“Eddie!” Nash yells repeatedly. “Eddie! Eddie!”
Eddie feels himself turning bright red.
“Wow,” he says after his name is repeated a good half a dozen more times in a row. “You weren’t kidding, huh?”
“He’s been like this all day,” Maddie says with a grin on her face. She shifts Nash in her arms, pointing over at Eddie as she says, “Look who it is, sweetie. It’s Eddie!”
Nash frowns, looking confused. “Eddie?”
Maddie nods. “Yeah, that’s Eddie!”
“Eddie!” Nash yells, reaching for Buck. “Eddie!”

Summary
“Good job, Mr. Buckley,” Firefighter Diaz says, once he’s standing right in front of Buck. He holds out the small toy, eyebrow quirking up. Is everything in slow motion? Buck thinks everything is in slow motion.
It feels like it takes forever for him to reach out and take it, but time seems to speed back up when their fingers brush, just slightly, during the exchange. He breathes in a little too sharply and nods at him, like, yes, an idiot, and his mouth is moving before he can stop it. “Uh, yes, yeah, thank you.”
...or, Buck’s an elementary school teacher. Eddie’s the hot firefighter that visits his school for a fire safety assembly. He is so normal about it. Seriously. Just ask his coworkers.

“Hush, you’re okay Robert,” Buck’s voice comes from the baby monitor. “You can’t cry because I feel like I’m going to cry any second too. My best friend thinks he lost me, and he’s right. I’ve been pulling away.”
So, he did hear.
He heard everything. Eddie would never wish for a sinkhole, but if one happened to open up beneath him right now, he wouldn’t complain. Or a freak gust of wind that could blow Eddie away from this mess.

Eddie decides to confide in the baby about his feelings for Buck. What could possibly go wrong?

“I love him, you know.” Eddie froze as Buck’s voice crackled over the speaker and a pit formed in his stomach, icy cold and unpleasant. Buck loved someone. Someone who wasn’t– “I think it’s always been Eddie, I’ve just been too stubborn to see it.” Eddie’s brain short circuited. He may have forgotten how to breathe for a second. Buck loved him.
