Chapter Text
It's Been two years since the war started. Blood of humans stained the earth while the dust of monsters blew in the wind. This war made Ant sick. He wasn't a soldier, he was a bard. Entertaining was his purpose not… all this death. The ant monster frowned so many humans loved his performance whether it was his music or plays he always made them smile. So why…
Tenna hummed a sweet tune to lighten his mood. One of Spamton’s favorite melodies. He would sing it every time Spamton needed him as a muse for when he painted the most beautiful pieces of art. It was so kind of queen Toriel to welcome spamton into the camp. He was one of the few humans who chose the monster's side for the war. And how could he not? When Ant, the love of his life was a monster himself.
This war has been so hard on the mailman. He grew a bit paranoid waking in a cold sweat having nightmares nearly every night. But it was ok! For Ant would be by his side always. Spamton has been so tired lately and Ant loved holding the small human while he slept.
“What is he doing?”
A monster that Ant barely paid attention to asked.
“Is that..?”
“Yeah.” Whispered another monster. “He just bandaged it up and…”
“How long has he been like this?”
“Hours.”
“We should get the queen.”
The monsters nod to each other leaving Ant rocking back and forth keeping his dear mailman asleep. He was so exhausted after all.
“Anthony?” Queen Toriel said, kneeling beside him.
“Hello Tori.” He whispered back. “I'm sorry if I sound rude but may you please keep your voice low? Spammy needs his rest.”
“Ah. Yes… Tell me Anthony, what do you remember from this morning?” Toriel lowered her voice as Ant requested.
“Well, Spammy made breakfast and then said he was going to be on patrol for the day. He came back so tired, the poor thing didn't even want dinner.”
Toriel's expression only grew sadder as the Ant monster talked. He puts her hand on his shoulder.
“No, Anthony, that's not what happened.”
Ant's face becomes unreadable.
“Spamton was on patrol yes, but he and his group was attacked-”
“Stop it.” Ant suddenly stood, his love still in his arms… three arms. Didnt… doesn't he have four?
“And you tried to save him- but lost your arm and-”
“SHUT UP!! STOP TALKING!!”
Ant squeezed Spamton closer to his chest.
“H-he just needs rest!” Ant's breathing quickens. “He's so, so tired after today, he b-bearly gets any sleep.”
Toriel stood up and slowly walked toward Ant with her arms raised.
“Anthony, take deep breaths-”
“Don't touch him!” Ant backs into a tent wall. “Hes asleep! He's tired. He'll wake up when he gets enough rest!”
Toriel gently takes Ant's arms slowly unfolding them to reveal spamton. Ant was shaking. Spamton was pale, his eyes glossed over and was completely limp… he was dead.
…
Ant was too late when he heard his screams. He was so blinded by rage that after killing all those humans he… completely shut down. Not even realizing that he lost one of his arms.
He picked up Spamton's mangled body and wrapped his wounds but the human was already dead… and told himself his lover was just sleeping.
“I'm so sorry, my child.” Toriel wept.
“He was… He…”
Ant's legs then give out. He falls to his knees still holding Spamton close. Ant, completely lost in his tortured mind, didn't notice when Toriel gently took Spamton from his arms. It was all a blur as he was then laid down in the infirmary.
…
Spamton was buried under a beautiful tree. He died saving the others. Using the fact that he was a human as a distraction… they didn't take too kindly to monster sympathizers. Ant stopped eating, he never sang for the other soldiers again as he decided to lay under the shady tree where his love letter was buried. Everyone tried what they could but in the end Anthony the monster died of heartbreak. Right under that shady tree a pile of dust formed the wind blowing it away.
