Work Text:
The castle atop the mountain was shrouded in fog and mist, built far away from the prying eyes of humanity. Eternal winter trapped these lands, none dared approach any further than the foot of the mountains. Rumours were abound— that the dreary winter lands were the dwelling of several spirits and magical creatures— each more dangerous than the other. Some even spoke in hushed whispers of a remnant of the long declined White Dragon clan hiding amidst the freezing colds of the mountain ranges. No one would be brave enough to ever test the authenticity of such claims, however.
“How curious,” Said Eternity as she effortlessly walked up the snowy winter path, “The last time I had arrived in the East, the cold wasn’t this brutal.”
“Times change, I suppose,” Melly mumbled, breath misting as she spoke the words. The chill was way beyond what a simple human could ever handle, and Melly, being a witch, was only barely managing with a shining blue flame in her scepter. She was still unable to resist the occasional shiver, which did not go unnoticed by her companion.
Eternity paused, “Melly,” She said as she took off her cloak, “Here.”
Melly, surprised, shook her head, “Th-there’s no need, my Lady,” She said, “My spells–”
“--are not enough.” Eternity said in a decided tone as she moved closer, “A being such as myself isn’t affected by meagre winter or mild summer, while you, my fragile witch, are evidently tormented under this eternal chill,” Melly opened her mouth to speak, but froze as Eternity draped the cloak around her and pulled it tight over her bare shoulders. It truly was warmer now,,, Melly couldn’t bring herself to protest.
Eternity smiled at her, “Do not worry, I am merely lending it to you. Once we are out of these lands, and away from the biting cold, you can return it to me.”
Melly breathed out, bowing her head, “Thank you….Lady Eternity.”
“No need for that,” Eternity said as she reached out and held Melly’s hand, sending the witch’s heart into a frenzy, which she tried her best to not let reflect on her face.
“This way, we will reach our destination sooner.” The Knight said in a soft voice as she turned around, pulling Melly along gently as she walked.
Melly, a little bit grateful and a little bit surprised, was not quite sure if this was okay– Eternity…..Eternity was an angel after all—and she, a mere witch. Would it be okay? To let someone so above her lead her so tenderly through a snowy path….vaguely, Melly also noted how cold Eternity’s hand was. But unlike the stinging frigidity of the eternal winter they were traversing through– the cold of Eternity's hand….was a tender one, a comforting one….much like the cool breeze one would experience on a scorching summer day……
“I am sure we will be there soon.” Eternity mumbled as she stopped at the end of the track. They had climbed up a considerable distance on the mountain by now— much higher than any traveler or wanderer must have ever attempted…..Melly also noted that there were several pairs of eyes that always glanced at them during their journey, but on noticing Eternity, quickly retreated back into the darkness and dared not show up again. Even the troublesome ice dryads and mischievous snow fae had quickly rushed into the crevices of jutting mountain rocks when they saw the Knight of Death approaching. Melly was quite grateful—the journey would have been much longer and tedious otherwise
Unexpectedly however, a sudden blizzard rose up further into their trek up the mountain, and it worried Melly, who wished to ask her companion to stop and perhaps continue on their way after the weather had settled down a bit.
“My Lady?” She attempted to call out, hand subconsciously tightening over Eternity’s…..she wasn’t scared,,, really, she was just a bit anxious, “Must we….must we not wait for the blizzard to die down?!” The storm was so aggressive and strong, Melly was yelling her words while trying to keep her veil on with one hand.
“Hm?” Eternity seemed surprised, “The storm wouldn’t quell. It is a blizzard that is here perpetually–” She stopped, looking back at the witch’s state—Melly was barely able to keep her cloak and veil held together while her hand was firmly holding Eternity’s palm….all the while keeping her staff balanced between her arm and torso.
“Oh.” Eternity seemed to only understand Melly’s predicament now, she moved closer, “I– forgive me…I failed to consider how bad it might be for humans and witches.” She breathed in, mere inches away from Melly as she lifted her hand and a golden glow manifested within it. Slowly, a shining spherical dome formed over their heads, shielding both the women from the harsh winter weather they had been trapped in. Melly’s cloak and veil settled down and she looked around, unable to hide her awe at the beautiful magic the Knight before her had just used.
“This will help.” Eternity said with a smile, turning around and walking again. The shield moved with them, it was as if they were separated away from the terrible blizzard itself— just watchers within their bubble of protection.
Accordingly, it likely also meant that there was no more need for Eternity to continue holding Melly’s hand to guide her—however, the Knight perhaps did not realise this…..still holding Melly’s hand firmly as she walked ahead. The witch did not mind.
