Work Text:

Hizashi was buzzing with excitement. It was Thursday, which meant an after school date with Shouta!

It was a couple years back, when they both were overwhelmed with their multiple jobs and went two months without seeing each other for no longer than five minutes in the teachers’ lounge, which ended in a huge argument over dirty dishes. There was shouting, there were tears and once they calmed down, they agreed something had to change if their marriage were to last. They had to make an actual effort for each other and thus, the tradition was born. Every other Saturday would be a date night and every Thursday after school they went to the cat cafe they visited ever since they were kids. Of course there were exceptions, like that one time Hizashi caught a cold so nasty his sneezes rattled windows in their apartment, or when Shouta was in casts after USJ (even if he insisted he was fine and he could go).

Today though? Nothing. No windows shattering sneezes, no grave injuries, no sudden calls for an emergency mission. Nothing. Hizashi would leave his directional speaker at UA, quickly take a shower in the locker room to get rid of his cockatiel up-do and hero costume (he made this mistake one (1) time in the beginning. The amount of Present Mic fans that disturbed them was enough to dampen their mood but the real straw to break the camel’s back were claws that shredded Hizashi’s leather pants) and then they would be off to enjoy each other’s presence.

And the kitties, obviously.

It was only the second period of the day but Hizashi wished the clock would move faster. Only four periods and lunch break left.

He was packing his textbooks and notebook with lesson plans in an already empty Classroom of Class 3-B when he spotted Matsumoto Ayumi from his homeroom hovering by the door. She was fiddling with the hem of her jacket and he smiled at her and gestured to come inside. She was a lovely kid, a bit shy but she was opening up as the time went on.

“What’s up, little listener?” He said with his patented Present Mic smile in place. He resisted an urge to check the time.

“I, um… I was wondering, sensei, if you had any tips if I were to pursue translation as my career path?” Ayumi asked, her eyes glued to her shoes.

Hizashi’s smile widened. He loved advising his students.

“Sit down, Matsumoto-san.” He told her and picked up the chalk.

It took him about forty minutes. Matsumoto’s English was relatively good for a first year high school student, and UA’s curriculum was quite extensive, but if she wanted to become an English translator, there were many resources to utilise to become more familiar with English-speaking cultures that would make it easier to immerse herself in the text. Hizashi provided her with books and websites that she could read up on, and came up with a short list of novels in English from the top of his head. He also advised her to start translating comic books she loved as a hobby and promised to prepare  her a short syllabus she could follow to get a head start for university.

She thanked him profusely and left the classroom with a smile and a skip to her step. Hizashi felt warmth spreading in his chest at a job well done until he glanced at his phone. Shit, it took them forty minutes, and he should be finishing his shower at this point.

He rushed to gather his remaining stuff and ran to the teachers’ lounge. Surprisingly, it was empty. He looked around for Shouta, who would always wait for him as he changed out of his hero costume, but there was no sign of his husband.

Frowning, he left his bag in his chair and went to the closet in the corner for his civilian outfit he put there in the morning. Then he quickly went to the adjoining bathroom where his hair products took half the shelf space. It took him a minute of adjusting the stream, but finally the water was at perfect temperature and he wiggled out of his clothes and stepped under the water to bring his hair down.

Washing away the gel and hairspray and then deep-conditioning his hair to make sure it remained healthy was a tedious task and not the first nor last time Hizashi wished he came up with a better signature look. Alas, ten years into his hero career was too late for any drastic changes. At least free products he got as brand ambassador saved them a small fortune, otherwise even having five jobs between them wouldn’t cover the expenses

He put his hair in a towel and another big towel around himself and stepped out…

Right into a huge puddle of water. He blinked blearily and looked around himself, only to realise he flooded the entire bathroom. There was at least three centimeters of water and when he looked back into the walk-in cabin, he noticed the drain was clogged with his hair.

Tears gathered in his eyes. It would take him at least another twenty minutes to clean it all up, making him even more late to their date. He was tempted to just leave it as it were for the time being, but unfortunately, he wasn’t a dick.

With a sigh, he grabbed a towel and started absorbing the water, squishing it every couple moments. It felt like ages before Hizashi felt he could leave the rest of the job to the fan to dry out the moisture.

Of course now he was sweaty and gross and he wanted to shower again, but he didn’t have time. He quickly put on his jeans and V-neck and checked his phone.

Kitten

>gonna be late

Hizashi frowned. The timestamp read fifty minutes ago. He hoped Shouta wasn’t waiting for him for too long. He exited the bathroom and noticed that the lounge was still empty. Did Shouta go without him? He decided to swing by the 1-A classroom. As he was approaching the room, he could hear his husband’s voice, and he sounded pissed.

