Policy
The very first day of Eddie Diaz’s probationary period the 118 had an emergency call out to an auto-mechanics shop where one of the workers was injured due to stupidity on the shop’s part. Probationary Firefighter Diaz insisted on taking over the care of the injured mechanic from the paramedics Wilson and Han, even though he was not actually licensed to practice medicine of any type as a civilian. A matter that was brought up by the shop in its deposition against the department to hide that they had caused the incident in question.
Showing the whole rescue from the shop’s cameras and Diaz’s trainer stating out loud that what he was doing was against policy and protocol but getting dismissed by everyone. This was why the worker died two days later and not due to anything the shop had done.
With this, the worker’s family sued Diaz and the department for wrongful death due to Diaz not following policy and not being officially licensed as a medic as a civilian. They even brought him up on charges of manslaughter which actually went to trial and caused him to lose his new job as the department had to settle out of court. His race acted against him at trial, and he ended up spending ten years in prison losing his son to his parents and to death through his parents’ actions.
Edmundo Diaz committed suicide right after being notified of his son’s death from negligence.
Two added lives lost due to hubris in thinking Diaz’s knowledge of combat medicine was better than policy.