After what felt like ages, Melly finally saw a different sight other than the blinding whites and greys— but rather than relief, the scene evoked a distasteful dread within her, her breath hitching as she tried to make sense of the humongous silhouette looming in front of them— there was a huge creature at the end of their path, golden eyes watching their ascent with a barely hidden threat as it bowed down and let out a growl filled with warning. The sound sent a shiver down Melly’s spine, and she would have stopped dead in her tracks— had it not been for the pull of Eternity’s hand dragging her forward without even an ounce of hesitation. Melly opened her mouth, wishing to warn her Lady— or even ask her if she saw what was in front of them, but Eternity spoke before her, even as they moved closer to the terrifying figure hiding in the shadows of the blizzard,
“Do not be afraid,” Eternity said, without turning around, perhaps sensing Melly’s fear, “He will not harm us. And if he attempts anything— I will protect you.”
The reassurance….actually worked…..although it did not completely quell the unease within Melly, she at least felt a little braver when they had finally closed the distance between themselves and the menacing creature—-Melly could finally make out what it was now.
A dragon. A White Dragon—ones that had been believed to have gone extinct centuries ago….so it was true after all–the rumour that these treacherous winterlands housed the last of this race’s kin. It must have taken him great strength and adaptability to survive these harsh conditions—-esepcially if he had lasted this long.
Which also meant that his danger was not an empty threat.
The dragon bellowed as it leaned down, pearly scales merging with the snowy storm engulfing them, eyes bright like molten lava, golden indents lining his scales and a bright turquoise gem shining underneath his neck. He breathed out, warm air misting in the cold as he peered down at Eternity.
Eternity, undaunted, stood her ground, right in front of Melly as she spoke, “Take us to your Master.”
Melly couldn't help but be impressed at the authority in Eternity’s tone– commanding an obviously wary and alert dragon to take them to their destination— she hadn’t even bothered asking it to move out of the way or back off– she simply asked the dragon to take them to its master straight away.
The dragon’s response, to Melly’s surprise, was not to roar or strike at them in hostility. Instead, it narrowed its golden gaze at Eternity, watching her carefully, as if questioning her intentions.
“My Lady….” Melly mumbled, reaching out to rest her hand on Eternity’s shoulder, “Perhaps we should step back for a bit–”
“There's no need for that,” Eternity said as she turned to glance at Melly, “Our destination is nearly here.”
“But—” Melly's words were interrupted as the dragon lifted its head up, opening his mouth to reveal a row of sharp, jagged teeth as his wings fluttered about, sending huge gusts of wind towards the two women.
Melly was even more worried now. Subconsciously, she had reached forward to grasp Eternity, her hold tight on the angel’s shoulders as she watched the dragon take a step forward, “Lady Eternity—” She tried again, but Eternity remained unmoved, watching with unblinking eyes as the creature’s march towards them sent the icy floor trembling and the air shook with the buzz of static electricity— was the beast preparing to attack? Eternity did not seem to worry much about the prospect, seeing as she was not at all inclined to even attempt stepping out of the way. Melly, on the other hand, was rushing to hold Eternity’s arm and pull her away, “My Lady—” She called out, looking toward the restless dragon and back at Eternity frantically, “We must retreat—”
Eternity looked at her, and blinked. She reached up and held Melly’s hand,, in a reassuring action, “Do you trust me?” She asked her softly.
The question made Melly’s heart skip a beat…..she found her face heating up despite the blizzard they were trapped in….but Eternity was looking at her with such a sincere gaze…..the answer, Melly found, was out of her mouth even before she realised it–
“Of course, Lady Eternity.”
Eternity smiled, an action emanating warmth and comfort in the midst of the cold. She turned back towards the dragon, who seemed to be unwilling to stall the confrontation anymore now, unfurling his wings and roaring as he lunged at the Knight of Death before him.
“That’s enough, my dear Watchman. These are guests.” An unseen voice spoke from somewhere beyond the fog.
The dragon froze just a mere inch away from a nonchalant Eternity’s face, and as a terrified Melly watched, the humongous creature slowly retreated, backing away as it huffed and closed its mouth, and then turned towards the source of the command.
The blizzard came to an immediate stop, and the snow stilled as the fog cleared, and the witch latching onto Eternity found herself stuttering in awe as a majestic castle rose into view before them, the structure having been well-hidden by biting cold and dense fog up until now. And the dragon—which had been guarding the very entrance of it seemed to reluctantly move away from the golden gates barring entry into the regal realm. The gates slowly creaked open on their own, and a shadowy figure was seen walking through the path– straight towards them. Melly stiffened, alert, but Eternity merely breathed out and stepped forward.
