Work Text:
The most important rule of hitman work was not to make it personal with each other.
There was always the chance that they were pitted against each other from being hired in rival gangs to fight for them or sent to kill the same target; it made things far too complicated. No one ever broke this rule without consequences.
He was such a fool to think they could make it work when they were doomed from the very start. No amount of ignoring what they were behind closed doors would change that; no rules they made to keep each other safe were enough, no secrets could protect them from the inevitable situation they found themselves in.
Who could have known they would end up like this?
The taste of copper filled his mouth as he sat quietly in the alleyway; he can still hear the gunshots ringing through the air as the rival gangs who hired them. It was a rather cruel twist of the knife they called fate that they were hired to fight each other in a senseless gang war for money that they hoped to spend on each other.
He blinked his eyes as he felt fingers brush over his own from beside him. Slowly he turned his head to face the man he called his other half for the past three years. A part of him knew who shouldn’t have pursued him in the romantic sense. That it was too risky, too dangerous for both of them…
Love really does make people stupid it seemed.
“...You feel cold…”
Despite the pain, he chuckled even if it felt as if the bullet in his lungs was being pushed deeper, “Mm…it’s the middle of November….not exactly dressed for warmth here.”
“Heh…hehe…”
It’s rare that he heard Kakuzu laugh at something he said. It felt like it only finalized what they both already knew as he slowly moved his hand to intertwine their fingers. The dark tanned skin was a stark contrast to his own sickly pale white. He wishes he was holding his hand in bed instead of in a filthy alley avoiding the gang war going on. Where they weren’t currently suffering from gunshot wounds that would prove fatal if they didn’t get medical help…
No one would let any ambulances past their barricade though. Both of them knew by the time it would quiet down enough it would very well be too late.
“....Fuck you always look so gorgeous…” he wheezed out even when it caused more blood to drip past his lips.
Blood shot green eyes softened as he squeezed his hand carefully. Even now as they bleed on the ground they still looked like they came from completely different worlds. Kakuzu’s well tailored suit was stained red where two bullets had ripped through him, one of his leather shoes missing as he swallowed thickly. In contrast, Hidan was wearing his favored leather jacket lined with gray fur, a dark tanned t-shirt and ripped jeans, his boots glistening with blood staining them.
Despite the pain, Hidan moved closer to Kakuzu, resting his head of unkempt silver hair on the other’s shoulder. He wishes Kakuzu had let his hair be down today instead of up in a bun. He wanted to at least close his eyes while smelling balsam and patchouli soap his lover was known for using.
“...Just shut up, Hidan…” Kakuzu whispered as he rested his cheek against his head, “...save your breath yeah? It…it’s going to be all right…you foolish man…”
He gave a gargled laugh that became a horrible wet cough, “Fucking….hell…m-making me laugh as I’m bleeding out here…” he smiled though regardless. Even as his own vision was beginning to blur in and out.
Weakly he squeezed the other’s hand as he closed his eyes and sniffled a bit. It wasn’t fair really…that the miserly man beside him somehow managed to claim his heart in the time they spent together and in return gave Hidan his. Even if it was a foolish thing for them to do, they still did it despite knowing that this was the most likely outcome.
Hidan didn’t care. If he could go back three years before, he would have still walked up to his lover in the bar that night where they had a brawl that ended with them going in the elevator to a hotel; his nose broken and a scratch on Kakuzu’s scarred cheek.
It should have been a one night stand. It was meant to be a one night stand.
“....Hidan.”
“Mm?”
“...I’m sorry.”
He looked at him as he moved to interlock their fingers, rubbing his thumb over his knuckle. He found it harder to talk now as all he can do is listen.
“...I’m sorry for not telling you about the job…If I knew I would have declined…”
You shouldn’t. They paid you more than their enemies paid me. I should have told you and left them to fend for themselves. You would have been fine if I hadn’t been out there… He wanted to tell Kakuzu that as he opened his mouth to do so, but all he could do was cough.
Kakuzu pressed a shaky kiss to his temple, “...Do you think…in hell they would…let us stick together….” his hand was trembling in Hidan’s slightly, “...or…separate us because….you and I…would rule the place?”
Hidan gave a copper flavored chuckle at the attempt at humor even as hot tears started to stream down his face. He doesn’t let go of his hand, not once even when it starts to feel like they’re both getting colder. More tired. The sounds of the fight were fading in and out as they stayed side by side.
“..Kuzu…” he mumbled out the nickname softly, “...I...I lo..” he coughed slightly, “...I lov…”
“Shhh…shh…tell me….tell me later…brat….when we…when we get home…”
Home…home sounded good. Home sounded amazing right now where his altar to Jashin was waiting, where the four fluffy giants lay at the door for them, where their bed was…
He felt Kakuzu slump against him…and then when his vision started to go dark he swore he saw a figure running towards them. They sounded too far away to hear as he felt a grip on his lover’s hand.
He didn’t think when their world fell apart it would be so silent.
