“You are supposed to be dead,” James said slowly, his mind spinning with confusion. “Haven’t you heard the rumours?”
“Really?” Jack glanced down at his feet, his hands moving in gestures. “I surely don’t look dead.”
“Yes, you are! I had a meeting with Lord Beckett when I got the news.” James’s voice rose, though he wasn’t sure if he was shouting at Jack or at himself. His composure was slipping through his fingers with every word.
“I see.” The pirate captain’s face darkened, his usual grin fading away. “Then I suppose I’ll need a way to come back.” His familiar brown eyes locked onto James’s.
“Jack, you can’t bring someone back from the dead,” James said, stepping back, folding his arms tightly across his chest.
“How would you know?” Jack frowned. “I remember you didn’t believe in curses… until Isla de...”
“I… That’s not—” James faltered, but Jack closed the distance, placing a warm hand against his cheek.
“I hope we see each other soon, Jamie. I’d like to continue where we left off last time.”
Before James could respond, Jack leaned forward and pressed a featherlight kiss to his lips.