“You must forgive the insolence of my servant,” Said a merry voice in a musical lilt as a youthful and beautiful face looked down at Eternity with a bright smile, “I was away from my dwelling- and unaware of the arrival of such auspicious guests– and he, accordingly, failed to recognise the true nature of who stood before him. I will be sure to berate him well for the transgression later.”
Eternity returned the smile as well, “There is no need for that, Brother Tranquility. Your guard was merely carrying out his duties devotedly. I can infer that his loyalty to you runs quite deep.”
Tranquility raised his eyebrows, and then chuckled, “Ah, Sister, I see, you still retain that keenness of observation even after all these centuries. I suppose nothing ever could escape your sharp senses.” He then glanced at the woman beyond Eternity, the witch who seemed to be unsure and still reeling from the fright she had received before.
“How rude of me! Please, you and your companion must be tired– follow me, I shall lead you two to resting quarters. We shall resume our conversation within the magnificent walls of my castle.” He said as he stepped away to show them the way.
Oh,, well at least the horseman of War was polite enough to acknowledge her presence right away and even invite her in with Eternity. Still….Melly made sure to keep close to Eternity as she passed the threshold of those golden gates. As they walked further in, Tranquility paused, looking back at the dragon, his smile somehow turning brighter, and there was a twinkle in his eyes as he addressed the creature, “You as well, my dear. Do you not wish to meet my guests?”
The dragon widened its eyes, as if taken aback at the proposition, and then looked away, as if—he was anxious? Melly was a bit confused at the sight. And then…only to add even more to her confusion, the dragon huffed at the Knight of War, as if annoyed, and then turned back and took off to the skies without so much as an acknowledgement of the order his master had given, making a low annoyed grumble as he flew away from them.
Melly stared at the sight of the retreating dragon…..was this…..was this not quite the disobedient act from the side of the creature towards someone as important as an angel of the Lord? An angel who was his master no less???
Eternity seemed amused by the interaction, while Tranquility merely sighed, “Forgive me. He is a bit shy, I am sure he will return later.”
A dragon who was shy???? A watchman dragon who was shy???? What a strange world it was to be mixed up with heavenly beings who had shy guardian dragons protecting their castles…..
Once they were inside, Melly only barely heard the conversation that was going on between Eternity and Tranquility– it wasn’t anything too important, she figured. The two angels were merely discussing the glory of years passed by, while the witch who was following them along, slowly took in the grandeur of the exalted castle they were in. Paintings of historic scenes decorated the walls– as did various displays of artifacts from eras long lost to time….it seemed Tranquility was a collector…..and yet he maintained his dwelling in a much more tidier and pristine condition compared to their previous host,,
“And this–” Tranquility was pointing out a painting of a victor standing atop a slain white dragon, flourishing his sword in triumph as admirers gathered around him, “--is from the time when the centuries old war of the Red and White Dragon clans finally ended– of course that only applied to the external struggles. There were still many schemes and plots brewing within the kingdom even after the fall of Drakaina, the Dragon Queen.”
Eternity nodded, intrigued, “I must inquire, Brother. What was the cause of such a prolonged struggle? I am sure you must have been involved—how else would such an occurrence ever have begun and met its end otherwise?”
Tranquility seemed surprised by the statement, but his surprise soon morphed to a smile as he replied, “You give me too much credit, my dear Eternity. While it is true that my settlement here may have caused a few more conflicts than usual— I can assure you, Sister. That the war between the dragons was not my doing at all– nor was the struggle between the human clans that worshipped them. I was merely an entertained observer in all this.”
Eternity was evidently taken aback, “Whatever are you saying, my good brother Tranquility? What of the duties imparted to you?”
Tranquility chuckled, “Oh my, Sister Eternity— you really must have been asleep for much too long— haven’t you noticed? The gifts and punishments we were bestowed with to pass onto the creations of our God— have already been embedded deep into the civilisations that have evolved through the centuries. It is true that we still hold our powers and can very well march ahead to involve ourselves in the affairs of mortals and immortals— but why would we? When the responsibilities given to us have been fulfilled– and the goal of our guidance already met?”
