Chapter 1: The Story So Far

Chapter Text

The Carter Family Foundation

The Carter Family Foundation is an American private foundation and philanthropic organization, with its headquarters based in Chicago. The foundation was created by coal tycoon and real estate magnate Hiram S. Carter (1890-1956) and his eldest son, John T. Carter I (1919-2001), in 1953.[1]

It ranks as one of the top 25 largest such foundations globally by endowment, with assets of over $9 billion.[2] The foundation's initial focus was on arts funding, particularly for museums and cultural institutions in the Greater Chicago area. Since the early 2000s, it has broadened its scope and supports regional and national medical research and healthcare provision. Its flagship project is the Joshua Carter Center.
