Once again, Fallen Star held Fenix in his arms.
Blood was painting the snow red below them and Fallen Star could feel the burning warmth dripping into his celestial body. The stray, crimson drops floated into him and into the void of his black hole, devouring it.
His face was twisted into one of grief, silent pain as he watched the blood ooze out of his lover's abdomen. They stabbed him like a sacrifice and left him to die alone, once more. It was a story he had seen before.
“I'll come back,” Fenix says, eyes watery from tears and voice quiet from weakness.
“I know,” said Fallen Star, moving his rock hand to Fenix’, holding it up and leaning down to kiss the fingers tenderly. “It doesn't hurt any less seeing you like this.”
His cold rocks gently caressed the fleshy, warm ones of Fenix. He always adored how warm he was, like a little flame in his eternal night. His warmth always radiated through any attire he wore, the wraps over his arms and legs just barely containing it. But oh so often that heat and light dies.
Fenix tended to martyr himself often, for any cause and any place he was in. Never once did old age or an accident befall him. It was always a sacrifice.
How Fallen Star wished he was just a bit more selfish.
“I'm sorry you keep up with this,” Fenix tried to lean into his partner some more, to which Fallen Star adjusts their position so he was able to sit up and lean on him. His arm wrapped around him protectively, pulling him in. “Why do you still look for me?”
“Because I love you,” Fallen Star said, hand moving over the wound. He frowned at the wound, soaking Fenix's shendyt and painting his pale skin and snow red. “Even if it means finding you again and again.”
“Aren't you tired?” Fenix looked up at him.
“Of course I am… but that won't stop me. I always find you,” Fallen Star adjusted the position to allow him to brush Fenix's blue hair from his face. He was so beautiful, and this beauty always faded so fast. It was a pity.
He looked down the snow at the circlet that fell off Fenix’s head, and picked it up. “You always find some way to give yourself to others…”
“Are you jealous?” Fenix chuckled weakly at his attempt at a joke. Fallen Star smiled bitterly at him, carefully putting the circlet back on him.
“A little bit,” he admitted. “I wish so often for you to fly alongside me rather than over some ungrateful village or thankless mortal.”
“Maybe… one day.” Fenix took a deep, shaky breath, and Fallen Star held him tighter. “It does sound nice…”
“I'd take you across the galaxy with me,” Fallen Star kept speaking, his hand moving to caress Fenix's face softly. His tone became gentler the more he saw his lover's eyes close. “Across the nebula, past the meteors all the way over the stardust.”
“I'd let you become my north star, the guiding light I always look to. Would you like that?”
Fenix thought about it.
“I… maybe just want to… be beside you,” he croaked out, and Fallen Star leaned closer into him to hear him better. “So when you… look over your shoulder… I'll be there.”
Fallen Star smiled, and so did Fenix. He pulled him into a kiss, many of their thousands of last kisses, and hugged him tightly, trying to preserve some of his living warmth. But he felt it fade.
“See you soon, my songbird,” he whispered to him.
“Goodnight, starlight,” Fenix said, huffing a last laugh before taking his last breath, eyes just barely closing as he finally went limp.
Fallen star barely had any time until blue flames took over his lover's body, burning him out of his hands and blowing the ashes far to another place.
He always in a futile attempt would grab after them, only to watch them fly off and away from him.
He sighed, standing up as he longingly gazed after them. He knew he would search for them again, looking for the phoenix he swore his love to.
It ached horribly every time to see him go, but at this point the pain was worth it.
Fallen hoped that one day, his beloved phoenix will soar beside him rather than over the mortals.