Eternity was unconvinced, “E-even then!” She argued, “Were we not instructed to keep close eye on the civilisation—use our authority accordingly while we guided and gifted those who deserved it in time of need– while punishing the wilful sinners—”
“Eternity,” Tranquility interrupted her, watching her carefully. He did not seem upset, just a bit bewildered, “Have you not yet realised it? There are no duties to partake—not anymore— our lessons have already intertwined with the creations of our Lord to shape and structure their societies into what it is today. I may sound harsh but listen to me, Sister Eternity– pestilence strikes all those who are unfortunate enough to encounter a rabid parasite in the wild– spreading from person to person, rotting away the healthy outsides and eating away their insides without discrimination or patience— and all the while this is occurring, our dear brother Piety remains cooped up within his laboratory, having had no hand in this disaster at all. Accordingly, the people find a cure for their diseases– and save themselves. Once again, our dear brother Piety would have had no hand in this development.”
Eternity stiffened, looking away as she pursed her lips. Tranquility, however, continued, “I chose my dwelling here at the top of mountains— far from settlements and even further away from conflict. Do not get me wrong, I was not turning away from my duties, but merely watching the transformation of a society—I believed—could have been free from warfare. I was young and arrogant– and full of belief that society without me would crumble down into nothingness– for how could there be tranquility if there was no conflict?”
“How wrong I was,” Tranquility sighed as he walked forward, tracing his pale hand across the carving of a hydra’s head hanging atop a threshold, “---for one person can never be the mere instigator of conflict, just as one person can never be the mere pacifier of a battle between two groups– be it two distasteful neighbours hurling insults at one another, or several nations marching to each other’s borders in what they all knew to be a pointless bloodshed. I do not pity them, nor do I scorn those who run away from a fight as I used to— because, ultimately, the root of all conflict is the inherent desire for peace, but despite the millenia of conflicts I have personally witnessed— both ones instigated and ended by me, as well as ones I barely had a hand in— I have realised that the only ones who experience true tranquility are the cowards who run away from battles and people who hide away in a solitary dwelling with simply the nature and wildlife for company. It seems, the key to true peace is merely avoidance.” He finished with a wry chuckle, “Ah, I suppose that makes it seem like I am a coward too– perhaps I am. I wished to pose a question to the Lord, the point of it all– but ultimately stepped back at the last moment. And decided to look into the speciality of solitude on my own terms.”
Melly, who had been listening intently to the address all this while, breathed in, filled with a bit of sympathy for the Knight before her….truly, what was one to do when the duty imparted to them had already been fulfilled by the crowd they were meant to guide? It seems the Lord of War had quite the struggle coming to terms with his own irrelevance.
Eternity, after a long moment of contemplation, finally spoke, furrowing her brow, “I do not know…..” She mumbled, “I do not know what I must do anymore….” Her voice cracked and she turned around to face Tranquility, a look of pure anxiety on her face. An expression Melly had never seen before on her.
“If–if I am no longer needed—” Eternity reached forward grabbing Tranquility’s arms as she choked out, “---if this is what it was all to be— all this— then why….” There were golden tears hung at the corner of her eyes, “---why was I punished? For merely wishing to prevent pain and suffering for the fragile creations our Lord had entrusted us to? Tell me, my brother? Was it so grave a sin of mine– to want to save those whose fate would have held no conviction had it not been for the sins of their brethren? I was punished because I strayed from my duty— but now….now you tell me there is no more duty left for us to abide by. What must I do then?” She asked him— in a desperate tone, as if hoping he would give her a straight answer.
Tranquility’s face fell, and he reached out to steady Eternity as he answered, tone calm and careful, “You are not irrelevant, Eternity,” He told her, “Death is still the ultimate destination for all souls pure and impure, noble and not, old and young. It is merely so that death that does not need your guidance anymore—-my dear, soft-hearted sister, I had always known– the affection you held for the mortals. The ones who were closest within your grasp. Unlike the immortals who only so rarely ever understood your reverence. Still, you must understand. Even though they fear you as before, they also understand the inevitability of your gift’s arrival. Call upon the hounds of the underworld, and they will still answer you– as do my steeds of war. As do the cackling birds of Brother Piety, and the scavenging creatures Brother Satiety fed and raised by his own hands. Our duties have not been replaced, Sister. But they have merely been shifted from our hands to that of the flock we were meant to shepherd—as for your past mistakes,” Tranquility felt Eternity’s hands tighten, and he sighed as he stepped away and guided her towards the edge of the hallway,
“Do you know–that those distasteful events you always believed you wrought upon the world in the process of wishing to save the masses— they have served as a catalyst to push the civilisation beyond so much more than it could ever be had it not been for your blessing–” Tranquility showed to her paintings depicting the evolution of mankind from era to era— the creation of inventions— the discovery of art— the golden age of literature and science— the era of Kings and Queens and revolutions— Tranquility showed her all of it— the tragedies and the successes, the grief and the celebrations– woodland creatures and feeble humans— elusive fae and shrewd witches— all races that have been both blessed and cursed with all that was existence to them— but nonetheless persisting till the very end— some accepting the end as it arrived while others attempted to fight it, flee from it, or trick it. None successful, of course, for that was the nature of death after all— the only eternity in the world would be the certainty of an end.
