our mornings

Summary:

James doesn’t know how mornings got this gentle until Keonho starts waking up beside him.

Work Text:

The first light of dawn spilled softly across the room, brushing over tangled sheets and the warmth of two people who hadn’t yet learned to sleep apart. Keonho stirred first, eyes blinking open to the sight of James’s hair messy against the pillow, his mouth parted slightly, breathing steady and calm. The world outside could have fallen silent and Keonho wouldn’t have noticed—this was the only quiet that mattered.

He stayed still for a moment, watching. There was something beautiful about the stillness of James like this. No walls, no teasing smile, just peace. Keonho lifted a hand and traced the air above his cheek, close but not touching, afraid to wake him too soon. His chest ached, that soft kind of ache that comes when love is so new it still surprises you.

James stirred eventually, eyelashes fluttering before his eyes opened. A sleepy grin spread across his face.
“Were you watching me again?” he mumbled, voice thick with sleep.

Keonho blushed, caught. “Maybe. You look peaceful when you sleep.”

“Peaceful or weird?” James chuckled and shifted closer, his arm finding its way around Keonho’s waist. “You know you don’t have to stare; I’m not going anywhere.”

The words were teasing, but they sank deep. Keonho smiled faintly, his thumb tracing invisible patterns on James’s hand. “I know. I just… still can’t believe you’re here sometimes.”

James tilted his head slightly, studying him. “You say that like I might disappear.”

“Maybe I’m just scared,” Keonho whispered. “I’ve always been scared of good things. They never stayed long.”

James’s fingers brushed his jaw gently. “Then let’s make this the first good thing that does.” His tone was quiet but steady, the kind of promise that didn’t need grand gestures. Just belief.

They lay there for a while, the silence filled with heartbeats and morning air. The sunlight crept further across the bed, painting them in gold.

“What do you think love is?” Keonho asked suddenly. “Like… to you?”

James thought for a moment. “It’s this,” he said. “It’s waking up next to someone and realizing you don’t have to be anyone else. It’s quiet. Safe. A little terrifying, but in the best way.” He smiled. “And it’s your hair sticking up everywhere.”

Keonho laughed softly, swatting at him. “You ruin every romantic moment.”

“Not ruin. Just make it real.” James leaned in, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “Besides, your laugh’s my favorite sound.”

Their hands found each other again, fingers fitting perfectly, like they’d done it for years. Keonho’s chest loosened with every breath. The fear, the uncertainty—it was still there, but it didn’t feel so heavy anymore. Not with James beside him.

“Do you ever think about the future?” he asked quietly.

“All the time,” James admitted. “Not in the big way though. I think about small things. Making breakfast together. Getting lazy on weekends. Maybe getting a plant we’ll probably forget to water.”

Keonho smiled, the thought of it painting warmth behind his ribs. “I like that kind of future.”

James leaned in again, lips brushing his gently this time. It wasn’t rushed, not hungry, just soft—like a word spoken slowly. When they pulled apart, Keonho’s eyes were glossy, full of something that felt too vast for language.

“I think I love you,” he said quietly. “I know it’s soon, but—”

“I know,” James whispered back, eyes tender. “I love you too.”

The room fell still again. Only their breathing, the sound of the city faint in the distance. They stayed wrapped up like that for hours, drifting between sleep and conversation, laughter and soft kisses that carried no urgency. Just the quiet comfort of knowing they had time—time to grow, to learn, to love a little more each morning.

And when the sunlight turned bright and warm, Keonho closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against James’s.
“Our mornings are perfect,” he murmured.

James smiled, brushing his thumb over Keonho’s cheek. “They are, because they start with you.”

They didn’t move for a long time. The day could wait. For now, the world was just them—two hearts learning to beat in the same rhythm, wrapped in light, in warmth, in love.
