Measurements

Summary:

Kanji decides to make Yosuke a pair of gloves, which means measuring his hands.

Notes:

prompt 25 from flufftober: cold hands

Work Text:

Yosuke sat at the low table in Kanji's room, trying to evaluate his life and figure out what had landed him here. One too many times of grabbing Kanji by the wrist during a battle or bumping against him when handing him something and Kanji swearing about how cold his hands were had eventually led to Kanji declaring he was making Yosuke a pair of gloves.

"I have bad circulation," Yosuke had protested weakly.

"At least you won't be freezing anybody else with your icicle fingers," Kanji said, and ordered Yosuke to his house for measurements.

"Right." Kanji sat across from Yosuke, setting a stack of tracing paper on the table, along with a notepad and pen. He had an actual measuring tape around his neck, which made the corners of Yosuke's mouth quirk up. "Hands," Kanji ordered. Yosuke's smile dropped. Right. That was what was happening.

He didn't know why his nerves were jangling so badly. It wasn't like he'd never been fitted for clothes before. Just not by Kanji. In his room.

Kanji made an impatient noise and Yosuke held his hands out. Kanji laid a sheet of the tracing paper under them and took one of Yosuke's wrists in his hands. Yosuke jumped.

"You good, man?" Kanji wasn't looking at him, focused on laying his hand on the paper.

"Y-yeah, I just - startled," he mumbled, embarrassed at his own reaction. He was being stupid, it was Kanji, there was nothing to be worried about. His stomach was squirming for no damn reason.

Kanji traced carefully around Yosuke's hand before lifting it and setting the tracing paper aside. Pulling the measuring tape out from around his neck, he wrapped it around Yosuke's hand, using his thumb to hold it in place while he took the measurements down on his notepad.

Yosuke's eyes were locked on Kanji's hands as he moved the tape, measuring the length of each of Yosuke's fingers, manipulating them so he could fit the tape around the base of each. Kanji's hands were rough with callouses, but so were his at this point. And Yosuke knew that, he'd grabbed or been grabbed by Kanji dozens of times as they fought through various dungeons, why was it suddenly so...magnified? Why did he feel like he was gonna throw up every time Kanji moved one of his fingers, laid them out flat so he could measure? And not in the overblown way he'd protested before - he felt too warm and too cold all at once. Maybe he was getting sick.

"Still fuckin' freezing," Kanji muttered at one point.

"I told you.""

"Well, these oughtta help." Kanji squinted - glared? - at the base of Yosuke's thumb as he tried to get the measuring tape to sit how he needed it. "Not with your circulation, just with not torturing the rest of us with it." He pressed down on the ball of Yosuke's thumb, trying to hold the tape in place, but Yosuke's hold hand folded inwards at the pressure. "Goddammit - "

"Sorry," Yosuke said, flexing his fingers back out. "Must be a pressure point."

"If you wanted to hold my hand so bad, all you had to do was ask." Kanji's eyes flicked up to Yosuke, a grin on his face.

"You're the one arranged for us to be in your room alone together," Yosuke shot back, even as he felt the blood drain from his face. "Maybe you wanted to hold my hand. Weirdo," he added quickly.

"What, and get frostbite?" Kanji rearranged Yosuke's hand again, pinning the measuring tape back in place, but without quite so much pressure this time. "Not likely."

"Yeah, well. Good." Yosuke's shoulders slumped at his own lameness, and he propped his chin in his other hand as Kanji finished taking his measurements.

"Alright." Kanji released Yosuke's hand, tossing his notepad onto his bed. "Got it. Oughtta have them by next week. You'll have to practice with your knives, but it'll probably be easier to hold onto them with warm fingers."

"Here's hoping." Yosuke stood, trying to resist the urge to flex his fingers against the phantom warmth from Kanji's hands.

"We can go through a dungeon," Kanji suggested. "One we've already mostly cleared out. Just to test 'em. Once I, y'know. Make 'em."

"Still trying to get me alone?" Yosuke was trying to tease, but the air was suddenly too heavy, too close.

"You'll never know unless you take me up on it," Kanji said with a flash of a grin, too fast for Yosuke to read.

"Yeah, well. Fine. I guess."

"Good."

"Cool."

"...see you then, I guess," Yosuke said, and fled the room.