“And I know,” Tranquility went on, “--that you still continue to think yourself to be unforgivable for those actions. You mustn’t, my dear. The Lord has forgiven you a long time ago and even if they hadn’t—” Tranquility paused, a decided look in his eyes, “The rest of us have, in fact we never held you in fault for it. You are our dear sister after all, we know that whatever you may have done– was merely out of concern for the fragile beings.”
Eternity’s breath shook, “You are being blasphemous with such admissions, Brother Tranquility…..” She mumbled.
“Am I?” Tranquility chuckled as he stepped away, “They do not mind. It seems even our lord has taken a step back from managing these creatures, letting them learn and live as they must without a divine gaze always watching them.”
Eternity blinked, a sorrowful look in her eyes as she stared at the floor, “----but if I truly embrace the life you and Brother Piety have accustomed yourselves to— then, what must I do at all? Merely find a place to settle down— and do what?”
Tranquility chuckled, “Oh, dear Eternity— what must you do? Surely you must have realised it already—” He turned to the witch nearby, “---do as you are now!! Travel. It is one of the most wonderful mediums to learn about the world— and discover the endless beauty bestowed by our Creator. You have even found yourself a companion— a travelling companion I mean,” His smile turned a bit shrewd, “Although, judging by the favour you shower upon her—”
“Travel.” Eternity interrupted him, a light flush on her cheeks, “----I have. Several weeks now. From my resting place to Brother Piety’s domain to here in the East where you are, Brother Tranquility.”
“And yet,” Tranquility went on, “-you have but discovered less than even a tenth of what the world has to offer,” He laughed, “There is no hurry. You are in distress. Take the time to think about it, Sister. If not travel, then there are plenty of other activities to do— you could even go ahead and disguise yourself to live among the humans if you so wish— much like what Brother Satiety had done.”
That seemed to snap Eternity out of her reverie, “Brother Satiety.” She noted, “I was bound to meet him next.”
“Oh?” Tranquilty looked at Melly, “A word of advice, kind witch, please do ensure my sister has a change of wardrobe before she enters the human village…..her current attire is much too flashy to let her blend in with the humans. Do not worry, I will be sure to cover all the expenses.”
“Ah,” Melly was a bit lost. A lot had happened just now, “Y-yes of course, Lord Tranquility.”
Tranquility nodded, satisfied, and then turned back towards Eternity, who spoke before he did,
“Brother Piety,” Eternity said, back into her calm countenance now, “--expressed his regards to you. As well as complaints that you have not written back to a single letter he had sent. He is still expecting answers to each one of them.”
“Er,,,,” Tranquility looked away, an obvious guilty look in his eyes, “Letters you say, hm?” He smiled, albeit a bit falsely as his eyes curved into crescents and he lied through his teeth, “I must have not received them at all– I suppose it is to be expected– with these winterlands and my dear dragon who guards the gate and scares away all the birds—”
“Jos–ahem, I mean, Lord Tranquility, there is a new letter for you…..from the same sender as before. Shall I store it with the other unopened ones?”
Eternity and Melly both turned to the new arrival who had spoken the words. A young man dressed in white and black stood behind Tranquility, whose lips were now twitching while his smiling expression remained.
Melly cast another proper glance at the young man who had just arrived. He had black hair and wore a pendant made of a turquoise gemstone, with jeweled rings covering his fingers— his eyes were a familiar shade of gold and when he turned his head, revealing the barely hidden white scales on the right of his temple—Melly finally understood.
“You are the dragon from before.” Melly blurted out even before she realised it. The young man looked at her, hesitant, but not as anxious as before– when he was in his dragon form, that is.
“I am….” He mumbled, averting his eyes.
Tranquility turned around, clearing his throat as he addressed the young man, “My dear watchman, I see you finally decided to show yourself in front of our guests.” He smiled at him, a hint of something lying underneath the expression he held while he looked at the shorter man, who hesitated under the gaze.
Melly, who watched the exchange perfectly, only realised it slowly–whatever it was that was happening between the Lord of War and his loyal dragon servant.
Eternity, despite all her relaxed countenance, must have caught onto it as well. She walked forward, smiling as she greeted the newcomer, “I believe we have met.”
