her hat and so did Kris, it was a particularly sunny day despite it being autumn in Hometown. The playground was small, but it had lots of options for the children. A swing set, slide, turning things, and plenty of spaces for everyone to sit and talk.

Kris always enjoyed hanging out with Susie under the shady trees, making castles out of dirt and sticks, and eating the occasional apple that fell from the trees. They sat down and watched their other classmates run and play together, as the leaves fell down from the trees and onto the ground, making shapes in the dirt.
“So, you wanna start making the castle? Our dirt city needs one!” Susie started to gather pieces of dirt up and place them into an unknown shape, making the base of the castle. Kris nodded and found some sticks on the ground to add to the shape, helping Susie. “What are you guys doing?” A voice walked quietly to the two children, and hooves stopped at the foot of Kris and Susie’s dirt town. Susie looked up in surprise “Oh, hi Noelle, we’re making a dirt city.” “That’s cool!” Noelle bent her legs down so she could help.
“How about some leaves for the roofs?” Noelle carefully put some yellow leaves over the top of the small houses. The three of them continued to build until the inevitable bell rang throughout the school. “Aw, I guess it’s time to go back for class…”
Noelle sighed and dusted the dirt off of her dress. She joined the other kids in slowly returning to class, sad for lunch to end but eager for home time. Kris and Susie left their city where it was. “Dang, I guess we’ll add more tomorrow, hey Kris? Maybe Noelle can help us, and maybe even that bird lee kid too” Susie put her hands in her pockets and walked back inside. Kris soon followed, tired from the day.
