Work Text:

The air in the stadium was a living, breathing entity, a pulsating mass of heat and sound that throbbed in time with the frantic heartbeat of ten thousand Onces. The sea of Candy Bongs shimmered like a galaxy of pastel stars, their collective voice a roaring ocean of adoration. Backstage, in the relative quiet of the wing, Jeongyeon adjusted the cuff of her shimmering silver top, her fingers trembling just slightly. It wasn't the usual pre-performance jitters; it was a specific, potent cocktail of adrenaline and something else, something she’d been nursing for years that felt dangerously close to boiling over tonight. Across from her, bathed in the faint glow of the stage lights bleeding into the darkness, was Nayeon. Dressed in a contrasting, elegant shiny silver dress that hugged her frame, with a pair of shades she was a vision of playful confidence, but Jeongyeon could see the familiar, slight bite of her lower lip, a tell-tale sign that the lead singer’s composure was just a facade.

Their eyes met, and a silent, electric current passed between them, a language forged over a decade of shared laughter, tears, and secrets. Tonight was different. Their cover of“My Ear’s Candy” had always been a fan-favorite, a moment of playful, charged theatre. But the whispers, the lingering touches during rehearsals, the way Nayeon’s gaze had held hers a little too long during soundcheck, the way it all pointed towards an unspoken agreement. Tonight, they were going to cross a line.

The opening notes of the song, a smooth, funky bassline, slithered through the stadium, and the crowd’s roar intensified into a scream of recognition. The spotlight hit them, and they stepped out of the shadows, two halves of a perfect whole.

Nayeon began to sing, her deep voice, warm and husky as she's taking the male role.

"네가 원하는 그 말이 뭐야? 내게 말해봐," Nayeon sang, dancing in front of the crowd as she started to feel the tension grow within them.

"네가 무슨 말을 해준데도 나는 날아가," Jeongyeon responded, her voice sweet and clear. She danced on the opposite side of the stage, following the usual choreography.

제일 달콤한 그 말을 원한다면 나를 봐
부끄럽지만 그 말을 원해, 너도 알잖아

사랑해 (사랑해)

They moved towards the centre of the stage through the first verse and chorus in a haze of charged proximity. Every glance was a promise, every shared smile a secret. When the lyrics demanded it, Nayeon pulled Jeongyeon close, one hand splayed on the small of her waist, the other holding her hand. It was supposed to be a dance hold, but the way Nayeon’s thumb stroked slow, deliberate circles against the satin of Jeongyeon’s shirt was anything but choreographed.

我爱你(我爱你)Te quiero (te quiero)

너무 달콤해서 말이 말 같지가 않아

"내 귀에 캔디, 꿀처럼 달콤해, 네목소리로 부드럽게 날 녹여줘," Nayeon sang, her voice gaining a new, breathy quality as she leaned into Jeongyeon’s hold. She wasn’t just performing for the audience anymore; she was singing directly to the woman holding her. "내 귀에 캔디, 꿀처럼 달콤해, 네."

As they switch roles, Jeongyeon’s resolve, already frayed, began to snap. The heat from Nayeon’s body, the scent of her perfume, the absolute trust in her eyes, it was all too much. The world outside their shared spotlight ceased to exist. It was just them, the music, and this terrifying, exhilarating precipice they were about to jump from.

The bridge arrived, the music swelling. This was nearly the moment. The scripted, teasing almost-kiss that always sent Onces into a frenzy.

The music built to its climax.

La, la
La-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la
La, la
La-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la

La, la
La-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la

This was it. The final note hung in the air, suspended. The choreography called for the lights to cut to black as they pulled apart. But the lights remained on, bathing them in a warm, golden glow.

Nayeon leaned in, her eyes fluttering closed, Jeongyeon didn’t pull back with their usual playful smirk. Instead, she took off her shades (damn that's so hot), held her ground, her gaze burning with an intensity that could have powered the entire stadium’s light show.

A wave of understanding passed over Nayeon’s face. Her playful pout softened into a look of pure, unguarded anticipation. She gave an almost imperceptible nod.

Jeongyeon’s hands, which had been resting on Nayeon’s waist, slid up to cradle her face, her touch impossibly gentle. Nayeon’s hands came up to clutch at the lapels of Jeongyeon’s top, her knuckles white. The screaming of the audience became a distant, muffled roar, a backdrop to the thunder of their own heartbeats.

Time seemed to stretch, then snap.

Jeongyeon closed the final, minuscule gap between them.

The kiss was not a theatrical peck. It was not for the cameras or the fans. It was slow, deliberate, and devastatingly tender. It was a confession that had been a decade in the making. Jeongyeon’s lips were soft but sure against Nayeon’s, a silent question and its answer all at once. Nayeon melted into it, her body going pliant against Jeongyeon’s, a soft, shuddering sigh escaping her, a sound picked up by the sensitive headset mics and echoing through the stadium, raw and intimate.

For a single, eternal second, the world held its breath.

Then, it broke.

The scream that tore from the audience was not of excitement anymore; it was pure, unadulterated pandemonium. It was a physical force, a wall of sound that shook the very foundations of the venue. The lightsticks weren't just waving; they were whipping through the air in a frantic, blinding storm. The noise was deafening, primal, a collective witness to a paradigm shift.

And through it all, Jeongyeon and Nayeon remained lost in their own universe. The kiss deepened for another heartbeat, a natural, hungry press of lips that spoke of years of suppressed longing. When they finally, slowly, pulled apart, their foreheads rested together. Their eyes were still closed, their breaths coming in ragged, shared pants, their microphones catching every desperate gasp. A brilliant, crimson blush painted Nayeon’s cheeks and spread down her neck, and Jeongyeon’s own face was flushed, her usual cool composure utterly shattered, replaced by a look of dazed, wondrous awe.

The stadium lights, as if finally receiving a delayed command, plunged the stage into absolute blackness.

But the darkness did nothing to quell the insanity. If anything, it amplified it. The screams did not fade; they grew louder, more frantic, a tidal wave of shock and euphoria that showed no signs of receding. In the void, the only things that existed were the ghost of the kiss on their lips, the thunder of the crowd in their ears, and the certain, terrifying, beautiful knowledge that everything had just changed forever. They stood frozen in the dark, hands still clinging to each other, the echo of the music and the roaring of their hearts the only score to their new, undeniable reality.
