Maria paused and breathed in shakily, staring right into the eyes of her young boy, who listened to her with rapt attention.
"Remember to save him, Tony. Promise me, you will?"
"I promise, mom," Tony said without hesitation, "I'll save him. Whoever he is, wherever he is, whenever he needs me, I'll save him. I promise."On December 16, 1991, the Winter Soldier killed Howard Stark but couldn't kill his wife when she reminded him of a promise. He ended up saving her and in turn, her son. In return for this, Maria Stark makes a choice, one depending on her Tony. A life for a life, the Stark mother sowed the seeds of saving a man who needed a second chance.