The young man now looked truly anxious, unknowingly stepping closer to Tranquility as he bowed his head and answered, “Lady Eternity. I apologize for my transgression from before. I-I did not know—”
“Please do not apologise,” Eternity told him calmly, “You were merely carrying out your duties. And very commendably as well. Thank you for keeping my brother company. I reckon loneliness would have easily driven someone like him insane otherwise.”
“?!” Tranquility, who had been subjected to slander with no warning whatsoever, straightened up, “What? What are you saying—”
“There is no need to thank me,” The watchman replied, relaxing, “I am merely his servant, after all.” He said, ignoring his master.
Melly held back an amused smile as she watched the exchange.
Tranquility coughed, as if to take charge of the situation, “As I was saying—” He looked at Eternity, “You should at least attempt to blend in with the humans, my dear sister. I reckon you may have scared a few of them more than once with your appearance and ominous remarks.”
“That may not be false,” Melly chimed in, right before Eternity could voice her protest to Tranquility’s claims. The witch’s statement made her companion look at her in surprise,
“Melly?” Eternity said in disbelief.
“Forgive me, my Lady,” Melly said as she chuckled while covering her mouth, “But might I remind you when you told a child about the death of parents?”
Tranquility looked at Eternity, amused, “I'll be honest. Even I haven't been that cruel. Ever.”
Eternity seemed perplexed, “How is it cruel to teach a young one the finality of life?”
“Do you remember,” Melly spoke again, “When you asked that poor farmer the way to the Dragon Kingdom?”
Eternity seemed even more confused now, “Yes?”
Tranquility breathed out, shaking his head with a smile, “You must learn to be a bit more tactful in your words, Eternity. Humans are delicate creatures–in both mind and body.”
Eternity seemed to consider the advice, “I will keep that in mind.” She said finally. And then, as if remembering something, spoke,
“Do you…..have a name, Brother?” She asked Tranquility, who blinked at her,
“A name?”
“Brother Piety told me,” Eternity continued, “That each of you have given yourself a name, hence I was wondering— what is yours?”
“Oh!!” Tranquility chuckled, as if finally understanding what she meant, “Of course, truth be told though. It was the insistence of Brother Piety, or Orpheus, as he likes to call himself now…..not my idea at all.”
“Even though my Lord says that,” The watchman chimed in, unexpectedly, “He is still quite fond of the name he has given himself.”
Eternity and Melly both looked amused by admission, glancing at Tranquility who blinked and coughed while rushing to turn the conversation around,
“The name I chose—” Tranquility said with a smile, “---Joseph. Elegant and classy– much like yours truly, no?”
Melly raised her eyebrows while Eternity seemed to contemplate the name, “I suppose so.” She said, still thinking, and then she looked up, and nodded, “Regardless. I will be sure to remember.”
Tranquility hummed, “And what of you, Sister? Do you have a name yet?”
Eternity shook her head, “But I am considering giving myself one. Perhaps…..hm, I cannot think of any currently.”
Tranquility laughed, “Think carefully, do not rush. It is an important matter after all. And once you do choose a name– do write to me, I promise I will reply.”
Eternity looked at him, “I will do that. But first you must be sure to write back to Brother Piety as well.”
“Ah yes yes, I will, I swear…..” Tranquility waved his hand absent-mindedly as he spoke, and then he changed the topics, “Now. On the matter of rest–”
“There will be no need for it.” Eternity said decidedly, “I believe it is best if we set off for Brother Satiety’s abode right away. For I wish to see for myself– the life he has carved for himself amidst humans. And then….perhaps, ultimately I too can decide what I must do with my existence.”
Tranquility looked at her, eyes softening, “You need not be so hard on yourself, Sister. Stopping to rest awhile is no sin. Moreover,” He turned to Melly, “Look at how weary your companion is. Do you not want to ensure at least she is rested well before you two set off again?”
Eternity only seemed to think of that possibility now, looking at Melly, who hurried to say, “No no, it's okay, my Lady. You need not–”
“No. Brother Tranquility is right.” She said, “Forgive me, Melly….I often forget…..very well then. We shall rest tonight, and head off tomorrow.”
Melly was surprised, “I am not as fragile as a regular human, my Lady. Us witches— we are born more resilient and less prone to fatigue. I assure you, I will be quite fine should we set off right away—”
“I know,” Eternity said, stepping closer, reaching out to rest her icy fingertips against Melly's arm, watching her with a soft smile as she spoke, “But you have been accompanying on this journey for so long, and yet you never ask for anything in return, always trying your best, always by my side ready to assist and explain what I do not understand. I am much obliged to you for that, the least I can do is ensure you are well-rested and healthy.”
