“NII-SAN-“

Tomoro flew up in bed, panting, heart hammering in their ears. Their eyes blurred, whether from tears or the fact they weren’t wearing their glasses hard to tell. One hand clutching at their shirt, the other tangled in the rough fabric of their-

Gekkomon laid on the other side of the room, the blanket and pillow that created their makeshift bed thrown aside. Their back arched, making them look almost like a startled cat, wide eyes flying around the room before finally realizing that there was no threat to be seen. They turned towards Tomoro, huffing.

“It’s rude to wake people up like that, ya know.“

Tomoro turned, eyes burning, but their angry response was cut short by the sound of their bedroom door being thrown open.

Reina stood on the other side, her breath slightly labored. Tomoro couldn’t make out her expression, but she seemed almost… worried? Next to her, Makoto shuffled into the doorframe, still rubbing traces of sleep from his eyes, Chiropmon clutched to his chest like a stuffed animal.

“Are you okay?” He asked, eyes flicking over the room to ensure nothing was out of place.

Tomoro bit their tongue, ignoring the faint stinging as the taste of iron filled their mouth. “I’m fine, it was nothing.” It didn’t sound very convincing, even to their own ears.

Reina and Makoto glanced at each other, and Tomoro could practically feel their concerned looks, even if they couldn’t see their expressions.

Furiously they swiped at their eyes, trying to get rid of the treacherous tears that still gathered in their eyes.

A weight shifted at the end of their bed, and Tomoro glanced up to find Makoto sitting at the edge of their bed. Reina was gone from the doorway, probably going back to bed after realizing they’d woken her up for no reason.

“I used to get nightmares a lot too, back when I first joined Glowing Dawn.” Makoto started slowly, his hand dipping beneath a still sleepy Chiropmon’s hood to scratch the top of their head, “Reina and Kyo were always nice about it. I think they’ve had their fair share of bad dreams too.”

Tomoro swallowed thickly, biting back the urge to start crying again. Why did these people keep insisting on being so nice to them? On being family?

Makoto turned to them, smiling, “you can talk to us about them, if you want. Even if we’re not a family, we’re still a team.”

A pink tongue shot across the room, a green blur following a moment later as Gekkomon landed on Tomoro’s lap. “I’m here too, ya know! You can talk to me!” They announced, earning a giggle from Makoto and an amused huff from their partner.

Tomoro pushed Gekkomon’s face away from their own, trying to ignore the warm feeling bubbling in their chest as they turned back to Makoto.

“I…” They paused, hesitating a moment before continuing, “I don’t know.”

Makoto nodded, making no attempt to push Tomoro to talk. The room fell into a soft silence, making the approaching sound of thumping and fabric swishing all the more noticeable.

Soon Reina reappeared in the doorway, tugging a mattress with pink-stained sheets into the room with her. Tomoro watched as she smacked the mattress down right beside their bed, making a show of loudly dusting off her hands afterwards.

“…What are you doing?”

Reina turned to them, smirking, as Wolvermon carried in another mattress. “We’re having an impromptu sleepover!” She announced, as if stating the obvious.

Kyo wandered through the hallways, still feeling tired and zombie-like even after sleeping in until ’10. It was a little odd, finding the kitchen empty at this time of day. Reina or Makoto would normally have gotten up to make breakfast by now. Had they slept in?

He pushed open the door to Reina’s room, finding her mattress missing and her blanket and plushies thrown haphazardly on the floor.

“Kyo,” Cougarmon spoke up, looking back at their partner from the cracked open door to Tomoro’s room. Kyo walked up beside him, opening the door fully.

Reina and Makoto’s mattresses lay across the floor, taking up almost the entire space of the small room. All three of the younger Glowing Dawn members and their Digimon lay in the center, limbs tangled as they happily slept in the morning sun’s warm glow.

He couldn’t help but smile at the sight, hand drifting to pet the fur on Cougarmon’s head. “Come on, we can let them sleep in a little longer.”