He peeked through the window and noticed Midoriya and Bakugou sitting at their desks. Ah, it all made sense now. Figuring Shouta still had a  piece of his mind to give to them, he leaned against the wall and scrolled on his phone mindlessly until he heard the shuffling.

Two boys left the classroom and Hizashi smiled at them.

“How bad did you piss off Mr. Grumpypants?” He asked teasingly and he heard Shouta scoff.

Midoriya looked at him owlishly and Bakugou was fuming. “What’s it to you, you fucking rando?” He bristled.

“Language!” Shouta yelled from inside the classroom and Hizashi tilted his head in confusion.

And then it clicked.

He smiled sinisterly. “Well, listener, it’s now up to me to improve his mood, I need to know what I’m working with.” He said with a wink and relished the confusion in Bakugou’s eyes.

“You’re an idiot.” Shouta told him as he stepped outside and closed the door.

Hizashi laughed, “So you’ve been telling me for the past fifteen years, babe!” He said cheerily and immediately slapped hand over his mouth. Shit, they…

“You’re together?” Bakugou asked incredulously and Midoriya looked like he was about to combust.

Hizashi smiled sheepishly at his husband before focusing on the two students.

“Let’s keep it between us, okay, little listeners?” He said conspiratorially and Midoriya nodded fervently. Bakugou was pouting but he nodded too.

“Alright, now scurry away!” He shooed them away and the boys started their trek down the hall.

“Really?” Shouta said when they were out of an earshot.

“Sorry! But hey, could’ve been worse! I could’ve called you kitten.” Hizashi said with a menacing grin and Shouta shivered.

“I’d never live it down.”

“Right!” Hizashi agreed cheerfully and bumped their shoulders together as they made their way to the teachers’ lounge. He cherished Shouta’s warm smile so much that all the shit that’s been going on today seemed worth it.

“So what did the two rascals do this time?” He asked lightheartedly as they approached the staff room. Shouta rolled his eyes and opened his mouth to respond when…

“I’m so sorry, sensei!”

A girl with bright pink hair, not Mina Hizashi noticed with amusement, but Kobeni from 2-D, ran straight into Shouta; the carton box with sheet music went all over the floor and Shouta was drenched in coffee from his travel mug he was holding.

“Kobeni!” Hizashi chastised but tried to keep his tone light. “No running in the hallways!”

“Sorry, Mic-sensei!” She apologised, face all red, and bowed. “Music club decided to change songs for the cultural festival at the last moment and I was bringing archival music from the storage!”

Hizashi crouched to help her pick up the sheets and took a peek at the titles: some newer pop songs and plenty of pre-quirk rock pieces.

“Hell yeah, listener! I know Hayakawa-sensei is your supervisor but if you want any advice on making a setlist, feel free to ask!” He offered as he handed her the paper.

She looked at him starry-eyed. “Really?” She asked shyly, clutching the sheets to her chest. “That would be so awesome, sensei! We all love your show!”

Hizashi cooed and patted her on her head. “Catch me tomorrow after the classes, kiddo!” He said and she nodded before putting everything in the box and, after one last apologetic bow, went down the corridor.

Hizashi looked at Shouta who was scowling at his wet uniform. It was so not their day… But he didn’t want to skip their date. The day was supposed to be theirs.

As if reading his mind, Shouta looked up at him with determination in his bloodshot eyes. “I have spare sweats in the lounge.”

Hizashi nodded and they entered the room. Shouta made a beeline for the closet and took his outfit and then quickly went to the bathroom. Hizashi picked up the tote bag he put his hero costume in and sat on the couch to wait for his husband.

“Hizashi?” Shouta called out from the bathroom, concern lacing his voice. “Why was the bathroom flooded?”

Hizashi let out a tired laugh. “Small malfunction, babe. I spent like thirty minutes cleaning it up, ya dig?”

Shouta’s head peeked out of the bathroom. “That’s it. We’re ordering in and watching that musical you’ve been talking about recently. At this rate we’ll destroy the cat cafe.”

The horrified face he made at the mere idea made Hizashi laugh even harder. “Got it, babe.”

They somehow managed to make it home without major accidents, even if Hizashi’s Mustang didn’t want to start initially and the restaurant mixed up their order making them wait an additional 20 minutes for it to be remade.

When they finally made it home, they all but collapsed on their couch with Hizashi’s head on Shouta’s chest and legs tangled together. Shouta immediately started running his fingers through Hizashi’s hair and scratching his scalp, nearly making him purr.

Maybe the day was exhausting. Maybe nothing went right that day. Maybe they didn’t get their usual date. But at the end of the day, laying on the couch cuddled together, stealing food from the other’s plate (“Shouta! You said you didn’t want karaage today!”) and just existing together made it all worth it.

Spilled coffee and flooded bathroom included.