Melly blushed, she couldn't help it…..even through the translucent fabric of her veil, the intensity of Eternity’s gaze boring into her eyes was inescapable, to the point that when she spoke, she found herself stuttering, “Th-there’s no need for you to, m-my Lady…..” Melly mumbled, looking down and then back towards Eternity's gaze again, “I chose this after all…..to follow you….. accompany you on your journey….” She whispered, meaning every single word with all her heart.
Eternity’s face softened, “Oh Melly….” She whispered.
A loud sound of someone clearing their throat broke the delicate silence stretching between the two women lost in each other's eyes up until now— resulting in Melly, a bit flustered, coughing into her fist as she stepped away while, Eternity, clueless as ever, looked at Tranquility,
“Is something the matter?” She asked.
“Nothing at all,” Tranquility said, smiling, a lilt of tease in that smile, “Would you and your witch like to share a room?”
The question sent Melly's heart into a frenzy while Eternity did not seem to mind at all, and then, before the witch could voice out any concern, the angel spoke first–
“I wouldn't mind that.”
*****
Melly wondered whatever must have happened in her past life that she has been subject to whatever situation it was that she currently found herself in. She was lying atop the softest bed she had ever had the fortune of experiencing, within a room as grand as it was lavish. The lights had been blown off, but there was more than enough space for the moonlight filtering in through the large windows to nearly illuminate the entire room.
Next to her, lay the Knight of Death, Lady Eternity. Fast asleep. Golden hair unbound and framing her face like a halo made of sun rays. Her eyes were closed, and her breaths were slow and steady as the angel remained still in her peaceful slumber. In contrast, Melly, who had foregone her veil and had also untied her hair, was staring up at the ceiling with wide, unblinking eyes, unable to even spare a thought to the luxury called sleep while the personification of End itself was lying next to her quite so casually and dozing so naturally.
A cold draft blew in through the windows. Melly shivered, but dared not to move a single muscle lest she would accidentally wake her sleeping companion. She continued to stare up at the golden and white ceiling above her, absent-mindedly admiring the intricate architecture and the detailed carvings etched into it, when a sudden shift next to her made her freeze and give into the urge to look to her side.
Eternity was still fast asleep, but she had stirred in her sleep, moving her body so that now her face was turned towards Melly, who, now unable to look away, watched with curious eyes as the sight revealed to her details about Eternity’s face she had never noticed before.
The frozen teardrops on the angel’s eyelashes, the geometric patterns of the ice that coated her right eye, the glinting golden shine weaved into the luscious locks of her hair, the glittering dots on her cheeks– underneath her eyes, and her eyes— a glow as bright as molten copper— staring right at her—
Melly stilled, realising only now– that not only had she been caught staring at the Angel’s face, but she had also been doing so unabashedly as the angel was watching her. The witch’s face warmed with embarrassment but she could not bring herself to look away, or move at all.
“Does sleep evade you, my dear witch?” Eternity asked her, lips curving into the gentle smile she would sometimes show Melly, and Melly alone, and when her gaze softened, the witch to whom the question was dedicated found herself too tongue-tied to even formulate an answer.
“I….”
Eternity waited, but ultimately Melly could not say anything at all. She finally looked down, ashamed as she could only repent now in absence of an excuse, “Forgive me.” She mumbled.
“What for?” Eternity asked her, moving closer, making Melly’s heart thud louder and faster within her ribcage, and the witch could only stare, startled….she wanted to move back….she really did……but……but how could she…..when Eternity’s eyes, each time they beheld her— held a tenderness she swore she hadn’t seen the angel direct elsewhere….how could Melly forever ignore her own restless emotions—each time Eternity teased her with those fleeting icy touches— like right now, when the angel lifted her hand and brushed the back of it against Melly’s face, atop the white witch mark that covered the lower part of Melly’s left chin, watching it carefully, and then breathing out as she spoke, in a mellow voice barely louder than a whisper, her words leaving behind them a trail of cold mist as she murmured, “I barely know anything about you, Melly. Even though we have been together for so long…”
Melly blinked, eyes still wide, “What do you wish to know?” She asked her, in a low voice–afraid that one wrong move could break the trance they were trapped in.
Eternity watched her, “Do you have family?”
Now, Melly finally averted her eyes, “Not anymore.” She replied, although she did not try backing away from Eternity’s touch just yet.
“I see.” Eternity replied, “Aside from witchcraft and travelling….is there anything more that interests you?”
The question mildly surprised Melly, who thought about it, and then answered, “I….suppose the study of insects….has always fascinated me….I reckon you would laugh–for why would a witch blessed with such power ever spare a thought for such measly creatures?”
