Chapter Text
The bells of the White Tower rang slowly in the morning air, spreading a note of solemnity through the marble corridors. The sun filtered through the tall windows, drawing golden trails across the polished stone. Moiraine Damodred, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, paused for a moment in front of one of the windows, watching Tar Valon awaken below her.
Beside her, a young woman with dark hair and clear eyes stared at the same horizon with a mixture of fear and hope. Her name was Sarah, and her heart was pounding: that morning she would take her vows to become a Novice of the Tower.
"You must not be afraid," Moiraine said, her voice calm but tinged with something deeper. "Fear is only a shadow of the Light. It passes if you face it with courage."
Sarah looked down. "I'm not afraid of the trials, Mother... I'm afraid of disappointing you."
Moiraine turned to her. For a moment, the usual impassive mask of the Aes Sedai wavered. She saw herself in the young woman—the same determination, the same hunger for knowledge, and the same fire for truth. But there was also something different in her: a gentleness that Moiraine had long since sacrificed.
"Darling," she said softly, "you were not born to be my shadow. You were born to be your own Light."
Sarah took a deep breath. The words settled in her heart like a seal. "I wonder... if you were afraid too, on the day of your vow."
A faint smile formed on Moiraine's lips. "Oh, yes. But then I had no one to hold my hand."
Sarah took her hand—hesitantly, then more firmly. Her mother's slender fingers clasped hers. The moment was brief, but it held years of silence, distance, and unspoken protection.
When the bells rang again, Moiraine released her daughter's hand and resumed her composure. "Go, the Tower awaits you. And remember: every choice you make, you make under the Light, but also in the shadows. Both belong to you."
The young woman nodded, tears stinging her eyes, but a smile finally lighting up her face. She turned and walked toward the Novice Hall, her step determined.
Moiraine stood watching her disappear over the threshold.
Only then, in a whisper that no one would ever hear, did she murmur:
"May the Light always shine upon you, my little flame."
And for the first time in many years, Moiraine Sedai allowed herself to breathe—as a mother, not just as an Aes Sedai.
