    Summary

    Cheng Xiaoshi, along with fellow Slayers and Hunters of his Monastery, is dispatched to dispose of a vampire menace within their territory.

    They find the vampire Lu Guang.

    They manage to capture it alive and ensnare it for the rare opportunity to perform thorough research, study, and experimentation, followed by execution - if it happens to survive long enough.

    However, Cheng Xiaoshi is a talented enough Slayer to impress an alternative upon the Council: that he instead be allowed to take custody of the vampire personally and acquaint himself intimately with it for the purpose of understanding vampires as sentient beings.

    They permit him, under the agreement that he will prevent it from hurting anyone, and it will drink only his blood.

    And furthermore, if it takes even a single step across the laws of the church, God forbid actually harm anyone, they reserve the right to put it to death, and Cheng Xiaoshi for failing as well.