“Why would I laugh?” Eternity asked her, smiling, the hand she was resting against Melly’s face was feeling even colder by the minute to the witch, but the latter did not have the heart to say that to Eternity.
“I find it an admirable interest,” Eternity told her, “That someone blessed with so much could still stop and spare a thought for their fellow living beings– be it big or small. Moreover, I think it is endearing— that you find the study of insects so fascinating. It reminds me much of my younger days, when I used to be quite curious about human nature….and would often look into learning more about them.”
Melly’s breath stuttered, the cold on her face was turning a bit too much now, but still, she endured it and continued, “Lady Eternity…..are you comparing my study of insects—to your interest in humans?”
“Yes?” Eternity seemed amused, “Must I not?”
Melly thought about it, “Perhaps…..it really is the same….to someone like you espe-” Melly’s words were cut off as she hissed through her teeth, finally feeling the biting pain of the angel’s touch.
Eternity blinked, and pulled her hand away, “Forgive me…..I forgot—no, that is no excuse. Truly, forgive me Melly.”
“No….no, it’s okay, my Lady,” Melly told her, reaching up to touch the spot where Eternity had been resting her hand up until now. Her skin had been covered up in a thin layer of ice. Eternity must have noticed too. Distress filled her gaze, “Melly, are you—”
“I am quite well, my Lady,” Melly assured her, “Do not worry, a simple warming spell—”
“I-” Eternity’s brow furrowed, and a mournful look took over her face, “Am I always destined to hurt that which I wish to protect—” She mumbled, eyes downcast, and an anxious expression on her face.
Melly sat up, “Lady Eternity,” She addressed her, muttering a spell as she traced the left side of her face to let the ice subside, “Please don’t be so harsh on yourself…..I am okay.”
Eternity looked at her, still lying on the bed, eyes melancholic–as if she were holding back grief of something more than the current moment–
“Melly…..” She asked her, “Is……destruction….all that there is for Death?”
“Destruction?” Melly looked at her, and breathed out, “Of course not, my Lady. Death is not mere destruction, it is also a new beginning.”
“Yes, of course,” Eternity mumbled, “It’s a statement I’ve heard all too often….and yet…..sometimes I wonder…..about all those who lament Death, who curse me, and try to evade my grasp…..am I not merely helping them conclude their purpose in life? As eternal as life, I am Eternity, and so am I Death, for what is forever if not the promise of an End?”
Such powerful words, yet uttered in such a vulnerable state, Melly wondered if she was qualified to even answer the statement, and yet, in this vast, endless expanse, she was the only one who could.
“Your promise is what guarantees existence, my Lady,” She told her, watching her carefully, not looking away even once, “For if there were no Death–no Eternity, there would be no end to the endless suffering that plagues the world……it is true, isn’t it? That the ultimate purpose of your existence– is conclusion. Of everything that may be, and everything that will be— and while it is undeniable…..that end is not always desirable, but it is a necessity. For without you, Lady Eternity– all of life would be trapped in an endless torment of no certainty, no culmination would ever happen. Death is not a conviction, my Lady Eternity, as I believe you fear yourself to be, but rather Death is an embrace which promises eternal peace for a lifetime of an existence truly lived.”
Eternity’s eyes widened as she heard Melly’s words, and then—the angel smiled, as tears finally flowed down her face freely, “Ah Melly, I have shown you such a shameful side of mine. No divine being should ever put the burden of having their duty be clarified by a mortal— and yet, here I am. Forgive me….and thank you.”
The reality of the situation finally snapped back onto Melly, she looked away, blushing, “Your welcome…” She mumbled, mustering up all her courage to lay back down on the bed, trying not to look at Eternity as she adjusted her blankets.
Eternity, amused, continued to smile, she moved closer, whispering near Melly’s ear, “Good night, my sweet witch. May you be blessed with the most wonderful visions of happiness as you drift off to sleep.”
Ideally, Melly’s reaction would have been to freeze up in fear and lose all her sleep once again—but this time, the soft utterance of those words, coupled with the lull Eternity’s voice carried—as well as the cold ticklish feeling that grazed her skin—Melly did not realise it immediately—but as sleep finally engulfed her, and she found her eyes closing even before she meant to—the witch understood that the angel had realised her insomniac struggle and decided to use her magic to help the witch finally fall asleep.
Melly wasn’t sure—she was nearly asleep after all— but right before the last bit of her consciousness slipped away into the promised dreamland—she felt something soft and cold touch against her temple–a fleeting feeling—like a feather-light kiss…..
