Clueless

Summary:

Another doctor flirts with Wolf in front of Josh. Wolf doesn’t even notice.

Work Text:

Oliver Wolf is sitting at his desk finishing up his day’s charts so that he can leave as soon as Josh is out of surgery. He doesn’t notice that he’s been joined by Dr. Sims, the Rheumatologist to whom Wolf referred a patient early in the shift. They’ve barely spoken two words to each other prior to this, and Wolf has already forgotten that he exists. Neither has noticed Josh, who was behind Sims and has stopped in the office doorway, while the other doctor approaches Wolf’s desk.

“Dr. Wolf, would you like to join me for a cup of coffee? I’d love to get to know you better.”

Wolf looks up, confused at who is talking to him, but then he sees Sims’s tie (which is a garish green) and puts the pieces together. “No, thanks. I’ve already got plans.” He finally sees Josh and his face breaks into a wide grin. “Ah, Josh, there you are. Let’s go home.”

Wolf grabs his bag and is out the door with Josh before Dr. Sims has even processed that he’s been turned down. They’re in the car when Josh chuckles and says “You know he was flirting with you, right?”

“Who?”

“Dr. Sims. He didn’t just want to have coffee with you.”

“Why would he flirt with me?”

Josh rolls his eyes and laughs aloud at his boyfriend’s idiocy. “Because you’re hot.”

Wolf shakes his head like he’s unconvinced, which just makes Josh laugh harder. “Even if that’s true, doesn’t the whole hospital know that we’re together?”

“Sims is relatively new, so he might not know. Or he might not care.”

“I referred a patient to him, but I’d hardly even spoken to him before today. That seems a bit fast to decide he wants to have coffee- or anything else- with me.”

“Like I said, you’re really hot. God knows I can barely keep my hands off you.” To emphasize his point, Josh runs a hand up Wolf’s thigh, sending a flare of heat and desire through them both. Knowing that he needs to focus on driving, Josh clears his throat and resumes their conversation, but he doesn’t remove his hand. “Did you really not notice that he was flirting?”

“It took me weeks to realize that you were flirting with me, and I actually wanted you to flirt with me. I still do.”

“I’m glad to hear it.”

A sudden idea occurs to Wolf and he turns to face the other man, a look of fond amusement on his face. “Josh, were you jealous?”

“Not in the way you mean; I found it more amusing than upsetting. I can’t really blame Dr. Sims for noticing that you’re attractive, and I knew that you’d never take him up on it.”

“Of course I wouldn’t. You’re the only one I want.” Wolf pauses for a moment, feeling his way through what he wants to say. “I don’t really understand infidelity. If I wanted to sleep with someone else, I wouldn’t be in a relationship with you. Besides, after watching Carol’s marriage fall apart because Morris couldn’t keep it in his pants, I know that I could never do that to someone I cared about.”

“I know you couldn’t. But some people like the rush of an affair; it keeps things fresh and exciting. Or so I’m told.”

“You excite me plenty. Dr. Sims has no shot.”

“Too bad for him. You’re all mine.” That makes them both laugh and Wolf grabs Josh’s hand from its spot on his thigh, pressing a kiss to the knuckles, his eyes suddenly serious.

“You know that I’m in love with you, right?”

“I do. But I’ll never get tired of hearing you say it. In case you were wondering, I love you too.”

“I wasn’t wondering, but it’s still nice to hear.” The last light of their journey turns red, giving them a convenient pause to exchange a heated kiss. They break apart only when the car behind them honks its horn, making them both grin as Josh takes his foot off the brake. They’re still grinning a moment later when they pull into Oliver’s gravel driveway.

“Now that we’re home,” Josh says, putting the car in park and turning to face his boyfriend, “Dr. Wolf, will you join me for a cup of coffee?”

“I’d love to.”
