Work Text:

“Shoot and she dies!”

Ekko took in the nightmare that surrounded him. Jinx, bloodied and bruised, Finn’s knife at her throat, cutting just each to draw small beads of blood. Ekko could feel the weight of Jinx’s own gun in his hand, and even as he pointed it at the Chembaron he knew he was terrible shot. He searched his wife’s face for any sign of fear but she just had her usual smile, her eyes sparkling, practically daring him to fire.

Go ahead. I trust you.

Ekko pulled the trigger.

The blade cut deep even as the bullet lodged itself into Finn’s skull, opening Jinx’s throat to the bone. Ekko moved fast, using the Z-drive to rewind.

“Shoot and she—“

This time he didn’t have a chance to finish his sentence. This Ekko was fast enough to save her from the knife. But maybe seeing her die had shaken him or maybe he’d just caught some of her bad luck, because the bullet hit her square in the chest.

He didn’t wait to see if she survived that. He rewound again.

“Shoot and—“

Three times the charm. Finn went down with a bullet to the neck, his knife making only a thin red line across Jinx’s white throat. She moved away from the falling body, laughing, giving it a kick before she ran into Ekko’s arms. He held her tight as she gave him a peck on the cheek.

“I didn’t know you were such a good shot!”

“I’m not,” Ekko said grimly.

“How many times?”

“Two,” he said. “Got you on the third.”

“My savior,” she said.

For a second she was there, alive and glowing in the way only Jinx could. And then a bullet clipped through her head.

Ekko rewound again with a sigh. Somehow, he still felt a bit of grief everytime she died. But he’d get her back. He always did.

Fourth time's the charm.

Notes:

The Z-drive has so much angst potential and I never see anyone using it in fanfics
